Denver International Sportsmans Expo

I'm at work just outside of Basalt.
Still coming down.

I went Yesterday (Friday). Made 2 trips at 2 hrs each up and down each isle. Some good looking deals on several African hunts that I would have been very interested in if I hadn't hunted those animals before (buffalo and sable combos). A lot of RV's including some monster pickup/camper combos.

I went today and agree that there were more African outfitters than I expected.
Most with what seem like very well priced packages.
Chatted with a couple and grabbed some brochures so got the little wheels in the head turning again…

Talked to THABA. Family run Mother Son when I talked to them.
Had a Package #4 Buffalo up to 40” good looking Bosses, they said self sustaining area.
Less than $9000.

We hunted deer and elk there 1980-1994. Camp was 13 miles up the road, good hunting on the ridges to the west. Also hiked down Broken Rib trail by the spring all the way down, across French creek (or Grizzly Creek, I forget which). We also hiked and hunted all the way to I-70 before the Bair Ranch rest area was there. Tough hunts, good memories, great friends. Most have since passed.
Good country. From Coffee Pot Road, you can go southwest and look into Grizzly Creek and spot bighorn rams. I've done that a few times when scouting/guiding sheep in S74.

I avoid the Denver cesspool at all costs, except for the Expo and National Western. Expo requires a stop at Sam's for my annual biscuits and gravy.
Wendy and I will be at the rodeo on the 18th.

I visited with several PH's and got some decent info. A couple hand you a brochure with a price list. Others talk about what you can hunt and where, and work to put a package together.

DSC in Atlanta all 4 days was a total bust!
They will try to blame the weather but Thursday and Sunday weather was beautiful.
This was a total disaster only made worse by the weather. Attendance at the boat show
was thought to be good by most that we talked to.
Several of the exhibitors divided their staff between Atlanta and Dallas and some even Denver
everyone we talked to said their staff (usually less trade show experienced) did better than those
who went to Atlanta!
We witnessed several DSC staff and at least 3 board members talking to exhibitors and
I personally was appalled at their arrogance.
The morning exhibitor breakfast was shameful
The board and CEO need to be replaced!

That’s a shame to hear. I feel for not only those who travelled to Atlanta for the show expecting something better planned, but also for the exhibitors who were there because much of their livelihood depends on the shows. Hopefully, they’ll conduct a honest after action review and make the changes needed to make the event a success in the future.

Hopefully everyone will transition to the Denver show or the Dallas Show that is scheduled during that period. Exhibitors and buyers alike. You know floor space has to be cheaper.
It would take a couple big fish PHs and rifle companies to make the move first. Then everyone would follow.

A client and friend who is a past President of DSC says he can’t believe that the current board approved the plan to go to Atlanta. He said they would have been much better off to downsize the show a bit and stay in Dallas until the convention center was renovated.

Trying to be a bridge between Eastern and Western schools of conservation.
From India, based in Hungary.
Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.
