CANADA: British Columbia Moose Hunt???? Tenaka River Outfitters

I had two friends screw by outfitters in Ak. and BC....one lost 7000 and the other 8000 a few yrs ago...Had 3 bad trips to Ak. out of 6...Plenty of lies and areas with no game....We only go to Africa now, less chance of that..

Game density is low in much of Alaska despite what the TV shows say. On top of that the country is tough. To hunt unguided you must do your homework on the area and the flight operator. You will work for what you get, oh, and you’d better know how to pack that critter out. No antlers or horns can come out until ALL the meat is out.

Update, well surprise we didn't receive our hunt refund or our out of pocket cost for our meals from our outfitter, which he promised to pay right away. I have sent him a text this morning, requesting and update to refund, we will see if he sends a text back. My hunting partner is emailing him with the same requests, if there are no return text or email we will then put our next plan into action, which is involving SCI, BC Fish and Game, and BC Outfitters and Guide association. Will keep you posted.

We received an email back from our outfitter yesterday, stating the check will be in the mail this coming Monday, and that he was not happy we had contacted SCI about our hunt or lack of hunt we had with him? So we will see if a check shows up in the next couple of weeks, and if it does, guess what, I'm heading to Africa to burn it up. I hope that a couple of deals will still be available to spend the money on. One last question, how do you pay deposits for safaris, if the safari operator doesn't accept PayPal or credit cards? My credit union refuses to do any foreign transactions period? The 3 times I have been to Africa I have used PayPal for deposits and final payment. Maybe this should have been asked as a separate question on the forum?

Won't do foreign transactions? Weird. I have always just wired funds.

Hey Rick, are you wiring from your bank, or using a money transfer company? If you are using a wire transfer company may I have the name please? My credit union won't even do wire transfers to Canada, only the US, I really don't want to change banking institutions, I have been a member for over 40 years there.

I wire straight from the bank. There is a fee, about $25 US. I use Scotia Bank, one of the larger banks in Canada. You will need the banking info of the outfitter of course, but they will provide that.

Well I returned home from my annual vacation to find a check from our outfitter in the mail, spoke with my other 2 buddies and they also received checks, my checked cleared today. I'm happy we were repaid our monies owed to us, this does take the sting out of the failed hunt. I know the outfitter is not happy with me for posting the issues we had with them, even though I never mentioned the outfitter by name, but my ass was raw from what I thought was a royal screwing by them. So I would like to publicly thank Todd for repaying us, and hope that they can get a good handle on things and have a successful BC Outfitting business. I would also like to thank Mike, who I thought was our SCI VP, but is actually a board member in charge of hunt donations, who helped us out.

Awesome!!!!

Way to stay on them!

And how much do you wanna bet that without the threat of publicity that you don't get your money back?

Update; all three checks bounced, my bank just released the funds to me since I had the money in my account to cover the check, but after a couple of weeks we received a letter from the bank stating insufficient funds. So now to add insult to injury my bank charged me $10.00 for a foreign check cashing charge, so the prick got me for another 10 bucks. Of course they were just shocked the checks bounced and were sending money orders right away, still waiting of course.

The guy is certainly following a pattern.

Well I did receive a cashiers check from the outfitter several weeks back, and I'm confidant at this point the money has been repaid to me. As it took longer than promised I'm glad they followed through with my repayment.

Wow. What an ordeal!

(y) These things can really wear on a guy’s patience!

Glad it sorted, but its a shame you had to go thru all that to get some accountability.
Regards
Pat

Glad you received what was owed tay50. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth as a BC resident. As most know our moose/game populations are NOT what they used to be. I would ask any BC outfitter for current (last couple years) success on moose. Wolves are every where, seen 17 last year and shot 2.

A tip on money transfers, in Canada NEVER use a bank. I just sent a deposit to Africa for a safaris in 2020, used a Canadian money exchange company, (I shopped around) outfitter had deposit in bank next day. Transfer fee was $25 cnd, my bank of 40 years best offer was $40 and exchange from bank was $400 Cnd more. Not sure how US banks work but Canadian banks are robbers of our own money.

MarkB thanks for the post, I'm not the type of person who would judge everyone because of one guy, even though I might said I would never hunt Canada again. I actually bow hunted black bear in Manitoba this past May and had a great time. I saw 45 bears in total, all color phases of bear, the best one I seen was a large cinnamon sow with 2 blonde cubs, and 1 black cub, beautiful. I did see some smaller boars, under 200 pounds, and a couple over but no shot presented. Long story short, since my our tags are still good we are going back in October, the outfitter gave a great return price. There were 6 guys in camp the other 3 guys shot a 450 pound cinnamon, 280 pound black and 205 pound black. The 3 of us all seen bears nightly, one guy wounded a bear in the leg, outfitter still let him hunt, said it happens, my other buddy, missed judged a shooter, then 10 minutes a monster came in and just as it entered the shooting lane it ran off.
We did see a lot of wolf tracks in BC when we were walking up and down the trail to the river, if there was a moose track there was a wolf track on top of it. To bad it wasn't the other way around killed 17 wolves, missed 2, the moose would have been a little better off. Kurt

I gladly shoot every wolf we are able too, they are the smartest, trickiest most difficult animal to get close to and hunt. Known fact their populations are at an all time high with a negative impact on game. Glad you have not written of Canada because of one bad apple, there are many good outfitters, seams you have one in Manitoba for black bear. We have tons of black bears hunting them is fun but no baiting in BC so walk, stalk. With moose hunt funds returned you now have the fun part of planning another hunt. Good luck.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
