Anyone else like red dots on long guns..?

I have a red dot on my Mossberg 500 which is set up for home defense. Of course, a number of my ARs have red dots or dot-donut (EOTech).
JPR9954, in a Home Defense situation (is there a shot over 40 feet away?) would there be anybenefit to “any sight” ? Wouldn’t it be a Point-Shoot situation? I’ve never been in that situation so No expert.

I've seen one guy at the skeet/clays range that had a red dot on a shotgun, but I didn't see him shoot. I'm sure it would work fine, but with shotgunning I've never been concerned with "aiming". Typically if you are looking at the front sight (or red dot) you are not focusing on the target...which is where your eyes need to be.
BeeMaa, you might like a video on Utube - shows Worlds best Sporting Clays shooters “testing” an Aimpoint on their shotguns and breaking Sporting Clays targets (including George Digweed). I was very surprised to see most of them had No criticism of the device, All shot and broke almost every target (but they rarely miss anyway). Now, the video was made by AIMPOINT, not sure if the shooters were paid and unlikely any would express negative comments, so it might not be objective….but it was interesting.

Shooters at the skill level of George Digweed (top 1% in the world) have little need for trinkets like a red dot. It's proof that skills are more valuable than the equipment. If you gave George a $500 SxS shotgun I'm sure he could outshoot any club level guy with whatever shotgun they want to bring.

Equipment can make a big difference in how fast one can progress the skills needed, but there's no replacement for proper training and range time. Speaking of that, I may just head to the clays range today.

Agree Digweed is Not a good comparison for the effectiveness of a “red dot” since he could hit with a Gatorade bottle on the end of his barrel. I’d like to see a video of average/Hunter Class shooters (most shoot 50% and less on a competitive course) shooting Sporting Clays with and WITHOUT a Red Dot sight: What were their results??
In the Video What surprised me was the consistent shooting by ALL participants and while they were All Top World Class Shooters - there was little difference when the AimPoint was added — they Didn’t Miss. I expected that it would have had an “adverse effect” but that was not the case. I don’t care for the “look” or even the thought of using an Aimpoint Red Dot on my shotgun…but BUT - If it enabled me to shoot at Master Class Level (or even bump Me up to “A” Class) I would buy one tomorrow. Unfortunately, I don’t think anything is getting me into that “World Class” circle..

BeeMaa, Sporting Clays was a bit crowded yesterday (compared to my last time there) but the high winds kept it interesting…Not a such a great day for High Scores.

Turns out life got in the way of me going. Maybe next weekend...

Hopefully see you then.

A friend just bought a Kreighoff 470 double as I posted elsewhere and we will be doing our monthly Big Bore shoot next Sunday. He will be shooting it with open sights so we will see. My scores improved dramatically when I fitted a 1 moa RMR, so I believe in the things.
