I’m planning on having a shoulder mount done on my upcoming Cape buffalo hunt in Zimbabwe, but would love to have some custom leather accessories made from its back half hide.
Belt, wallet, shellholder, etc.
Does anyone have a suggestion of who might do this kind of work?

Who's going to lay for tanning the hide? Logistics.

Murray Custom Leather will craft a gun case or other products they offer using your Cape Buffalo hide.

I know nothing about leather and was ill advised along the way. I took alot back with me and it was made very thin. So ask alot of specific questions as to the thickness and it's use would be my advice.

I second on the tanning. Seems like the leather is tanned differently for taxidermy vs. goods.

My recent experience - I have a large square Buff Cow hide @ Splitting Image currently being dyed & tanned to leather for future projects.

I sent my acct. rep some suggested pictures & she was great @ explaining the pics were actually sourced from a Bull hide & explained the differences between Bull & Cow hides - big help! I enjoy options for using the full trophy when practical …

*Bull: is thicker & tans to leather w/ a grainy textured surface - Outlets that have round carriers, rifle cases, etc.
*Cow: is thinner & tans to leather w/ a soft smooth surface & tends to be more commonly used in retail items.

We have had our leather done at Collett’s Wildlife Artistry. They have swatches of samples to go through for color and finish. Their leatherwork is over the top. My wife has a warthog clutch that is absolutely beautiful. Warthog makes a very good purse leather.
