Bob Nelson convinced me - 35 Whelen

Bob, thank you for the advice. I'll see if I can locate some CFE223. There's something about that 225gr Swift A-Frame....it seems to open well on varmints to elk sized game & holds together very well...as far as I know. I've never recovered one.

I haven't tried the 200gr Core-Lokt bullet but it appears to be stoning those plains game pretty well thus far.

Not to hijack the thread (I'm new here & don't want to burn any bridges) but what would be your starting load with CFE223 & 225gr Accubonds?

I've got an older Ruger 77 tang safety with Brown Precision stock & a 22" Shilen #4 bbl. I need to get it broke in soon.
@450 Rigby
The 200gr core lockt that @hunting Gold is using apper to be the ones designed for use in the 350 Remington magnum and are a beefed up version.
The starting load for CFE223 and 225gr projectiles is 60 grains and a max of 66 grains.

Speer says you can load up to 70gn of CFE223 behind the 225gn SPBT game king, BUT that is a very short projectile with a small bearing surface.
As you realise each brand of projectile is a law unto itself and loading data is given as a guide only.
CFE223 sits in between Varget and H4350.
For load data for 250gr see the speer online reloading site.

I can hear the howls of anguish and the gnashing of teeth now when I say that I have NEVER run a barrel in in my life. To me it is a waste of time ammo and game.
Take it out and shoot it when it gets dirty clean it. The more rounds you put thru it the less often you will need to clean it.
Even with a brand new barrel unless my groups start getting bigger I don't touch it. All I do after every range session or hunt is run a NYLON brush thru a few times followed by a couple of dry patches then 1 or 2 patches soacked with INOX lube that then gets patched out befoe use. I do this with both stainless and chrome moly barrels.

The beauty of CFE223 is that eliminates most coper fouling.

Bob,
Those Core Lokts are probably the “ultra bonded”. I have some 225gr .338 bonded.

We have left Rhinoster Hoek and have moved on to site sponsor, @KAROO WILD Safaris .
Tried to get a good look at a nyala bull tonight but he gave us the slip. Certainly was long enough but I'm looking for some handsome curves as well. Ill primarily be looking for grysbok and klipspringer here.... But who knows.
Anyways only a few more days of hunting then to Plettenberg Bay for Shannon.

Bob, you're right. Lots of anguish & gnashing teeth. I've actually got a Ruger 77 MkII Stainless in 358 Norma with a new stainless Shilen select match #4 24" bbl sitting in the safe too. Did I mention I love 35 calibers?? Gotta find time to go shoot soon.

Thank you for the load data. I took a look at the Speer website last night. Pretty intriguing data for 35 Whelen 225gr & 375 H&H with 270 gr bullets.

@HuntingGold I hope you find the curves you're after soon, no pun intended. Good luck!!!

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen I've never tried the 200gr Core Lokt. Didn't realize they had beefed up versions in 35 cal but I know Nosler does beef up the jacket & nose of some of their larger, heavy for caliber Partition & Accubond bullets like 200gr 30 cal, 250gr 338 /358 cal, 300gr 375 cal, etc.from what I've read. I've seen the Core Lokt bonded but never used them. I'm sure it works well for its intended purposes on soft skinned game at moderate ranges. The problem nowadays is finding any component bullets for a reasonable price....but that's another story.

I've used the 200gr Hornady Spire Points in 358 Winchester on hogs & it works quite well. None have taken a step inside 200 yds & they've all exited, even on hogs with mud caked up on them. I'd considered ripping some through the 35 Whelen just to see how nasty they'd be on hogs & deer.

Be good Bob, she's laying next to me. All is well.
@hunting Gold
I am being good mate. For letting you go to Africa and Hunting with her by your side takes a special woman ( I know I have one I'm married to) that deserves all your loving.

As you may have worked out I'm a Whelen nut.
I have a Llijla match grade stainless barrel on my fast 25 that has never been run in, just shot it. Still shoots 0.8 inch groups at 200 yards and my Whelen shoots less than an inch at 100 no matter what I throw down the barrel. The Whelen has a TSE Australian made stainless barrel never run in despite the instructions to otherwise.

I have some 250gr Hornady roundnose that put a big hurt on game and son 225gn Woodleigh round nose to try that should work well.

The mountain embarrassed me by revealing my poor fitness level since Covid. First shot was a clean miss at 225. Second is still an unknown entity. We thought he was hit and down, but lo and behold we found him looking at us when we were inspecting the area for blood. A third shot and I have my klippy.

That mountain is a climb! You were good and it was a fun morning

I'm hoping we see the 260 in action, with some details on bullet(s) and performance.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
