Closest kill

Red Stag in Bariloche, Argentina during the roar. They had no interest in me at all being so focused on the females. I saw two coming toward me and I crouched down behind a bush and they passed less than 10 feet from me seemingly unaware. Broadside shot with a .308. The next day the roar ended and they all just disappeared like turning off a light.

You’re lucky he didn’t wake up
LOL…on the contrary I had to wake him up from his daydreaming before shooting him.

While hunting for a brown bear in 2018 on Kodiak, I caught a glimpse of movement in my peripheral vision upriver. It was a nice looking boar. He was ~120 yards upstream when I first saw him coming around a river bend. Then we watched him jumping into an eddy in an attempt to catch a salmon. At that point he went out of sight and we only heard him splashing around in the river so my buddy and I moved forward to get a better look at him. As it was the first day of the hunt I wanted make sure he was the right bear to shoot.

A couple minutes have passed when he popped up on the river bank only about 50 yards away from us, shaking off water like a wet dog. Now he was on the same game trail as we were on and he started walking towards us, closing the distance in no time. We had our rifles trained on him at all times since he got on the river bank but there were a few trees between us, not giving us a clear shot. By the time he cleared those trees he was only ~10 yards away heading right towards us. At that point I said “hey bear” and he came to a screeching halt. He was oblivious to our presence until then and we could clearly see his facial expression change from a happy "country bear" who just had finished fishing to total surprise and confusion!! Luckily for us he decided to spin around rather than charge at us. I touched off my 458 Lott into his vitals. My buddy’s 300 WM roared as the bear was running away at around 20 yards. The bear started to spin around in place giving me a chance to finish him off with another shot. This all went down within a minute or two from the time he popped on to the river bank to the shooting!!

It was a short but exhilarating hunt to say the least.

Wild boar at 1,5m. Driven hunt in Tunisia. Sat behind a small bush and he came right for me.
Shot from the hip. Thought he would pass in front of me but jumped right in to the bush I sat behind.
My buff at 6 meters.
A moose bull run full speed 1,5-2 meters from me when I sat om a back packer with chair.
Only had calves left on license!

Well, the adventures described here of killing dangerous things at close range with knives, spears, bows, etc., are all very entertaining, but I'm waiting for Townsend @Bob Nelson 35Whelen to chime in with the story of his father hunting wild pigs with a TOMAHAWK by crawling into the lingam tunnels after them in OZ. Now THAT, is what a real hunter using a primitive weapon would do! And just maybe, we could convince one of the younger members (@Wyatt Smith, @Skinnersblade, etc.) here to recreate that adventure while wearing a Go Pro inside the tunnel, so we could all benefit from the subsequent video of the adventure. I would help chip in for a custom Tomahawk made by Garry @Von Gruff and the airfare to OZ? Townsend could guide him to the tunnel(s). That video would probably make a fortune on You Tube. LOL

@CoElkHunter
Dad only used the tomahawk when he ran out of bullets for his 455 Webley.
Being the man you are. A tough and rugged outdoors type I can see you hunting elephant with a tomahawk and step ladder. As the elephant walks past you jump off the ladder in your latest mapane camo from bass pro and smacking that big paki-derm down with your favourite Von Gruff hatchet. One blow.
Dam I just woke up and realised I was having a nice time mare in the day time.

@Cam Moon
Y'all need to bitch slap that person for telling lies. The tyrannosaurus died when I shoved the 243 some where where the sun don't shine.

Skunk at ~4' from the hip, Colt SAA 44-40. Damn dog had walked right past it, so I wasn't expecting anything until it moved in my headlamp's light as it pivoted on it's front feet towards the dog. Good thing I hit it, or the dog and I would have both had to sleep outside.

Javelina at 3' with a '92 Winchester 44-40 (yes, I really like this cartridge). He caught me in a sendero so I just crouched down as he bebopped down the two-track. Wind was right, but even with their poor vision, I think he finally saw me, stopped, and took the 205gr slug in the neck. He went about 30 yards.

Javelina at 12' with a Kodiak MkIV hammer DR in 45-70. I had climbed down from the box blind to stalk another javelina which I shot at about 40 yards and had just finished dragging him back to the base of the blind when I spotted another small band coming through the brush. So a couple steps over and they popped out of the brush at 12'. She didn't even twitch when that 405gr slug hit.

Got to watch my son take an incoming dove at about 20' with his 12ga. It was an impressive explosion of feathers. I believe the term is "smoked". We were unable to find anything but a foot to pick up, lol. I told him he should shoot them farther out as the goal was to have something for dinner, and feathers are a bit tough to eat.

Do you think we could find a .455 Webley in OZ to keep the “tunnel hunt” true to the original adventure? @Skinnersblade won’t need any bullets as he’ll have the tomahawk. Ha! Ha!

@CoElkHunter
Don't need 455 Webley ammo , half moon clips with 45acp rounds will do the job.

last month, in texas, i stalked in on a pig, 5 yards.

next closest, 13 yards on a wounded brown bear, had a shootout, walked away unscathed! yay!
@1dirthawker
I would have loved to see the shoot out with the bear. Just wondering what was he using to shoot back

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
