Well I bought my first big bore in 416 Ruger I really like the gun. It shoots great. But.... It has a muzzle break so the verdicts still out on if I would like a shoulder cannon w/ out a break. I would however give my left arm for a nice 375 h&h double gun. Erik
Congrats on the new 416! You can hunt about anything on the planet with that. Only issue you might have is if you don't reload finding the best load and bullet combo.
Ballistics are basically identical to the 416 Rem Mag.... So assuming the gun is an appropriate weight, you should be able to learn to shoot it without the brake, but if you want, practice with the brake on, take it off to hunt because you won't feel the recoil when shooting at large critters with it anyway.
I did develop a new love/hate/mostly hate relationship with muzzle brakes yesterday. It was very nice weather and I had not been shooting lately so after a busy day, I rushed out to the range with a couple guns late in the afternoon. Took my wife's 375 Ruger Guide Gun with the brake and my M70 375 H&H, as well as her 30-06 Guide Gun.
In my rush to get shooting (I was the only person out there and only had 45 minutes before dark) I had a heavy stocking hat on and forgot hearing protection. Pulled the trigger on the Ruger with the brake and just about blew out my left ear! Damn it was ringing all night and I still feel it. Got my muffs on pretty quickly but really should have plugs in and muffs on! As for recoil, it certainly cuts that back, I would say by half. I brought her 30-06 along as well and have the brake off that one and I would say they kick about the same. Biggest thing about the brake is it pretty much takes out all muzzle jump.
But shooting my M70 375 without a brake is no big deal anymore. I was shooting from the bench off sand bags to check zeros after bringing the guns back home from Zimbabwe last Nov. All these guns have good pads on them and my shoulder took no abuse at all. The 416 does move things up another 20-25% but still manageable.
Learn to hold the gun and get it positioned properly into your shoulder and cheek, have the scopes in the right place, take time to mess around and get adjustments right and you'll have no problems.
An interesting side note, that '06 has a Leupold VX3 2.5-8 on it and the 375's have Leupold VX6 2-12's. HUGE difference in scope quality and the brightness, clarity and size of the view. That little vx3 is known as a real good scope and popular even as a DG scope in many circles.... The VX6 takes it up a major notch. I was shooting at the the same magnifications to compare, and there just is no comparison. Especially after the sun goes down.
