Wow Mike that is a beauty! Understandable why you had to have it.

well been toying with the idea and looking to see what was available as Doc , wheels and the other .404 boys seem to like it a lot, and this just happened to appear!!! took 4 or 5 days of the monkey on each shoulder trying to win the yes you need it and no you dont argument between them.........the addicted monkey must have performed louder me thinks !!:E Rofl:

Mr. Spike.T,

That new .404 you've ordered is all as a .404 or any other caliber African DG repeater should be.
How all these other companies ever sell their Star Trek looking contraptions is a mystery to me.

Congrats, it's a beauty,
Mr. VD.

Well I bought my first big bore in 416 Ruger I really like the gun. It shoots great. But.... It has a muzzle break so the verdicts still out on if I would like a shoulder cannon w/ out a break. I would however give my left arm for a nice 375 h&h double gun. Erik

Congrats on the new 416! You can hunt about anything on the planet with that. Only issue you might have is if you don't reload finding the best load and bullet combo.

Ballistics are basically identical to the 416 Rem Mag.... So assuming the gun is an appropriate weight, you should be able to learn to shoot it without the brake, but if you want, practice with the brake on, take it off to hunt because you won't feel the recoil when shooting at large critters with it anyway.

I did develop a new love/hate/mostly hate relationship with muzzle brakes yesterday. It was very nice weather and I had not been shooting lately so after a busy day, I rushed out to the range with a couple guns late in the afternoon. Took my wife's 375 Ruger Guide Gun with the brake and my M70 375 H&H, as well as her 30-06 Guide Gun.

In my rush to get shooting (I was the only person out there and only had 45 minutes before dark) I had a heavy stocking hat on and forgot hearing protection. Pulled the trigger on the Ruger with the brake and just about blew out my left ear! Damn it was ringing all night and I still feel it. Got my muffs on pretty quickly but really should have plugs in and muffs on! As for recoil, it certainly cuts that back, I would say by half. I brought her 30-06 along as well and have the brake off that one and I would say they kick about the same. Biggest thing about the brake is it pretty much takes out all muzzle jump.

But shooting my M70 375 without a brake is no big deal anymore. I was shooting from the bench off sand bags to check zeros after bringing the guns back home from Zimbabwe last Nov. All these guns have good pads on them and my shoulder took no abuse at all. The 416 does move things up another 20-25% but still manageable.

Learn to hold the gun and get it positioned properly into your shoulder and cheek, have the scopes in the right place, take time to mess around and get adjustments right and you'll have no problems.

An interesting side note, that '06 has a Leupold VX3 2.5-8 on it and the 375's have Leupold VX6 2-12's. HUGE difference in scope quality and the brightness, clarity and size of the view. That little vx3 is known as a real good scope and popular even as a DG scope in many circles.... The VX6 takes it up a major notch. I was shooting at the the same magnifications to compare, and there just is no comparison. Especially after the sun goes down.

Velo Dog, that's not a bad idea but I lack the equipment and know-how to do it my self.

I found new hope in a nifty cartridge called the 585 Hubel Express. im still researching the cartridge so I don't know much about it yet but its a 3.25" strait case with a belt and the same rim as the 505 Gibbs. basically any rifle chambered for the 505 Gibbs should be able to be rebarreled to 585 HE. American Hunting Rifles produces a rifle in this chambering.

Hi again Matt,

Likewise, I do not have a lathe, but I could run one if I was able to remember what I had learned about them in High School metal shop (I graduated from same just about the time that gunpowder was being discovered, simultaneously over in China and what is now Germany).

All this is not to mention that I do not have any interest in wildcatting whatsoever, except to read about them and pat myself on the back for not taking up yet another expensive hobby, especially a very hard kicker wildcat like you are describing.

Recoil from factory spec .458 Lott and the .500 Jeffery as well, are too much for me to fire very many times in a row.

So, I load those down a bit and thus I can train with them properly at my local rifle range (I am blessed to live only about 2 miles from it).

I have fired a .600 NE with full house hand-loads and was delighted that the two shots I launched were not as bad as I thought they'd be.

However, they were more than my tolerance level can abide as a steady diet and so, I recon anything in the realm of the .577 NE (or rimless equivalent) is likely to be too much for me to fire more than probably a couple shots per week, as well.

I will however stand by for your progress on this project, as you are an interesting writer and I always enjoy your posts.

Cheerio,
Velo Dog.

thanks for the praise, i certainly value your opinion Velo Dog!

i got an email back from the gentleman who is building 585 HE guns and he is willing to build me a rifle based on an Enfield action for a very good price! if i understood the email correctly he will include 100 pieces of new 585 HE brass with the rifle which should be good for a life time!

my goal is a 12-12.5 pound rifle with a 24" barrel shooting a load that will match or slightly exceed the 577 NE. im thinking roughly 2050-2100 fps should be perfect with a 750gr Barnes TSX/solid.

another bright side to using a gun with a .585" barrel is i can use 58 cal minie balls as cheap plinking ammunition.

Matt,

If you start another thread for .500 and above I'm going to have to buy another gun.... may need to start working on my story to the wife!

ok I got a sample pack from Mr. Hubel and it included some dummy cartridges, so its picture time!

here is a variety of heavy hitting cartridges I have on hand:

Left-Right: 375 H&H, 450/400 NE 3", 500/416 NE, 416 Rem Mag, 505 Gibbs, and the 585 Hubel Express (last two).

here is the 585 HE next to the 375 H&H:

here is a fun one, its a empty 375 H&H case inside a 585 HE case:

I love big bores! :E Happy:

That's a cool comparison with the 375 case.:E Eek:

Whats the case capacity difference to the 505?
I think that may warrant a new classification... ultra big bore??

feeling a bit lazy at the moment so I just checked the Wikipedia. ;)

505 Gibb = 178gr capacity (water)
585 HE = 212gr capacity (water)

Mercy !

haha don't worry Velo Dog, my plan is to down load the 585 HE to a 750gr bullet at 2100fps. Mr. Hubel designed it for a standard operating speed of 2400fps but im not sure im ready for that!

that will def out do the frozen herring!!!!!!!!!:E Shocked::E Lol:

that would probably depend on what kind of velocity you can get with the frozen herring.
