I’ll have just a couple hours in Johannesburg before my outfitter picks me up. Are there any must see shops? I have a few souvenirs to pick up for the kids and I was hoping to buy a couple cigars, good hunting shops are always nice to visit.

There is a shopping mall close to the airport. Very modern, lots of shops

If you are looking for nice gifts I would recommend Cambanos & Son. They have everything from trinkets to goods way out of my price range. It is a bit of a drive (20 minutes), so if interested I would ask your outfitter about stopping by.

My question is why do you have a couple of hours before they pick you up?

Most times the outfitter/PH will be waiting for you as you clear customs unless you are planning on spending the night in Joberg.

Then there is the question of what do you plan to do with your firearms for those couple of hours if you are bringing them?

Amatuli for African souvenirs and trinkets and Melville and Moon for leather and canvas goods is right next door. They are located in Kramerville, a medium taxi ride from the ORT airport. Then go on from there to Safari and Ourdoor in Rivonia Crossing. Then you are right on the highway back to the airport.

We are getting in on Saturday evening, our hunt doesn’t start till Monday. So I asked the outfitter to pick us up at noon on Sunday. I have three small kids and I know that they would love a present from my trip so I figured I would take a couple hours on Sunday morning and buy them something they would like that was native to Africa. Also, you can buy Cuban cigars in America…

You’d better check to see what’s open on Sunday mornings.

Safari Outdoor is open on Sundays from 09h00.
Best bet for cigars is probably at duty free when you leave the baggage area.

The airport actually has quite a few shops in it. Of course you wont see them on your arrival, but you will be pretty surprised when you go to leave. It's worth it if you have a little extra time. Of course be cautious going around Joberg especially with children.

Slightly Off, geographically, but I recall once driving the length of S. Africa S. to N. to Zim and I think passing through a roundabout in either Pretoria or Polokwane after hours we passed a really nice Filson store I believe. 'Would've loved to stop! Perhaps the Africans can weigh in on the Outdoor stores in these locales. I believe there are some out by Sun City in Rustenberg, as well for those going to the Kalihari after Lion! Anytime there's a drive involved, I inquire about same. We can provide nice PH gifts too! ;)

Great point! Out of Africa and many others have really nice stuff. On a long trip years back my Son and I were totally beat so we fell fast asleep on benches (at the time we didn't know there was an SAA Lounge but we enjoyed it on the return trip and many others) and awoke to curio shops on one side and diamonds on the other. Beware of the following trap I fell into just moments after I awoke....LOL Many of the curio shops are jam-packed with goods. Some of them may even be stacked 2M or higher and the aisles are often avg. human width +/- 1 cm. Thus, if you're not awake or not careful, you/your wife/kids WILL knock a pile of these goods over (typically pottery/plates/cups.) So I did it and paid an extra 550 SAR (was $55 USD then, now more like $32!) I offered to pay and all found it quite amusing. It was an expensive "coffee" to wake my sorry ass up! LOL Refrain from any sharp objects or the Agents will (appear to) toss them in the garbage prior to flying out (i.e. porcupine quills, knives, etc.-anything pointy!) but probably bring them home as gifts to the fam or return to the store for partial cred. lol
