Blaser R8 for Dangerous Game

Have I mentioned I bought another R8 Professional, two barrels and two scope mounts last week? 7MM Rem Mag and 375 H&H. Both with iron sights. Figured this thread needed a bump.

Let me know when it goes on the “for sale block.”

That barrel combo is what I brought last summer. The .375 worked for ele, hippo, croc and PG. if you put the scopes in your carry-on you can get a second stock and a 3rd barrel in the Pelican 1700 case.

My daughter’s R8 was used as the loaner gun by my nephews last fall. The next step is to get a left handed bolt so my leftie family and friends can use one.
Which brings me to my question for left handed R8 users. (@Tanks ) is the LH bolt face necessary, or can one just eject to the wrong side with a left handed bolt and a right handed bolt face. I’ve never tried that and don’t know if it is a certain fail.

Finally, Toby, if I were to get another R8 barrel it would be a .257WBY. I can wait out this year for one to come through your kitchen.

Not sure, I'd call Blaser directly and ask.

Well, I guess you have PG covered.
And with my Kimber 458 Lott, I have everything else covered as well. I'm also waiting on my Winchester 70 416 to return from SSK with a shorter, lighter, stainless barrel installed. That should fit the bill as well!

GO Toby GO ! there is nothing like the taste of Blaser KoolAid Aid in the morning !

@Rickmt
Blasers may be a fine and dandy rifle for some but being a great tool for international travel and one the is spot on at all times is a good attribute but it's all a matter of perspective.
My Savage 35 Whelen was a great tool for international travel and puts all shots exactly where the rifle is pointed.
I'm not saying the Savage is better than the Blaser just that it's a matter of perspective. The Savage was what I had for Namibia and never failed in the dusty conditions so to me it is a great rifle that fits me very well, is accurate and reliable.
Perspective and the size of my wallet is only small.
Bob

I can certainly see your point. It is an expensive set up . Mine was right around $5500 .00 for both barrels all in. It will be interesting to see what I sell it for in 10-20 years when my travel days are done.

Left and right ejection bolts will work in both left or right handed bolt carriers. Cases will eject based on the bolt. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input!
Will a right hand bolt face cause issues for the shooter if I only get a left hand bolt carrier?
have you tried it that way?
Sounds cheap to not spend the extra $400, but does it make much difference if the round ejects the “wrong” way. A LH bolt carrier seems like a quick and easy way to make the rifle useable by friends/family.

If you used a left handed bolt head in a right handed bolt carrier, it would only really matter if you were ejecting brass while holding the rifle on your shoulder. The sent brass could possibly hit you in the face, since your head would be more to the right of the gun when shooting left handed.

I haven't tried it that way but I agree with Toby458, putting a right rejection bolt inserted in a left handed bolt carrier could eject the case onto the shooters face.

Not sure where to ask this but I’m thinking of picking up a 6.5 prc barrel for my r8. In the barrel guide it says standard bolt face I thought 6.5 prc needed a magnum bolt face? .532 am I wrong standard is .473. I have a magnum bolt now was hoping I wouldn’t need to purchase a standard

6.5 CM is a standard bolt face .473, 6.5 PRC is a Magnum .532.

I believe an AH member has a 300PRC R8 barrel, but I'm having trouble remembering who it was. Not sure of the similarities between the two, but I believe they share the same parent case.

Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.
