Canada's proposed new gun laws...

To someone living with under the protections of a constitutional republic, the dictatorial power conveyed under a parliamentary system is frightening.

Keeping Canadians safe is the Government of Canada’s top priority. We know that one Canadian killed by gun violence is one too many, which is why, two years ago, we banned over 1,500 types of military-style assault firearms. We also strengthened our gun control laws to expand background checks and keep firearms out of the wrong hands. These measures are helping to keep our children and communities safe.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the introduction of new legislation to further strengthen gun control in Canada and keep Canadians safe from gun violence. Bill C-21 puts forward some of the strongest gun control measures in over 40 years.

These new measures include:

  • Implementing a national freeze on handguns to prevent individuals from bringing newly acquired handguns into Canada and from buying, selling, and transferring handguns within the country.
  • Taking away the firearms licenses of those involved in acts of domestic violence or criminal harassment, such as stalking.
  • Fighting gun smuggling and trafficking by increasing criminal penalties, providing more tools for law enforcement to investigate firearms crimes, and strengthening border security measures.
  • Addressing intimate partner violence, gender-based violence, and self-harm involving firearms by creating a new “red flag” law that would enable courts to require that individuals considered a danger to themselves or others surrender their firearms to law enforcement, while protecting the safety of the individual applying to the red flag process, including by protecting their identity. In addition, the government will invest $6.6 million to help raise awareness of the new law and provide supports to vulnerable and marginalized groups to navigate the provisions.
In addition to this new legislation, the Government of Canada will require long-gun magazines to be permanently altered so they can never hold more than five rounds and will ban the sale and transfer of large capacity magazines under the Criminal Code.

These are the measures that chiefs of police, families of survivors, doctors, and advocates have been asking us to take, and they build on the many concrete actions we have already taken. The Government of Canada will work with provinces, territories, Indigenous communities, and municipalities to implement these measures, and will continue to do whatever it takes to keep guns out of our communities and make Canada a safer country for everyone.

Quick Facts

  • To ensure the national freeze on handguns can be implemented swiftly, the Minister of Public Safety has already tabled regulatory amendments in both the House of Commons and the Senate. These regulations will help stop the growth of personally owned handguns in Canada and are expected to come into force in Fall 2022.
  • In 2020, the Prime Minister announced the ban of over 1,500 models and variants of assault-style firearms. A buyback program will be introduced to offer fair compensation to affected owners and businesses.
  • Going forward, we will also ensure military-style assault weapons are automatically prohibited when they enter the market. We will continue working to ensure any new weapons that fit the definition of assault-style weapon are captured.
  • Earlier this year, the government announced an investment of $250 million through the Building Safer Communities Fund (BSCF) to help communities across the country prevent gun and gang violence by tackling its root causes, particularly for at-risk children.
  • Budget 2021 provided more than $312 million in new funding to increase firearms tracing capacity and implement stronger border control measures to fight gun smuggling and trafficking. Law enforcement agencies seized more than double the number of firearms at the border in 2021, compared to 2020, which is also the highest number of firearms seized in recent years.
  • The number of registered handguns in Canada increased by 71 per cent between 2010 and 2020, reaching approximately 1.1 million. Handguns were the most serious weapon present in the majority of firearm-related violent crimes (59 per cent) between 2009 and 2020.
  • In 2018, firearms were present in over 600 intimate partner violence incidents in Canada. Victims of intimate partner violence are approximately five times more likely to be killed when a firearm is present in the home.
My favourite, the firearms were "present" not used.

Limit on magazine capacity too in rifles w a max of 5 cartridges

Having to permanently modify my tubular magazine on my .22LR to five shells will certainly make all those gophers feel much safer. :A Shit:

With the recent spate of firearms crimes in my city by all the gang members shooting each other and acting like sociopaths, I feel certain they are all quaking in the boots with this effort by the muppets to save our communities.:P Gangster:

Anyone want to guess what the price for a smuggled handgun will be come the fall of 2022?

2025 CAN NOT COME FAST ENOUGH.

Yeah…

As you can probably guess the most recent mass shooting in the USA is constantly on the news here in Australia. Why ? I’m not sure…. Australia is not the USA. Anyway..it’s all over the media and as a result many people…most of whom have no idea about firearms nor the firearm laws in various jurisdictions all have an opinion. That option, for many of the clueless, in many instances is that the USA should ban “assault weapons” and or “high powered weapons”. I had a decision with one such person this morning. They thought that Australia had the best gun laws in the world and that they could see no reason for Americans to own assault weapons, and that all other weapons should be licensed and tightly regulated. I then asked them what the gun laws were in the USA and Australia? "Arh….no idea really” would best describe their response. So I then asked them “if all American gun owners were vetted and licensed should they then be able to own non-military style firearms ? The summarised response…” if they properly vetted and the guns are only sporting style then and securely stored then yes”. I then asked them if they had heard that the Canadian PM is now seeking to ban the sale/transfer of handguns and that that would effectively end private ownership of handguns within Canada. Handguns registered to licensed law abiding firearm owners. Their response….”arh…no one needs a pistol “… I then asked them if they could see why so many Americans are very cautious about so called “gun control?” ….give an inch and a mile is taken…..I was wasting my time.

Anyway…I have no idea how, within my lifetime, firearm control/prohibition has become an agenda of media and of the political classes. And, I have no idea as to what has happened within society for some people to commit such horrendous acts of violence on the most innocent within the community.

Is there a solution ? stuffed if I know.

I own 3 rimfire rifles with rotary magazines. Two Ruger Americans with 10 round mags (same as the 10-22) and a Savage B-Mag with an 8 round mag. How the Hell am I supposed to modify them to 5 rounds?

