Eland Cartridges for recoil sensitive shooter?

And you’re happy with that being your factory ammo option? That’s it!

There is more out there than just S&B and PPU..

you just have to look for it.. and might have to get creative (7x57 search, 7mm Mauser search, 275 Rigby search, etc)...

Gordy and Sons has Rigby branded ammo in stock right now that has the Hornady Interlock bullet loaded..

Hendershots will load up ammo for you upon request.. their turn around time is excellent..

You occasionally find people here on AH selling off 7x57 ammo they have...

we've got 2x retailers... @RAVEN ROCKS PRECISION and @Mark Biggerstaff at @R&M FIREARMS that have gone out of their way on multiple occasions to help members source hard to find ammo..

Until about a year ago I had a nice little SR mauser in 7x57 (now owned by another AH member).. I never had a problem keeping it fed..

Its not as easy to feed as a 308 or a 30-06.. but its easy enough.. even for someone that doesnt reload..

Does the OP hand load? If so some pretty potent low recoil can be made for most calibers.
I know a 220 out of my 30-06 at 2200 seems to kick less than 150 factory rem core lock load.
Hand loading really opens up the calibers that could be suitable.

I’ve mentioned and acknowledged Hendershots several times. But the people who keep quoting me refuse to see me mention Hendershots and keep bringing it up haha. Yes I know, that is the only option

Ah yes Gordy and sons in Houston Texas have 5 boxes of Rigby Branded .275 for 90 dollars a box. 140 gr soft point. Perfect for eland as OP is asking for?????

Ok so it’s that and Hendershots at 100 dollars a box got it.

Perfect rifle for his 12 year old son. Lol

I’ve spoke with OP and he already disregarded all 7x57 recommendations for many many reasons. (He’s logical) He asked for an easy and practical smoth shooting rifle for a kid to grow up with and take big game.

Everyone got way off track with nostalgia I guess? Just bad advice given to OP by the buckets worth

The rifle was built by Reto Buehler on a magnum length small ring DSB GMA action with a 23" PacNor barrel. It weighs 10lbs. 3 oz. ready to hunt, about 9 lbs. without the scope and QD rings fitted. It is an accurate rifle and I have confidence in it.

Wonderful rifle! From a fellow lefty.

Wow after reading 8 pages, nothing resolved really. Way I see there are a few items,

-Hunt could/will be 2 years away still
-You son will grow, both mentally and physically so planning specifics now is mostly moot.
-Maybe his #1 animal will change?
-Hunt type needs to be known, shooting from a blind at a waterhole at known distance and perfectly placed animal is easier for kill than an unknown walk and stalk opportunity.

Making a plan based on unknowns is usually a disaster.

I say keep your sons interest in guns and hunting foremost, keep him shooting that capable 6.5, confidence, right bullet, right spot is ALWAYS better than a few extra pounds of energy on target. As he grows and matures slowly let him choose to increase caliber. I loaned out my 308 to a friend so his daughter could get the feel of smaller increases in recoil. Flinch is something he does NOT need to learn. Keep him confident in his ability to place a bullet in kill zone will do more than any new gun.

My bet, when you book hunt and know many more unknowns he will be stronger, larger framed and supper confident. He may already be grown past the 6.5 caliber and dad can get him a new gun, transferring all the 6.5 taught him to an eland class caliber.

My 2c.

ivw,

i rarely disagree with you, simply because you have a lot more experience with all things hunting than i. that said, (and i am not a FAN of the 30-06) not greater, just different. slightly lower recoil, adequate for lots of stuff, better...nah. a 30-06 with 220's is really hard to beat for bigger stuff (like an eland). i do agree with you tho, a 175gr in a 7x57 would be plenty for an eland. that said, I'm gonna shoot a 375 h&h at mine this spring.
100% agree with that but for the op neither 375 or 30-06 with 220gr bullets is an option....

7x57 with 175 gr bullets

Ok the OP scoffed at the idea of a 7x57
fwiw then I would rent a canned 308 or something from the PH if possible
I understand the idea of not buying a new rifle someone will outgrow

Go try and find some….

I’m not making this up. Sadly the US manufactures have moved on from the 7x57

Sorry, don’t agree. Look at some of the other posts.

You don’t agree?

Try and buy some of the Nosler ammo you told me is out there. Haha I don’t know what else to say? You can’t buy it? Not lying to you lol

All “the other post” is S&B and fed blue box Which I mention as the only options!. Then two people mention henershots. Which I already mentioned! So I guess weren’t reading my full comment? Just headline reading? Not sure what’s going on

Is everyone delusional for the 7x57? It’s amazing and historic but sadly factory ammo isn’t supported. Im not saying anything else…. Why can’t people accept that?

Good grief, 30 second search turned up Winchester loads at Mack’s. I don’t buy loaded ammo in any caliber other than .458 Lott, but it’s not that tough.

actually hendershots was mentioned..

as was Gordy and Sons..

as has Macks Prairie Wings now (LOVE that store by the way.. I swing almost 30 minutes out of my way every time Im on I40 rolling through Arkansas just to visit it)..

Ammo seek shows 2 places where 175gr powershok is available..

as was making a call to 2 companies that are both AH sponsors that are known for finding ammo for the membership when asked.. @RAVEN ROCKS PRECISION has gone so far as to contact Norma within the last few months to advocate for runs of ammo in demand by AH membership..

what has been said is that its out there.. it might take a little creative googling (if you search 7mm Mauser on Macks for example you WONT find anything but PPU.. but if you search 7x57 you will find the winchester offering).. and it might take a little time.. but there is indeed 7x57/7mm Mauser/275 Rigby ammo available other than S&B and Fed Blue Box..

is it easier to feed other calibers? certainly..

is it impossible to feed a 7x57.. specifically for eland? absolutely not..

It was just a few months ago that several boxes of norma factory ammo using the 156gr Oryx bullet (by all accounts a very high quality bullet) was bought by at least 1 member here that I am aware of...

do a search of AH.. in less than a minute I found multiple threads where people were offering 7x57 ammo for trade or sale (Federal 175 grain.. nosler trophy grade loaded with accubonds.. etc)..

FWIW.. I was one of the guys that advocated going the 308 / 30-06 route for a variety of reasons..

but.. the unavailability of 7x57 ammo wasnt among them (again, its out there.. if you can be bothered to go look for it...)..

We still have new Norma 7x57 brass on sale for only $59.95 / 50 ct.

We have Norma Vulkan 7mm bullets on sale as well.

We can absolutely continue over many, many beers! :)

I'll even pony up some fine single malt as well :)

We are talking killing eland for OP’s son.
I thought AH was the premium bullet land?

Now we suggest Winchester power points and S&B for the largest antelope in the world.

We agree that’s not the best option for Eland correct?

And that all that’s on the internet “shelves” so…
