WES's First Trophy

about 3 years ago, My friend Eckels was talking with his brother on the phone. His brother, Billy Evans, was head girl's Basketball coach for Belhaven College. They did a ministry for kids who had a parent stationed or serving overseas, mostly in the Persian Gulf. They did sports night one night each week for these kids. One night, 5 yr old Wes had fallen down and was crying, so he went to comfort him. He asked Wes if it hurt bad and Wes responded he wasn't crying because he was hurt but because he missed his Dad. He then asked Wes what they'd be doing if his Dad were home right now. Wes told him they'd be deer hunting and went on to tell him that he (Wes) was a trophy hunter. Billy told Wes that he didn't hunt, but was there anything else? So Wes responded that he and his Dad put up Christmas lights on there house every year and they couldn't this year and that made him sad.
So, when his Mom, Lea, came to pick Wes up, Billy asked her if she would mind if he came and helped Wes put up Christmas lights on the house.
Lea asked "Sure, but why?" and Billy told her how Wes missed him and his Dad doing this. She laughed hysterically and said Bubba and Wes have never done that.
So, I'm hearing this conversation between Billy and Eckels and am laughing. I told him to ask Billy to see if Lea would like to bring Wes to my cabin in the swamp and I'd take him hunting while she and Lana visited.
Well, all afternoon Wes talked about the Bucks he had killed and many, many other tall tales about his Dad, who is a highway patrolman, but, as Wes said "Drives like an imbecile".
A group of Does walk out and we get the gun on the rest (my Daughter's Ruger Compact 7-08). He is too scared to shoot and tries to talk me into shooting it, but finally after 10 minutes, he pulls the trigger and the doe does a bang-flop, drt.
It was one of the most awesome moments in my life to be able to do this for a kid who I had just met about 4 hours earlier. We've all become friends since then. His Dad made it home from Iraq and all is well.
