Fishing Addiction Group

You’re welcome Trophy Hunter01,

Glad you made it back to terra firma.
I’ve been to Kodiak and Afognak islands multiple times, for deer and elk hunting plus fly fishing the many streams for salmon, char and steelhead.
And, I truly love that part of Alaska.
However as you noticed, the weather can suddenly turn dangerous, on extremely short notice around that general area.

In other words, I don’t blame you whatsoever for being on “high alert” during your boat ride out there.
During World War II, Alaska was invaded.
From the battles that ensued, the USA lost approximately the same number of aircraft and crew members to crashes in horrible weather, as from enemy efforts.
Presumably the other side also experienced similar losses due to the crazy weather.

That fight was out in The Aleutian Islands but, the weather around Kodiak can be almost as evil and unpredictable.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

A friend of mine sent me this pic of a Tiger Trout he caught back in June. One of the prettiest fish I’ve seen. Must try to get up there myself!

That particular lake I believe is in the Glaslyn, Saskatchewan area. I haven’t gotten the name of it out of him yet! Sask Environment stocks several lakes with different species of trout. The Tiger Trout is a hybrid out of brown and brook trout.

We also catch some of these in Pennsylvania in the US.

Ragman,

Excellent information, thanks.
I’ve fly fished for trout in California, Nevada, Missouri, Montana, Idaho, South Africa and Alaska, yet until now I had never heard of this extremely beautiful hybrid.
Evidently, I need to get out more.

Tight lines,
Velo Dog.

Another hybrid trout that SE stocks in some lakes is called a splake which is a cross between a brook trout and lake trout. They also stock rainbow, brook, brown and a small number of cutthroat. Lake trout is our only native species.

I have heard of the “Splake” but didn’t know what it was.
Now I can see what those are.
Again, what a beautiful fish.
I used to own 70 acres on The Little Willow, (north of Anchorage about an hour or more drive and a half hour or so hike or 10 minute boat ride, up stream from the Parks Hwy.
I built a cabin there but a forest fire burnt it to the ground.
Anyway, the rainbows there were copper color.
Very pretty fish but nowhere near as beautiful at your tiger trout.

....Catfish, 'survivor' style, just for because....

I went up to the Big Manistee river yesterday for 4 hours of fishing. 32 degrees at daylight. The fall King Salmon run is winding down. The river is still full of Salmon but they are nearly done spawning and starting to die off. Still some very strong fighting fish left though. The Steelhead are entering the rivers now and coming up stream behind the salmon.

Went for Steelhead first since they are more difficult to catch. Second drift of the AM and had a huge one at the boat. I horsed it too much and lost it.

Landed 5 Steelhead lost as many. And had a lot more bites.

King salmon wore my arms out. And I kept saying one more fish before we wrapped it up. I caught my fill and let all the fish go and called it a day. A great day on the River.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.
