Best Shellfish?

European lobster, that I occasionally catch.
On the photo, my son is holding 2 kg specimen.

I love seafood but living in Saskatchewan pretty much limits my chances of anything fresh or any kind of variety. Most of the different kinds mentioned here I’ve never sampled before. I’m very lucky if I get to see an ocean every five years or so. That being said, in 2021 we made a trip out to B.C. To visit our niece on Gabriola Island which is a short ferry ride across from Nanaimo. I booked a half day fishing for us all and we caught ling cod and quill backs. While we were fishing we had two prawn traps soaking for white-spot prawns. Everything was delicious but the prawns were my favourite.

My wife is originally from the West coast of Newfoundland. I got to make my first visit out there in 2019. My brother-in-law one day was able to get a bucket of capelin straight off the boat and that was a new experience for me. However the cooler full of lobsters only a few hours out of the was the highlight for me.

My absolute favourite seafood that’s I’ve enjoyed was not in Canada, but in South Africa. When we went hunting in the Eastern Cape back in 2018 we decided to book a hotel for a couple night before being picked up by Marius Goosen. We stayed at the Radisson Blu right across the street from the beach in Port Elizabeth. The first night I had the fresh calamari and was completely blown away by the tenderness and flavour. I loved it so much I had it for lunch and supper the next day!
All you folks that have easy access to a wide variety of fresh seafood are a fortunate!

Fresh, still warm prawns, bought fron the fisherman and enjoyed sitting on the quay! Just the prawns and maybe a bottle of cold beer.

Due to the marvel of salmon farming there are no more prawns in the fjords arund here :-(

Spike, eating like that how do you have time to hunt? It all looked wonderful! H. A

At my place it is common to go and catch calamari (or squids) in winter months, starting from November.
When I am on squid fishing trip, with a boat across the channel (10 nautical miles from my home) the best event is to put live squid on the pan with hot oil. (without gutting).
The taste is phenomenal.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
