Big Bore Addiction Group

It is my understanding that there is more work required to go from 375 to 404 as the bolt face has to be enlarged. With the 300 RUM to 404 the bolt is fine as-is, and the feed ramps should be fine as well, along with the magazine set up to hold the same size cartridge...just a new barrel is needed. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I had a Win M70 375H&H re-barelled to 404 Jeffery. All they had to do to the bolt face was make a couple of extractor cuts. Everything else was pretty straight forward. The donor rifle I used was a 375 H&H stainless M70. It had a slightly heavier barrel contour therefore very little work was required to make it fit. The barrel channel may have to be opened up a bit more if it has a standard factory barrel on yours than on the one I had done. I guess it would depend on what barrel contour your donor rifle is vs what you have install. Good luck with the project. I'm having a lot of fun shooting mine.

It started with a zkk-602 in 375 h&h , then a 458 win mag on a ruger 77 , chas osborne 450/400 3.25 double , cz 416 rigby , win safari in 416 rem , and the big girl at the moment is a 500 a-square on a ruger no1..........they breed like tupperware if you take your eye off them

These big guns certainly have a powerful draw to them. A couple of years ago I decided I needed a 375H&H, after a lot of talking, I ended up with a Sako Kodiak 375H&H, bought off an now very good friend, I met on this very forum. I love the rifle and in all honesty it is likely to be my biggest gun for a while yet, however after just returning from a trip to South Africa, being involved in some very cool hunts and seeing my Father in laws 470NE and brother in laws 500NE in action, the appeal of a bigger calibre is very strong.

I think I will try and hold out and hopefully down the track be in a position to purchase a double in either a 470NE or 500NE. Converting my mates to the big gun way, may help somewhat lol.

I'm dipping my toes in the Big Bore pool. Just bought a .404 Jeffery. It was made by forum member VonGruff. Haven't got my hands on it yet, but should have it in a week.

I like it!

Looks like a 404 should look.

Well after talking to Matt at SCI last year and giving it some thought. This week I bought a Stiller action and ordered the barrel, cases and dies from Ed Hubel to build a 575 HE. 8-12 weeks to get the stuff into Canada 4 weeks, with luck to have it put together. Should have it up and running by spring. Can't wait.

Great looking 404 Jeff. Congrats and welcome.

Build your own. 300 RUM or 375H&H action (375H&H will need extractor cuts), rebarrel to 404 open up barrel channel, and voila les 404!

That is just old-school cool. Love it!

Congrats stug, I never thought he's sell that rifle!!!!

When I first saw pics of the rifle a few years ago I thought I should mention to VonGruff that if he wanted to sell I would like to buy it, but I never did. I heard later that he had sold it.
A few days ago I put a question on another site about the suitability of a Parker Hale action for a .404 Jeff build. Within 24 hours I had been offered the rifle by the person who bought it off VonGruff. I didn't have the money and needed to sell one of my other rifles. I put it on a local rifle selling website and sold it within 30 minutes!
So within 24 hours of thinking about a build I had a fully finished rifle that I had wanted a few years ago.
Life does take some funny turns.

Now thats a rifle I wouldnt mind in my cabinet. The wood on it is amazing and its not too figured (have you ever fired a big bore rifle with a highly figured stock ( ouch)).

must have just been the way stock was cut of how I mounted the rifle

@spike.t , hope I am not hijacking this thread but I guess it is all big bore rifles here .

Question :

I am wanting to cut a CZ 550 in 458 Lott barrel to between 21" and 22" , how will this make the rifle perform or will it have any negative (if any ) consequences?

hi i dont know the velocity differences etc with 21 as opposed to 23/24 inch barrels , as dont have a chrony thing (i am sure @matt85 will know) . i have 21inch lott and 22inch barreled lott rifles and i havent used the 21 inch on anything yet apart from a puku, but the 22inch has been used on a wounded buff and to finish an ele off when my friends rifle had a technical after the first shot. neither seemed to notice that it "only" had a 22 inch barrel ;) i like that length as it makes for a nice carry rifle, and i dont like long barrels none of mine are longer than 22 inch.

thanks, I know you have a shortened version, that's why I asked , I am leaning towards the 22"

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France
