Steve Dettelbach, the Director of the US's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, will resign effective on January 18, 2025. I am pretty sure he would have been fired by incoming President Trump if he had not.

I am no American but historic decreases in violent crime? Seems a stretch or is it correct?

I would have done the same. No desire to ride the coming train wreck. This is not unusual anyway. Always a flood of new appointees with every change of administration.

historic decreases is bullshit... the FBI's own data shows very SMALL decreases over the last couple of years (crime increased significantly during COVID).. but overall crime rates are still higher than pre-covid rates in most major metropolitan areas..

The Fed Govt has been adjusting what crimes are actually reported, and when they are reported.. to make rates LOOK lower.. and then they end up with conflicting reports that they refuse to address (for example the FBI reported violent crime overall down about 2.2% just before the election... but now they are saying its actually up about 4% in 2024 in most jurisdictions)..

There are lies, damn lies and statistics. :-). They can cook the books however they want by re-defining terms/classifications and by some of these "restorative justice" DAs not filing charges or filing charges that are so watered down they don't reflect the nature of the offense. In short, his statistics may be "accurate", for lack ofd a better term, but the reality is he is a full baked moron. His letter reads like it was drafted by a middle school kid as well.

I shot at a pigeon shoot recently and shot a round with an ATF agent. He was seemingly a nice guy. He intimated this guy was a clown.

Beat me to it. I posted my kindergarten analysis--but they are consistent. :)

Historic decrease after historic increase during the pandemic = back to normal. I guess that's something ... but just a very little something. Give him a cheap watch and a frosted cupcake on the way out the door. See ya.

The train has been off the rails for the last four years and the conductor didn't have the capacity to realize it. Dettelbach was as clueless as Biden. It unfortunate to have limited mental capacity, but it is something quite different to have limited capacity and think you are the smartest guy in the room.

This is also true...

Sadly, this is a game that gets played at the municipal and state level much more than the federal level though.. the fed just takes advantage of it by claiming "victory" whenever a stat goes down..

an example I can give from my own personal experience... 25+ years ago I was assigned to a "vice" type unit for a little while.. we were mostly focused on "pocket dope" (picking off the street level dealers and junkies) and prostitution rings.. but also dabbled in other "street" level crimes (illegal firearms sales, gang activities, etc)..

while assigned to a regional task force, the team I was on had jurisdictional authority across a fairly large area that included both major metro and rural communities..

We had a particular mayor and a chief of police in one of the major metro suburbs that absolutely refused to enforce any drug or prostitution cases within their suburbs schools...

Everyone that lived within 20 miles of this particular place knew that the high school in this suburb was completely out of control, overrun by the gangs, dope being delt on campus in high volumes, etc..

But.. since no dope related arrests were ever made... the city could report it had the lowest drug crime rates of any school district in that part of the state..

Shameful, shitty, abhorrent, politically motivated behavior... but unfortunately not uncommon in some places..

If its not the mayor or senior police administrators playing statistics games, its the DA's, judges, etc..

"Historic"? He forgot to add the word "reported". Uninsured petty property crimes aren't usually reported but they are rampant in my neck of the woods, Catch and Release Delaware.

Have to look closely at the crime "rates". The present dogma is that the illegal alien invasion is good because the illegals commit fewer crimes... hard to prove. But if so... the rate would go down as more Americans are murdered... those who wouldn't have been if no illegals present. ATF is a "dirty" agency.

My ATF guy is cool as heck. Hope they get a good new director. They certainly have improved the time it takes to get approvals on Form 4’s from the Barry O days.

While I really dislike the ATF as an agency.. the ATF guys I've worked with at different times have largely been pretty good guys...

Yes, there can be (and are) good guys within the agency. But if called upon to cross the line to keep their job...???

Statistics are just a d*ck measuring contest...the government has put out garbage for years and at this point nobody believes it as they have lost the trust of the American voting public. What really matters is when I walk outside to go to work, or go out to dinner with the family do I feel safer or not. Do I worry that my car or house will be broken into, or worse? That is the yard stick...based on what I am seeing I don't feel it.

If crime has decreased somebody needs to tell the insurance companies...car and home owners premiums have gone nuts. I know a lot of it is due to inflation and replacement cost but the risk of the pool by each zip code has increased as well.

that same question could be asked of pretty much anyone and any industry....

how about people in the healthcare profession that were anti-vax but participated in not only vaxing others, but got the shot (and all boosters) themselves because their jobs were more important than their own personal values?

like I said, Im not a fan of the ATF... mostly because I think they are an unnecessary agency.. you could easily merge them into any other federal law enforcement agency (FBI, USMS, etc) get rid of all of the administrative costs and facilities costs.. and they'd be just as functional...

I also don't like their mission... they are at their core a "tax" agency (their whole mission is based on the collection of taxes associated with alcohol, tobacco, and firearms)..

All of that said, they do a very good job overall training investigators.. the guy that led the DC Sniper investigation on the ATF side of things ran circles around the FBI and other investigators IMO.. he was also the same guy that led the 911 Pentagon attack investigation on the ATF side, once again running circles around the FBI, DOD investigators, etc..

One of the guys I worked with closely at the World Bank was a retired ATF investigator.. he ran an open source protective intelligence program that was truly world class..

They have done a pretty good job over the years recruiting and training some people that are very good at their jobs..

I just don't like what their traditional job is most of the time..

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
