Bringing ammo but not a rifle

There are better and much easier gifts to give. I’ve been asked to bring trail cameras before and SD cards. You are asking to create issues with ammo when it can be avoided if you’re still planning to hunt with a bow. If you really want to give some gifts instead of extra cash better to ask specifically what he needs. He likely gets a lot of leftover ammo already.

Thank you for your response.

I am a frequent visitor of Africa and am well versed on appropriate and easy gifts. I just wasn’t versed on the aspects of ammo or rifles.

I have been close to my PH for years and had indeed inquired about what he needed, which happened to be ammo. Hence the inquiry of the original post....

Namibia was always wanting a physical address where I was going. I didn't know. I said the guy who picks me up can tell you. They let me go.
My thoughts too. One of the biggest problems I’ve had in Africa was actually at the local airport in Windhoek. I made it through the international airport the day before no issues, but trying to fly to caprivi the officer gave me a huge issue over multiple knives. I brought them as gifts for staff and he wanted to see my declaration and permits for pocket knives! Finally I got mad and told him I opened the gun case for officer the day before same as I did in front of him and nothing was said, he finally let it go. I think you’re asking for a potential issue bringing brass even though 99% chance of making it through without being noticed.

I have done it several times to a PH friend in Botswana, he obtains an import for say 100 rounds, scan and e-mails me a copy and meet me at the airport bringing the original form...never a problem..

I assume you use a bow also? Depending on the caliber the 100 rounds would be close to 11 pound limit for ammo.

I just weighed my ammo for upcoming trip. 60 rounds of 9.3x74R and 40 rounds of .500 NE came out to 11.5 pounds. Will have to subtract a few rounds to get it down to 11 pounds.

No bow...usually we are talking quality .308Win. for culling etc., wich is hard to find down there..

The real issue is NOT bringing that 3rd rifle back through U.S. Customs (inspections both ways.) It's documented on a 4457. They will be keenly interested in its (international) disposition!
While I haven’t ever left a gun overseas, I put each rifle on its own Form 4457. You are allowed to use more than one form. Last week, I took six rifles to the Denver CBP office with six different pre-printed forms.

Yes that’s a common request but your PH isn’t at risk and he probably knows that he’s asking something a bit risky for you.

Yep. Having each gun with its own 4457 is the way to go. I need to make the trek myself soon with 2 shotguns and 3 rifles.