Tell the Canadian government you only have half a cylinder

Your Prime Minister will see no problem there...

Sadly this just reinforces the (my) conclusion that trying to understand or rationalise these gun control measures is a pointless, fruitless task. There is no solid logic - this is 100% pure political BS.

I ask myself what banning handguns does, assuming the US school shootings generated some momentum for this change....
- handguns may be involved in those shootings but the big massacres usually involve semi-auto long guns from what I can gather. ANY shooting of innocents is despicable and abhorrent but I fail to see what the handgun ban does to stop this?
- given that handguns are best suited of all firearms for personal carry, banning them means an unarmed citizenry by and large. How does an unarmed citizenry stand up to armed criminals in the absence of police? Canada seemed like a mighty large place to cover with policemen all the times I've been there. A legal handgun-carrying citizen could take down a would-be school shooter - but that option is now out of the window in Canada. Maybe handgun carry is not legal already in Canada in which case my point is moot.

And reducing the magazine capacity.... my brain cells want to self combust. All this does is extend the reloading time. How does this solve crime or prevent atrocities? Does Trudeau think that 5 casualties is ok but 6 is one too many? FFS the absurdities just roll on.

In South Africa we have already learned the maxim "You get the government you deserve" Sorry Canada.

Wow Canada freezing handgun imports, purchase, and transfers.
Watch out USA!

@Dr Ray
Even with our tight gun laws imposed by Jack Boit John Howard we can still own and possess handguns and have 10 shot capacity centre fire rifles.
This is a blow for ALL OF US.
WHATS NEXT????

Sadly this is how the BBC reported on this,
BBC News - Handguns: Canada proposes complete freeze on ownership

I suppose Canada's greatest politician of Al time(?????? Seriously????) is trying to leave a legacy to be remembered for all time! A politician who wishes to capitalise on the recent tragic events in the USA.

The BBC revels in these stories and actively promotes any and every method to reduce firearms ownership, in a sickening way they will wallow constantly in America firearms events!

As above there is a politician who will readily take advantage of any tragedy!!!

In Australia and I assume in every western country, the tv shows are filled with do gooder bleeding heart experts in firearms (joke).
Almost all murders in Oz are done by what the Bureau of Statistics calls sharp instruments.
Well before the tough new gun laws for law biding citizens, sharp instruments comprised more than 85% of all murders.
Now I expect it to be higher.
I was a media spokesman for the Association of Professional Shooters and had political connections.
Response was that the new gun laws were a PR exercise.
Police told me that they knew it was a waste of time but they were getting paid overtime.
I know of a ship captain who told me personally - not hear say/ that he imported 1.1 million SKS semi auto rifles from Hong Kong.
Note that a grand total of all surrendered (buy back scheme), totalled around 640.000.
Hmmm do some mathematics here!!

I’m so ashamed to be Canadian.

Don’t be ashamed! You are in a great country!

Unfortunately it’s your CURRENT government that controls the place atm.
In fact the head of your country is an English woman in a foreign country.
Your prime minister obviously wants to score points!
All the best.

As it is there are no armed Canadians. Handgun have been registered here since the second world war, and not legal to carry open or concealed or hunt with. Just pandering to the huddled, frightened mask wearing liberals, for votes.
Even if they ban all firearms, it won’t stop the sick minded from doing evil. Anyone with grade 9 shop class could build you a gun, and grade 9 science could make gun powder. I guess they think the Jennie will fit back in the bottle.

This should be very worrisome to you as this says they can take your firearms without you even being able to know who your accuser is, meaning it could be someone you know, but who knows... could be anyone or just the Gov't deciding they've had enough of you owning firearms. Also, no note of an appeals process or when/if you'll get them back.

Of course, no identity, for their safety... but wait, if you took the persons firearms isn't everybody magically safe now? And surely they are safe anyways, because the Gov't has their backs right...? They better, because the Gov't is quickly becoming the only ones that could save you.

I like how they have to narrow down wording to make sure they say "to combat GUN crime," as though no other form of crime matters, and make sure to not recognize the lives guns save each year.

Make sure and carry a rape whistle so you can whistle them to death.

Red flag laws are a massive poison of guilty until proven innocent, you need only think of the trial being thrown in your face right now to see the poison in this, Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard.

And the bar is set so low your guns will be taken, you need only be someone "considered a danger or threat to themselves or others."

Well, gee, that's a low bar, does anyone want to be someone who could never be considered a danger or threat to another...
Someone trying to murder your family, you don't want to be a danger to that person??

You don't even want them to consider that you might be a danger to them?

Nah, the Gov't has it, of course, you don't need to worry about defending yourself and others at all, outside of gun violence there's zero crime, certainly, it'll be a magical utopia.

To someone living with under the protections of a constitutional republic, the dictatorial power conveyed under a parliamentary system is frightening.

You are absolutely right. As a citizen of both countries, and having lived in both, I can assure you that the USA system of government is vastly superior to that of Canada. Trudeau is doing a very good job of demonstrating the rights of citizens that exist in a parliamentary system.

I'm sure criminals will all be ready to turn in their firearms and promise, cross their heart and hope to die, that they'll never seek to purchase or manufacture a firearm.

As for Trudeau, I'm sure that little dictatorial bastard is surrounded at all times by people with .....gasp...handguns and rifles with more than 5 round capacities. Funny, I thought he said guns were only for hunting and sport.

When I said to my husband about these new laws, he, ever the cynic said "I wonder what phone calls have taken place between President Jo and President Justin, we need a world leader to take action and show what must be done?"
So consequently law abiding Canadian citizens carry the can and the blame with these new proposals. Might be a bit of a stretch I suppose hardened criminals will follow these new laws???

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.
