Anyone ever take ammo with them as a gift for PH? Didn’t know if it was “questionable” due to not actually bringing a rifle.

I’m a bow hunter and wanted to bring some.

Sorry if this has been asked before. I searched but didn’t see anything.

Thanks!

Nope you can’t from what I have been told. Only way loaded ammo can go in is if you are taking a rifle in that caliber. Reloading components, brass and bullets only yes you can. I asked Henry at Riflepermits these questions last trip in 2019.

A temporary import permit will only be issued at the port of entry to the following persons

To a foreign visitor for the purpose of hunting.
....................
For only one (1) firearm per caliber.

Not more than two hundred (200) rounds of ammunition capable to be fired by the firearm imported.

Believe I’m reading it correctly. Would have to be importing rifle with ammo...

Might just have to do that. Never taken a rifle there. Will have to research that process

Airlines charging fees for firearms might make your “gift” rather pricy.

That sucks! I was thinking of bringing some premium ammo for use in the rental rifle(s) provided, since it seems to require another expense and an ACT of some bureaucratic God with both the airlines and country of destination to travel with firearms, ammo and Covid testing, etc.?

Lol...you’re just killing my ideas

Your knowledge is second to none. I appreciate the hell out of it.

What is cost with airline? Delta specifically...

Sometimes the foreign customs folks will also count your ammo to see how many you brought compared to how many you are taking home. I don't think it is technically legal to import ammo with a rifle and leave the unused ammo behind but some people do it. I think it could be suspicious if you go home with nothing. A lot of PHs will ask you to leave ammo behind but of course they are at no risk.

They count your ammo on the way home? Really! Why? They counted it and determined the "head stamp" of it when you got there? They're going to now count your "absence" of ammo after the hunt? Are they going to count the number of Covid tests you had both before and during your stay? How much more stupid can this get? This entire melodrama has me rethinking an African hunt.... seriously!

Check with them on their websites. You never know what the current grab fees are.

I have had them count my ammo when leaving to see if I was leaving a lot behind I guess. Same in Mexico. They have also checked to make sure I didn’t bring more than what the gun permit lists for ammo. It must be because you are not supposed to import ammo except for your personal use??

Try entering USA on a non-US passport...

Be careful bringing in brass and bullets with your bow, you are probably correct that they dont require a permit, but the junior official at the airport doesnt know that. Why invite trouble? Bring another gift, a nice knife or torch or some such.

My thoughts too. One of the biggest problems I’ve had in Africa was actually at the local airport in Windhoek. I made it through the international airport the day before no issues, but trying to fly to caprivi the officer gave me a huge issue over multiple knives. I brought them as gifts for staff and he wanted to see my declaration and permits for pocket knives! Finally I got mad and told him I opened the gun case for officer the day before same as I did in front of him and nothing was said, he finally let it go. I think you’re asking for a potential issue bringing brass even though 99% chance of making it through without being noticed.

There is no specific fee with delta as long as it’s not oversized, but you are limiting your routes. You will also have to pay for gun permit in South Africa, pre-approved is usually $150. Getting one on arrival I don’t know if there is a charge, but you might have to wait quite a while until they decide they are ready to do it.
Did your outfitter ask you to bring ammo or you just thought good idea? I’ve rented rifles before in South Africa. We’ve stopped and bought more ammo, never an issue, although more expensive than USA.

Outfitter didn’t ask. Just wanted to bring as a gift. I’ve been over 4 times, but have never carried a rifle, always just a bow. So, just a learning curve regarding rifle importation for me

Back After a Long Time – Hello Again!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a member since 2015 but haven’t been active since 2017. Life got busy, especially with building my second business. Still, I’ve kept my passion for hunting and followed things from afar. Now that I have more time, I’m excited to reconnect, contribute, and be part of the community again.

All the best,
ANDY

I'd like a bag of 100. I could actually pick it up since I'm in North Irving, but if you prefer, shipping it is fine.
