Bird Hunting Pictures

Duck season opened this morning in Idaho. My yellow lab, Buddy, enjoyed a great day. 3 limits of mallards with 20 & 28 gauge guns.

Red-legged partridge Spain. Driven shoot. Fast flyers to say the least. Plenty of tradition, exceptional hospitality. Those birds embarrassed me.

The early years. From the Canadian border in Montana to New Mexico and Texas. Mostly just my GSP and me traveling in my cabover camper to chase a variety of birds. Wonderful memories!
He never complained when I missed, but instead was off to find another. He and I agreed it was all about the hunt watching him do his magic of finding birds.

Dreaming near the end…”just one more hunt?”
I envy you younger guys getting into upland hunting behind a young dog.

A much younger/leaner Firebird with Utah ptarmigan and band-tailed pigeons. The little setter is Zeke, he did a good job that day. The pigeons I collected with a big Chesapeake named Riggs. Riggs and I collected every huntable species in Utah except patarmigan, those came a bit later.

Beautiful pic of your Chessie and that Canvasback. Been wanting a late season can my whole life, but never had the opportunity, I rarely see them where I live. Is that the Great SL wetlands and looks like the Uintas for your Ptarmigan? Lots of days spent backpacking there as a youth, nostalgic post for me.

Good looking Chessie! Where did you get the band tailed pigeons?

Yes-bear river bird refuge and uintas, where there wasn’t much oxygen and only us, some pretty little fish and some goats.
Pigeons from south east utah. Ive
Killed them since in Arizona and will hunt them next year in California.-

I'm fortunate to live in Saskatchewan, Canada where we have such an abundance and variety of hunting opportunities. These bird hunting photos were all taken during a few of my hunts over the last two weeks.

Those are great! I spent a couple of weeks around Dundern and Outlook. We had excellent hunting for ducks, geese, cranes , Huns and Sharptail. If I remember correctly pheasant were of limits to non residents.

Results of ysterday's trip to vet were devastating. Indications are my eight year-old Lab has damaged her right rear cranial cruciate ligament (ACL in humans). There goes my upland season. She can still function but favored that leg after a workout. Trying to determine which surgery is in order. My little twelve year-old Fr Britt is a cancer survivor and doing great right now but I'm fairly certain this would have been her last hunting trip to Montana. Maybe my last trip too. Sigh!

I had a Chessie tear his ACL when he was 9 , he had stepped into an armadillo hole chasing a goose. He had surgery in mid September. He was back making water retrieves by mid January and back to 100% by the beginning of the next September early teal and goose season. Keep positive!!

Heading out a week from today on a crane hunt, hope to have some pictures soon after.

Great post. Who doesn’t love seeing pics of dogs doing what they love.

Here is a blast from the past. Mid to late 80’s I think, when stationed in SC
when it was a big deal for me to get my limit of doves with one box of shells:>)))

One of my GSP’s from the 90’s “Maverick” , he was a natural in all aspects. I sent him to a trainer for finishing and he caught Parvo and died. The trainer sent me a machine of a fully finished female. Because he felt bad. She was great in every way except being a pet. She was all business.

And a friend with his retriever while in SD in the 90’s

Hi Jon,
I saw your post for the .500 NE cases. Are these all brass or are they nickel plated? Hard for me to tell... sorry.
Thanks,
