AR-type Rifles

Hi 375 Ruger Fan,

1.
Unless Ruger has changed their specs, the Mini-14 may as well be a smooth bore, as accuracy in the one’s I have fired was without exception, simply terrible.
2.
A well made AR Model does not need a “forward assist” gadget.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

That is very true, if a round isn't chambering, pushing harder on it isn't something I am interested in doing. I do like to cut out the sides of the mag well, I have an issue, I can drop the mag and have easy access to the feed ramp/bolt face.

Is it worth it to pay more for a gas piston system over direct impingement?

I have been searching around but it seems that everyone is sold out or charging ridiculous prices. I should have seen this coming.

I remember tossing some 30 round mags to a brother and saying ,"now you can miss ten more times before you gotta reload".

For many years now I have been selling guns and ammo to people who appeared to be arming themselves for some apocalyptic hoedown and to listen to them its easy to figure out that most are pogues.
Back when George Wallace was running for president, I remember many buying guns and getting ready for the coming race war. Then again there were Black Panthers in the plant where I worked who kept guns in their lockers. Pretty wild times, not unlike today.

I would stay with gas. I have a few piston systems, but I think gas is the way to go.

BCM and CMMG are still in stock and the same price they have been for months.

This is not a deal, but it is better than nothing by a wide margin.

PS:
Perhaps it goes without saying but, a poorly made AR could also prove to be as inaccurate as the 1970s and ‘80s vintage Mini-14s I had tried.
The Colt HBAR Model AR that was once issued to me (late 1980’s), was delightfully accurate and reliable as well.
Likewise the HBARS my team mates were using all proved very accurate.
Fast forward to present day...in the USA, (despite our crooked politician's best efforts) we are blessed with an abundance of excellent firearms to choose from.
The AR design is now made by several excellent companies.

Saul, yourself and others are wise to shop carefully before deciding which one to buy.
If I knew which maker was the best, I sure would say so.
But, there are seemingly so many now that I am clueless.
I don’t even know if Colt is still making them or not now or, if they are, wether or not their quality is still up to speed with their late 1980’s specs.

You cannot go wrong w Daniel Defense. Have a v5 and it never jams and shoots accurately out to 300 yards. I have seen a few SIG ARs, too, and they also were excellent. Some guys like the H&K 416, and go gaga talking about gas and bolts, too, but both seem to work really well.

Should I buy one? Is it better than the M&P?

Well I wouldn't say it is better, but it is in stock.

I would buy a BCM upper and a cheaper lower if it were me. But I wouldn't get hung up on all this, don't let all the options cause you to not buy something. This buying craze isn't going away anytime soon, your options are only going slimmer for the time being.

I am feeling that "itch" to buy some more guns so really I just need to find some worth buying.

Just get the bolt and trigger as add on options on the upper, you will have a fine rifle.

RE DI vs Piston...

Piston offers some advantages if youre intending on running a short gun (8"?) or a suppressor..

There was a time you couldnt get a shorty upper to run reliably..

Most of that has been figured out over the past few years though and most DI guns intentionally built a 7, 8, 10" rifles run just fine (assuming they were built correctly, etc)..

If youre not intending on running suppressed or building an SBR or AR pistol.. I personally wouldnt consider a piston gun.. and even if you are planning on running suppressed or an SBR.. I dont think its that much of an improvement (although some would argue any improvement is worth any price)..

in a nutshell, piston guns tend to run much cleaner and much cooler than DI guns.. and clean and cool is paramount when kicking doors in dirty houses and using a 10" rifle with a 6" can screwed on the end..

DI guns as a general rule are more accurate.. and more cost effective.. and in a 16" unsuppressed gun.. every bit as reliable as a piston gun

Unfortunately, it's easy to overthink an AR purchase. Flip a coin. In today's market if you don't like it, you can have a buyer tomorrow and probably for more than what you paid.

Aside that, I would also advise against a Mini 14. The pros are few and the cons are long. A less accurate semi, I have never shot or seen.

In today's market, the issue is finding an AR rifle that are in stock. Your next hurdle will be to find magazines, and ammo at a reasonable price.

Unless you are really into tinkering, I would buy the best off the shelf rifle you can afford. You can hang a light, find the right optical sight, and play with slings and suppressors. Once you know your way around it, then start the whole uppers and lowers mixing and matching if you are interested. By the way, that is of zero interest to me. I simply want a reliable firearm set up so I can use it effectively. But I get it.

Part of the fascination with AR's is the whole customization opportunity. It is like the .45 and .38 Super race guns thirty years ago. A big part of the allure was tricking them out. The AR offers that same opportunity on steroids.

I chose PWS over Daniel Defense. Just liked more & felt was better value. Very pleased my rifles..... I have in 223 & 308.
