Big Bore Addiction Group

Sandman that Rigby is absolutely superb! Thanks so much for posting the pictures and the story.

I would dearly love to see pictures of the other guns you mentioned, and especially some nice details of those stocks!

Cody;
I'm nice and warm in the house... The poor gun is out in the truck but at least in the garage.

Yea it will be tucked away soon enough... But I put it on the credit card so I have until the end of the month when she pays that off I may get questions. But that gives me time to spend a comparable amount on her for valentines so it might get buried in there. LOL

But thanks for your concern!

Idaram I was hanging my head in shame that I only get them down $100! The salesman did not have authority to come down further or I think he would have... They do not get guys walking in every day for these big bores! He said I could wait until tomorrow and call his boss to negotiate further but I would have blown another $50 in gas anyway if I had to go back, and my instinct told me to jut buy it. So thanks for the confidence builder!

I'm sure they still made money on it... Probably some widow or poor kids who sold dear old dads guns off who really lost out.

Even if it needs a new stock, I've been drooling over those Accurate Innovation ones anyway.

@sandman0921 I would love to see and hear more about that Ruger and Winchester! How does one go about getting an Accurate Innovations stock? And what do they cost?

Bob

The Ruger RSM is very fine rife, you got away with murder for $950.

sounds like you did good Bob! the 416 Rigby is a great classic cartridge that really shines if your a hand loader.

speaking of that, you decided to take up hand loading yet?

Well the stock is rough.... and small cracks so not sure how that effects the real value. But I bought it with this in mind and tht I may need to re-stock it.

Matt I was counting on you showing up! I looked around at reloading stuff while I waited for paperwork and IDK? Not cheap to get all the equipment but I'm much more concerned about time right now.... Someday when I have the time (if).

For now, probably not. If I get desperate I might have to work out a deal with some friends;)

Congratulations on the RSM. Had mine for a year and in almost perfect condition. Without any question, is my favorite rifle since I bought it. As suggested by a previous post, until you start reloading, .416 Rigby brass is like gold. If you don't want your spent brass, let me know. I'll drive up once a year to Mn. and collect it!

It does say RUGER. MAGNUM on the left side of the receiver. The stock has what looks to me like a rub mark across it. And you can see the little cracks on top in the second photo.

Yea I'll shoot it a bit this way and see how it goes, maybe get 50 rounds or so through her and see if those cracks go any further? In any case, I'm thinking it can live at my place for as long as it takes to decide where to go from here with it. Not like I'm short on big bore guns to hunt with.

Matt how is your 416 fairing? Did you do anything with the stock or is it holding up ok?

other then the damage that failed primer did, the gun is fairing great. im very happy with it and wouldn't hesitate to take it hunting with me any where!

oh yea, if any of you big bore junkies are going to be at the SCI convention this Friday, keep an eye out for me. ill be passing out sample 585 HE cases along with a small flier to those who are interested as a favor to Mr. Hubel. I don't have many maybe around 30, so once they are gone that's it. just look for the rather heavy set gentleman with short hair in his early 30s in a t-shirt and jeans who wont shut up about guns/cartridges. its a fair bet you will find me near guns. ;)

OK Bob, judging by what I can see from the pics that is an early model RSM. Ruger made 3 generations and yours looks like Gen 1. The Gen 1 guns had 24" barrels, but that was changed to a 23" barrel in Gen 2 & 3. Also, the barrel band location was changed which is the best indicator of a Gen 1 gun. Yours appears to have the barrel band under the fore end as opposed to just in front of the fore end. Gen 2 & 3 the barrel band is completely exposed and not partially covered by the fore end.
If I may, I would offer this advice. Take the gun apart completely before firing ANY rounds through it. The RSM's are somewhat unique in the way they are put together and bedded / inlet. You gun may have the slight cracks in the stock because the prior owner(s) weren't careful about having things assembled properly and screws properly tightened. There' a little bit of a methodology to properly assembling and tightening stuff so that recoil is properly managed and distributed specifically so the stock won't split. It is very simple and pretty self explanatory, but VERY worthwhile to give her a little love before heading to the range.
If ya need anything, just give me a shout. I really think you're gonna like it :D

We are still in the hiding out in the truck stage yet....

Bob,

I keep offering to store these extra rifles for you. I can't be held responsible for what the wife does to you if you don't take me up on it.... ;)

IdaRam, Thanks for the advice and all the info!

Looks like it was used and beat around a bit, or maybe whomever had it just was not real careful as it has those rubs and several nicks... And it is all dusty and a little grimy inside... So best to tear her down and clean her up good anyway.

Royal that darn Dodge keeps turning in everytime I drive by a gun shop and then I get temped by these things!

Royal these are all the right kind of guns... Not the lefties you want.

True, but don't forget I grew up with right handed bolts! You'd be surprised at how fast I can cycle the bolt, And off sticks or prone I bet I'm as fast or faster than most right handed folks are since my trigger hand never loses grip. :)

I heard that if you drive a Prius they don't turn into gun stores or BBQ stands! I for one am just gonna stick with the inconvenience of my pickup frequenting these establishments as it seems I was not born with a left wing at all and wouldn't be able to steer a Prius to the Granola Getting Place.lol
