Best looking round

Maybe I missed it but the fine .338 Win mag should at least get a mention.

Looks pricey for a box of that vintage.
A Classic round no doubt but I think Kevin was asking about Classy.

Never mind. The .338 has its place and I have always thought it would be a good bear hunting round and has been chambered in suitable all weather rifles for that purpose.

That price tag was a gun show item a few years back. A guy had 3 boxes of it, so I snagged it. Thats a 250gr Silvertip.
Early on Win made a 300 gr load but it was not the Silvertip.
K doesnt mention Classy, just good looking and the .338 qualifies.

8mm Rem Mag, .375 H&H, and .416 Rem Mag. I like all three but the proportions of the 8mm and performance on PG appeal to me.

Actually, that isn't a bad price at all for those vintage cartridges, especially if the box is in good condition. I've seen vintage ammo prices a lot higher on Gun Joker. The 300gr. bullets were Power Points. Elmer Keith apparently preferred that bullet until he later switched to 275gr. Speers.

@CBH Australia
Chris, Chris, Chris If'n the wee little 338 was such a good bear round why did Elmer Keith take his world record bear with a 35 Whelen loaded with 275gn projectiles when he could have used his 33OKH.
Bob.

Answer: because Keith and his pals didnt develop the .333 OKH until 1945, the bear with the Whelen happened in 1937.
I believe he preferred the .333 after that because it penetrated better. Aint no flies on that round being a ballistic equivalent to the .338-06.
And the .338 Win mag is well regarded as an excellent bear round in Alaska, well thought of. Pretty much its intended use.

@sestoppelman
That picture is when Winchester made real hunting bullets with those silver tips. They just seemed to work no matter the caliber from 257 Roberts up.
Bob
Was there a Silvertip for .243?
Ohh, I get it. If it's not a .25 it don't count

Because that's what he was carrying at the time.
He wasn't gonna pass on a world class bear cause if it didn't eat him it wasn't gonna be there when he came back with a .375

Ah ha! The Keith-bear-cartridge mystery solved. Thanks for clarifying Stoppelman!

Yeeesh! I don’t know Bob, those look only slightly better than your high school yearbook picture. :A Shades:
@Randy F
I never got any high school year books and all those I have seen had my face blacked ot because I was so stunningly handsome it embarrassed the others.

Bob I think you need to take your medication again ,2 6mm pills twice a day until you feel better. ;) on a more serious subject i am thinking about re barreling my no4 303
to 303/25 what do you think?

Or, have it rebarreled and chambered to .35BNE (Banzai Nelson Express)? 7.7 Jap case necked up to .35. You'd be the first on your block (or anywhere) to have one.

@rdog
Go for it mate but headspace to 62 thou instead of 64 as rim thickness varies a bit. If you would like to borrow my 25/303 Epps reamer give me a call. My son gets 25 ought six velocities out of his with mild pressure. Load calculations say 47,000 cup.
Remember the No will handle the 7.62 NATO round so you will have fun.

@CoElkHunter

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
