Hunting reports
Africa

Closing the loop on some prior posts. I joined AH in August when myself and a couple buddies decided we wanted to go to Africa for the first time. I originally asked about 7-10 day plains game hunts. Scope creep quickly took over and we decided on a Tanzania dangerous game and plains game hunt.

Thank you to all who posted replies and sent me private messages. I received some very helpful information. I did a ton of research on various outfitters in Tanzania, including several sponsors on this site. I feel all of the ones I spoke with would provide us a great hunt. I especially enjoyed speaking with Nathan at Bullet Safaris. Very enthusiastic and seems like a guy that would be great to hunt with. Extremely competitive pricing also. We also spent some time in person with Michel Mantheakis and one of his PHs. Michel has a great reputation and would also provide a great experience in my opinion. I received strong recommendations for both of those outfitters, and a couple other sponsors, from people on AH.

We learned that some friends hunted with Adam Clements Safari Trackers very recently with excellent results. Personally knowing someone with first hand and recent experience is the gold standard for us. After a number of calls with Adam and references we booked with Adam for October of 2023. There will be 4 of us hunting 1x1.

Life obligations don’t allow us to do a 21 day trip. Not knowing if we will ever be back, we decided to hunt 2 separate areas over 16 hunting days. We each will have leopard, 4x buffalo and all the western and northern plains game available. We will start in moyowosi in Western Tanzania for 10-11 days for leopard, buffalo, croc, sable etc. We understand that spending less than 14 days in the primary leopard area will impact the chance we all take a leopard but we made some trade offs to experience 2 areas. We should have an excellent chance at a few leopard anyways. After moyowosi we will move to Masailand for 5-6 days for the gerenuk, lesser kudu, gazelles etc. We have a little flexibility on the time spent in each area if necessary.

It is going to be a long wait until Oct ‘23 with lots of dreaming about the hunt. I am optimistic it will be worth the wait!

I have been to Africa twice on both plains game and dangerous game. The cost of Tanzania keeps a lot of people from booking but it is on my bucket list. What a trip for your first safari.

I booked my first hunt way in advance and it is always a good idea. You have lots of time to prepare (studying game anatomy, sharping shooting skills, practicing off of shooting sticks, dreaming, gathering equipment, planning excursions, etc.).

If you need any guidance about preparation just ask. AH members like Phillip Glass have some great ideas about preparing for a safari. Watch his videos! Keep dreaming!

I have watched a number of his videos. Good stuff. I enjoy the planning and preparation part of hunting and fishing trips. Plenty of those items to keep me busy!

One trip huh? LOL Never- not with your apparent resources and commitment, you'll go again.
Congrats on what will surely be the hunt of your lifetime.... up until your second, third, fourth trip LOL
We will anxiously be waiting for the hunt report.

+1 on Phillip

Congrats at starting near the top. I have enjoyed all my African safaris since 2012 but might have saved some money by starting in Tanzania instead of ending there. I’m not sure if I will stop or not after my second Tanzania safari. I was there in 2017 and am going back in 2023. I have been telling myself that 2023 will be my last African safari. The African addiction is very strong so it’s hard to predict. Maybe you will have more will power than I.

Will you be hunting with Adam directly as one of the PHs? Or is he your booking agent? He does both things. Good luck on your safari and please file a report on AH.

We are hunting his concessions with him and his PHs that work for him. He won’t personally be with us until a little later in the trip.

I just got the following email; looks like there's some conflict ....

I believe the Ngorongoro District is not currently an issue with any hunting safari operators. Are you a hunter or troll? New member with name “Canada” is a bit suspicious.

Good enough ?

Congrats! What a way to introduce yourself to Africa!

Wow, that is a hell of a first safari. I’m extremely jealous. What are your weapon plans for the hunt?

I ordered a Blaser R8 professional success (being delivered tomorrow actually) with .223 (for practice), .300 win mag and .375 H&H barrels. I am planning on taking the .300 barrel to use in Masailand and the .375 in the west. Need to fire some rounds to see what it likes, but tentative plan is 180 grain Barnes TTSX and 300 grain Barnes TSX.

.what's in the attachment...?....
A pledge for assistance by Massai elders to save their lands from being taken away for tourism and trophy hunting. Here are the first sentences of the letter:

We are Maasai elders from Northern Tanzania. Any day now, tens of thousands of our
community could be evicted from our ancestral lands to make way for tourism and trophy
hunting..........

Bringing a shotgun as well to do a little bird shooting

Wow, big safari with big time rifle. Nice!

We took a .22 because of the weight of shotgun shells and cost in county was ridiculous... like $10/shell. If doing it over, I might take one of my 28 gauge doubles. Could have taken less rifle ammo as we only took about 50 critters between 3 PH'S. @jcnelsn1 Some coordination on calibers between you and your buddies will help a lot when deciding how much ammo to take. If you can each serve as a reserve ammo supply to each other, you don't need to plan as much extra for the unknowns. It is Africa so expect the unexpected to happen;)

Good point on the coordination of calibers. We plan to all bring the same.
