CANADA: British Columbia Moose Hunt???? Tenaka River Outfitters

We were told that the outfitters are checked out, before they are allowed donate, not sure what that entails though. We are trying to get in touch with our local SCI president now, and one of the directors we met at a SCI dinner who a great guy, and we think he will be of some help to us. We just don't want this to happen to any other people who attend these dinner/fundraisers, so this guy needs to be put out of business and go to jail for obtaining money under false pretenses. As most of you know the advantage is with the outfitter, most require full payment 30 to 60 days prior to arrival, all we get is his word and a promise on a piece of paper that means nothing in the long run. We have all that, but how do you fight it when it's almost 2800 miles away? So since I'm too pretty to go to prison, I just came home, and will fight my battle here hoping SCI refuses to let him sell his hunts at their fundraisers.
On a good note, I'm heading to my taxidermist today to pick up 2 back skins, full bushbuck skin, and zebra skin, along with dropping off my oryx and red hartebeest horns for shoulder mounts, all were taken with KMG safaris in May of 17.

I don't hold that against SCI at all, caveat emptor....

But, if a local chapter swears their is a vetting process that is specifically in place to protect the client.... Well....

Update to our story, I missed a phone call yesterday from my taxidermist who knows our moose hunting story, luckily my hunting partner didn't miss his call. Seems the local SCI VP walked into the taxidermist studio and asks about some information concerning reports from hunters who hunted with his recommended outfitter. Well a call was made to me and my partner, he answered and our story was told, which was similar to stories other hunters have told him about the outfitter. His response was, hard to believe this happen, "I have hunted with him for years and have several more hunts in the future plan with him, my hunts are always fun and good hunts". So he is going to be hunting with our outfitter this November, and plans on asking him what happened and what his plans are to make this right for us, or he might not be allowed to attend, advertise, or sell hunts at the fundraiser. My partner was told that maybe he could get a credit towards another SCI auction hunt at the fundraiser, he asked about what could be done for me since I had paid cash for my hunt, the VP wasn't sure at this point. We also found out he charged us US funds for our Canadian licenses, so we paid $250 US for a $250 canadian license, more money in his pocket, and the elk licenses was not given to us until the day we tried to go back to camp on the 5th day. When speaking with the F&G department it was confirmed our elk tags were purchased Oct 4th, just before our last attempt to go back to camp, we had our elk tag in our pocket for about 1 hour before our hunt was over. What little we were able to hunt would have been very problematic if we had shot an elk without a tag, which we were told was ok because our tags were just left at the office. We would have never shot an elk without our tags anyway, we just don't hunt that way. To be continued.........

I lived in Fort Nelson for 15 years, there were a lot of moose up there. Most of the outfitters at the time where really good. I believe most of them have now sold out, not sure on most of the new owners.

Sorry to hear about this debacle. This is the kind of stuff that needs to be shared, just as you’ve done. Maybe it will keep someone else from getting the shaft.
The good outfitters suffer because of morons like this.
I hope you get some kind of consideration for your troubles. If not, please come back and post the name of this outfitter.

Thank you everyone, the tell tale sign that will tell if he will follow through is, he told us he would pay for our meals that we bought while waiting to go back into camp right away. We are submitting our total to him shortly, plus we are going to ask for our prepaid $250 dollar float plane flight, we didn't take, due to him deciding it would be better to argo in. When in reality he owes the float plane operator so much money he refused to fly clients in until he was paid.

Sorry to here about all your troubles , it seems really shady to me how your hunt was run. As a British Colombian you have my apologies, I feel bad when folks that travel to the province get the run around by some money grubbing dirt bag outfitters. Most are OK, but when they are rotten , they are really rotten.
PM if there is any thing I can do for you to help sort this out, I some experience in investigations, etc.

Hey Pat thanks for offering to help, we have spoke with the licensing authorities and still working with SCI people to get this matter taken care of. I feel sorry for the last group of hunters who came in after us. The average price paid for this hunt was $10.500.00 we were lucky since our auction price was $6500, plus tax and licenses $8250.00, we actually got just a little less of a screwing than the others. We are ready for him once this is over, I hope he is never able to use SCI fundraisers as his personal stalking grounds for unsuspecting hunters.

The latest on our refund of our meals we were promised, submitted the number to him, $224.00 and no response, not surprised. So another email was sent, did you receive our email requesting monies for our meals, reply, we are busy hunting in Alberta, will contact you after the season. Funny how a guy who had his outfitters license revoked for five years along with his hunting rights being suspended is still able to guide clients? Also the SCI VP who suggested we book the hunt with him, well he seems to have a issue calling us back with all the answers he was supposed to find out for us when he was hunting with the outfitter. If I knew where he lived I would just drive the 20 miles and have a talk with him. Next deadline is 12/30 18, his words not ours, as I posted earlier he said he would pay us back in full by the end of this year.

Tay.......thanks for posting. SCI at the National level, makes it clear that they do not guarantee any hunt that they sell at auction. I have had trouble with two hunts that I have purchased. They did give me limited assistance by helping me contact the sellers, who would not to me. But they did nothing more. I strongly encourage anyone buying a hunt at any SCI banquet to be cautious. I'm not saying don't do it, but beware. Often, the outfitters donate the entire hunt to SCI for the publicity, and gets no $. They do this willingly, but often treat auction hunt winners differently from paying clients........hope you get some of your money back. But the time and the hunt will still be lost......FWB

Thanks FWB, as with most everything in life time heals you, although I'm still not happy about what happened, I'm over it and moving forward on tho my next hunting adventure. Only problem I have is where to go hunt next?

Well said Tay....I have had marginal hunts in North America, Europe, and Asia. But never a bad hunt in Africa, Australia or South America. Just chance, perhaps? Maybe, maybe not....best of luck in your next adventure..............................FW Bill

Put your camping gear and ATV in the pickup and drive up here. You don’t need a guide for moose hunting. Suggest come to Fairbanks for 1 thru 15 Sep that will give you plenty of time
to scout. A lot of hunters even bring a small freezer for moose meat in their pick up for the travel back home with the meat. We have Big Bulls even in City limits of Fairbanks also good trout fishing. Most of my moose hunting is 20 miles outside Fairbanks. We have scammers every year trying to be guides that hang out at Sportsman’s Warehouse. Some don’t even live in Alaska. Do it yourself moose hunt will save you a lot of money.

I’ve driven it a bunch. 4,400 miles from my place in Bama to our home in Kenai. It takes me 7 days alone, 5 days with two drivers. Edmonton is exactly half way.
