Allure of the Ruger No1

I have a 30-06 B model. It is one of my favorites. Very light and a beautiful rifle. Regarding accuracy, you will probably not reach that of a similar bolt gun. My shoots around an inch at 100 yds after a lot of load work and semi-floating the forearm with a rubber washer on the hanger.
I have a small data set, but my experience with the accuracy of the newer No 1’s has been outstanding. Like 1/2 moa outstanding.

A different gunsmith did this one in 1999. He sent his work to an engraver for marking, but I got hold of this one before he sent it off.
Years later I got my local Gunsmith to stamp it.
I asked him to get the "2" into exponential position.
That was not unintentional on this one:

So this one also could use some supplementary laser engraving.

Haha, good to see even the experts are human, with a sense of humor!

One of my local gun shops has an older, gently used, No1 in 6.5x55 Swede, with the full length Mannlicher stock. Would be another cartridge to reload for but I am thinking it might be a great deer/elk/black bear rifle for my daughter. Any thoughts?
I have one built by Mauser in Oberndorf for the Swedish army in 1899. Very mild shooter, accurate and definitely good deer rifle.

You will never regret buying the 300H&H, mine is the "jewel in the crown" of my No1 collection.

Just bought mine. Love how it shoots!

Though it usually sits in my safe while the big sevens and huge thirtys go hunting, my #1 in 338win is more than accurate for 1/4 mile hunting. I decided "why not" after making three consecutive one-shot kills the previous year and getting a great bargain on it years ago. It hasn't been used since I missed a couple simple shots and took a good hit at 550 during my first year with it; I'm not sure if that's because I have buck fever or because the rifle fits a little differently. I spend a lot of time in the field with my Browning 300win, and I also spend some time at my remmy 7stw and remmy 7rum semi customs.

The #1 barrel stamped with .275 Rigby is truly a rifle to grab up when you see one!

I have one. :D I need to post a picture.

Well I pulled out the No.1 Lott from the safe last week. It had sadly been a while. Here are some targets shot from the bench with express sights.

The first session was quite the learning experience. Suspecting that I had previously sighted the rifle lacking decent precision I decided to revisit this. You can see two different points of aim correcting for the high first impact. Starting from essentially zero it was a journey to rebuild a bit of recoil tolerance.

The second session confirmed the high POI and the need for adjustment I corrected the windage at this point as well.

The third session reaffirmed the necessity for a properly contrasting target and also focus. Yes, that's a flinch flyer off left that reminded me not to shoot this gun until I'm physically ready. I took the aggregate impact data and made calculations for sight height adjustment based upon the three sessions. A 17½" sight radius with 4-5" high at 100 yards meant an adjustment of 0.020" to sight height. I ended up changing the rear sight for this.

The last session at 10 yards off the bench. This POA was chosen due to the shoulder profile giving a repeatable aiming point. This is three 400 grain loads and three 500 grain loads fired one after the other pausing only to spot the impacts. The 500's came in slightly lower and tighter with a double impact shared between the two different projectiles.

The allure is renewed.

Forrest, sometimes ye have to bury that front sight a bit in the vee
The 500s seem to be a good grouper for you
Good on you for admitting the flier. Remember Newton’s third law…the harder you yank the trigger the more velocity you’ll get and the deader the critter will be!

Gents - just back from Limpopo with my Ruger No 1 in 450/400 3”. Very challenging hunting conditions (no wind/swirling wind, heavy cover, lots of grass, water everywhere) so it was hard to get on buff. Once we did, busted every time. Came away from a 10 day safari with no buff BUT shot this nice 23” consolation price on the last day at 60 yds with the 370gr CE Safari Raptor. Not a fair fight but the No 1 put it right on the shoulder …

Oh yeah …. And this happened …. Again, 60 yd shot off viper sticks, slightly quartering, one shot from the 370 gr CEB Safari Raptor and he was down after going 30 yds. The Ruger No 1 in 450/400 3” with an 8 oz mercury recoil reducer in the butt stock is one sweet shooting rifle …

Beautiful! Looks like you had quite a memorable time with a classy and capable rifle. I look forward to reading your hunting report if you intend to write one. Good hunting!

Good Morning All!
Just wanted to keep this magnificent thread going with a new member of the family:
Ruger No 1AB in .223 Rem, production 1980, topped with good ol' El Paso Weaver glass!
Hopefully, I'll have some sort of range report for everyone after the weekend.
Regards to all!
Goopy

I'll be putting my No 1 in 458WM up for sale. Cool gun, I always wanted a "Tropical." I ended up finding a 375HH bolt gun that a limited number were made, bought that, and I have make room in the safe as well as put some money back in the bank. I will probably regret selling but we need to upgrade the home and cash is needed.

If anyone has any advance interest, feel free to PM me. I have a pic in my media. As soon as I have time this weekend I'll take better pics and put an official classified post up.

As promised, here is the initial shoot (rushed because of incoming rain):
1st 6: making sure I was on paper
2nd 3: initial tweaking of turrets (all three touching!)
3rd 3: in the blue/bull, rushed the last shot to screw up a good clover
Overall, very happy with a beautiful 40 year old rifle and approximately same age scope. I’m stoked that there is a lot of room to pull in those groups with my own loads as opposed to decades old UMC rounds.
Hell yeah for the #1!
