Fountain pen appreciation

I like my Sonnets but goodness they dry out so fast. I love writing on my old stock Esleek 9lb 25% cotton onionskin.

My EDC pen is a Montblanc Meiserstück, and my backup pen is a Faber-Castell. I also have a variety of Parkers, Watermans, etc. I write for a living, so I figure I should have the best tools for the job.

This is a great idea for a thread. Here are 3 of my favorites: a Sheaffer snorkel and Parker 51 that both belonged to my great grandmother (She always let me use them when I visited her as a kid; I was fascinated with how they looked) and a Parker Vacumatic that was unceremoniously bought from eBay along with a notebook i hope to fill with memories in Africa some day.

Mine is a fairly basic model. I think they call it the Neo Slim now. It’s a quality pen, well balanced with or without the cap posted, and the brushed steel finish means it can get a little roughed up. The only drawback is the area around the nib is kind of short and I usually get some ink on me when I refill the piston converter (but I still prefer refilling to using cartridges).

I neglected to mention in my first post that I’m strictly a black ink and medium nib guy.

i just got a facsimile copy of Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and I was pretty surprised to see that it was written almost entirely with a fountain pen with an italic nib. I thought he used a pencil a lot more on that book.

I was using a basic Faber Castell as my everyday pen. It's steel nib was very smooth. My wife bought me a new Parker 51 with a good nib. It's now my everyday pen and I really like it. A gold nib does make a difference!

I was a commercial stationer when the Parker Duofold was relaunched in the late 80s. Beautiful pens with a nice weight and very nice to write with but I could not justify the price at the time

As someone that decided I needed to improve my handwriting mid-life and start sending written notes of gratitude, I found my way down the Fountain Pen rabbit hole.

My curent daily writers are the Travelers Brass Pen and a Wing Sung 699 (Pilot Custom 823 knock off). I like the feel of the 699 so I think I’ll order the Pilot.

I wrote to the Holland and Holland gun room and Charlie graciously sent me a lot of information on their new pen. At around £999 it is lower priced than the Purdey and I rather like it.

Ive got a small collection... a few vintage cross, a few vintage parker... a decent waterman... a handful of newer lamy that I use for daily use... and a very nice visconti that I picked up probably 10 years ago while in Florence.. that unfortunately has broken and I haven't been able to get repaired..

Ive owned a few very nice rollerball pens over the years (mont blanc, etc)... but nothing really compares to the feel of a fine fountain pen when put to paper..

You can almost certainly buy it for less than list at the Fountain Pen Hospital. Call or email. I have a number of the collectible Mont Blancs and others and have always found prices less than list.

There is nothing so personal as a hand written letter on home stationery sent through the post with stamps. My favourite ink is Mont Blanc Purdey single malt.

Very nice with exquisite details, and fits nicely on the table.

Much like Rinehart0050, as another southpaw, use of a fountain pen is a messy affair. That hasn't stopped me from making a few. I do like a good pen that fits the hand well and writes smoothly.

Some of you Texans might be surprised with what can be found in a Live Oak. These were made for my brother's FIL from a chunk of wood cut on his ranch in Fredericksburg.
