Cape Buffalo in SA or Tanzania? The better hunt

And those costs are just the hunts themselves. Average costs, if you know, for roundtrip flights with charter(s) and getting dip and pack trophies back to the US? Thanks!
Shhhh… don’t bring that up. That’s not part of the cost of the hunt because those costs come later! :A Victory:

7 day hunt on a regular license, with two buffalo - $19,800
Trophy fees 1st - $3,200, 2nd $3,700.
10 day hunt on a medium license, with three buffalo - $29,800
Trophy fee 3rd - $5,000.
10 day hunt, premium license - $41,800 + trophy fees
14 day hunt premium license - $52,800 + trophy fees
14 day hunt premium license, w/ Leopard - $60,500 + trophy fees
21 day hunt premium license , full bag - $72,900 + trophy fees
Wes, I’m not sure who’s pricing that is, but my 16-day Selous hunt with premium license and leopard was significantly less expensive than you’re listing above. Also, charter from Dar to Madaba is a bit over $4,000 and is usually split among a few hunters.

Masailand is some of the most expensive hunting in Tanzania with high trophy fees on the glamour species. The TF on just Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk and Fringe Eared Oryx will set you back over $25,000 with most outfits that have all three. That said, it’s pretty special. I expect to bite the bullet once and hunt there sometime in the next few years. Once.

Take her to Zanzibar for a several days. Stay at a nice beach front resort, visit the many sights. Then take her with you hunting just be sure she has a full big suit.
Bug suit!

Zimbabwe is better than both.
Selous is great, Tanz is great, but seriously over priced. Hunt with Buzz Charlton or Thierry Labat or several other great outfits and save money for the next hunt.

It "may" be possible to find a better deal just be sure it is with an outfitter and PH you like and have vetted. In 2021 for @Just Gina and I on a 21 day full bag, sharing the license, with lion and leopard, only 2 buffalo, sable, Roan, I think 17 animals total.... we were just short of $100k. Then tips, flights, shipping trophies, taxidermy. It adds up to a lot for one trip but what a trip!

We added 8 days before on Zanzibar at Kendwa Rocks. Tours to Stone Town, Prison Island, a park with Colombus monkeys, etc.

Prices to hunt Tanzania have jumped dramatically since then. Foreign buyers came in and bid up concession costs.

I would challenge people to look at cost per critter when comparing costs. And cost for experiences. Tanzania has not been all that much more when looked holistically. And I would go as far as to say it can be a better deal!

BTW, on our Tanzania hunt we did NOT take a charter flight. We flew commercial to Mbeya and drove from their. Interesting but miserable 6 plus hour drive but economical.

In Mozambique (Niassa) go to a waterhole and take up the track most likely. We only saw one Dagga boy while driving for 10 day hunt. Found a good track on day 4 -which was actually the day I decided I would hunt one. 5 hour track job -I took shot.
Tanzania (Selous) you will more than likely spot the Buffalo from truck and take up track. My two buffalo we walked into a pan (swamp area) from some distance (300 yds) from where we parked. Buff happened to be there and I shot them - one from a group of 5 and the other one from a pair. We saw numerous buff from the truck (10 day hunt) after I shot mine on days 1 and 3. Lucky I would say.
Zim hunt was also tracking. Shot 2 both by tracking. One from water hole (4 hour track job) and one when they ran across road. We set a leopard bait and then drove back and took up the track. Shot it maybe after an hour of tracking.
Which were my favorite hunts - the two where we picked up the tracks from the waterhole. Africa at its best!!!
Where would I go if I just wanted to shoot multiple buff? Selous.

Thanks great stuff!

I was wondering what a big suit was.... :E Big Grin:
Mike I saw that typo and was immediately terrified that some woman was going to take that wrong! Better to face a charging lion!

Trophy fees for the big three Masai land (Gerenuk, Lesser Kudu & Fringed-eared Orxy) is the killer, plus the upgrade to the premium license.

Alternate thought...I wouldn't pick TZ as it's so much more expensive. Some of the best buff genetics are in SA...there's plenty of evidence for that on my hunt there in June...many 44+ and the heaviest buff in Africa at up to 2400 lbs...I took 2 for under 20k. For another option, consider Uganda. You can get multiple buff for under 30k. Zim is always a good choice. Moz is a good choice but very different hunting with much longer shots in the swamps.

You may want to look into some of the hunting areas in Luangwa River Valley in Zambia. Fantastic buffalo hunting and other great adventures await there.
I will check it out. Do you have a special YouTube I need to check out? Thanks

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
