Advice to only hunt for a couple of meals in Tanzania?

Is bird hunting trips a thing? Does the 7 day minimum apply to that as well?

Basically what you need to realise is what you are asking for in Tanzania is not realistic ,or for any outfitter feasible....this would apply to a few other countries here as well....

Not a practical wish. You can buy a short or a long hunting license as a tourist hunter in Tanzania. The short is usually for 7 to 10 day hunts and the long or full bag license is for up to 21 days. If you buy the license and pay the day fees I'm sure they will let you hunt some birds. But that will be a very costly bird hunt.

Go on your photo safari and try to order some meals featuring some of the wildlife. Enjoy Zanzibar! We stayed at Kendwa Rocks and did day trips from there although it is a fair distance from

The only real option I can think of anywhere close to what you are asking for is to book with a Safari operator in the North for as short and cheap a hunt you can find.... But do so with an operator who also does photo tours. He "may" negotiate a break on the hunt costs of he's making it up on the photo tour. Especially if a operator who is not booked up. Or a slow part of the season.

You are still stuck needing to buy the license to be legal. And you will likely want to rent guns so check that is available. Especially if you want a shotgun. Shot shells are VERY expensive in Tanzania.

Another possibility is to tag along with a friend who is doing a hunt a d you may be able to share the license?

However logistics will be a challenge. Perhaps doable in the North but I haven't been there yet.

Any of the other hunting areas required either a miserable long vehicle treck in and out. Or an expensive charter flight.

Take the advice to go to a Ranch or lodge near Kruger or Ado in RSA to hunt and do a photo safari.

In Tanzania, likely best options are to do a 6 day minimum hunt that costs $30,000 plus in Maasai Land and then tour. Or forgo hunting and do the tours. Be happy, try to order some game meat off a menu.

The 10 days minimum is regulated by govt (TANZANIA WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY)
https://www.tawa.go.tz/hunting-tourism

And yes, northern circuit by far best, Ngorongoro and especially Serengeti. That is were most/many of the wildlife documentaries are from.
The license is required by the government but you are not held hostage and required to hunt all those days. You can leave early if you want. The expense of the license and other fees are cost prohibitive for the OPs situation, however.

Also @DovK0802 your firearms are actually listed on your license in Tanzania well in advance of your hunt so you would have to bring your own firearms. Technically, in Tanzania, it is nearly impossible to borrow or rent firearms in country because you have to show an ownership document for the firearm to use it. Legally, a PH or Outfitter would have to transfer ownership of a firearm to you well ahead of the hunt, which is a lot of trouble to go through.

In addition, sharing a hunting license in Tanzania is not possible. Each hunter must have his own. You can share animal quota but not a hunting license and hunting licenses are very expensive.

In Zambia, you can buy a companion license, that allows you to share animal quota for only $650.

As others have mentioned, South Africa is likely the only place where a person could do a cheaper 3-day hunt.

I like your plan but would tweak it a bit. Go see the migration with the other tourists and fill your heart mind, soul and a photo book with memories. Then go visit Vic falls on your way to South Africa or namibia. Find a ph that will help you shoot cool guinees and francolin and doves and sand grouse and such and while you are staying in that ph camp, eat what he offers in addition to your birds. Try the local beverages, they will have a good selection. Tell them you want to eat kudu or eland or zebra or whatever and enjoy the atmosphere and the nightly campfire. Rent a gun from that ph. They might even be able to conjure up a couple days wherein you could hunt a warthog or impala, blesbok or somethin. More photos. There are many ph’s that could handle this easily. Times of the year might be tricky, matching up the birds and the migration. Visiting multiple countries once you are on the continent is not so hard and the expense of travel is the airfare over the ocean getting there and back.
Pm me if you want some names for ph’s that hunt birds, I have several names selected. But for giggles reach out to Henry griffiths safaris who is a sponsor on here and just ask if and what he could do for you. That’s just one example of many available.
No meat goes to waste in Africa!

What does a 7 day license cost?

I have to correct myself. A 10 day license is the minimum. But you dont have to hunt a full 10 days. Some Safari companies will offer a 7 day hunt on the 10 day license

What does a 7 day license cost?
Not sure but it’s thousands.

Likely irrelevant due to firearms laws in Tanzania - see my edited post above.

Thank you for the clarification

This….

Ask the tour operator to get some local game for you to try.

Enjoy your trip.

Generally 10d, 1 person, room, board, license around $25k.

Also, most cooks want the game to age a couple of days before you eat it.

I just checked his web site.
How much would be the cost of bird shooting license in tanzania?

You’ve gotten a lot of good information so far. Tanzania is an expensive place to try a very short hunt. I suggest you at least contact Mubarek Atik of Eshkesh Safaris to discuss a short hunt. He advertises here and I know him from personal experience to be a good guy. While it’ll still cost you Tanzania type money, he can get creative. He also has a nice stable of rental rifles you can use. I almost put together such a hunt with him last February but family obligations prevented it from coming together. I was going to hunt 5 days on longer license.

If you’re a fisherman, consider spending a couple days saltwater fishing Instead. I’ve fished out of Dar Es Salaam and also Watamu on the Kenya side. Both locations have good fishing but a few days at Watamu and offshore fishing makes for an excellent time. Five species of billfish plus Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi and Wahoo. Your wife would also love Watamu. It’s super easy to get to from Kilimanjaro. Let me know if you need help and I can connect you with some great people for fishing.

For your requirements. I would stay in a few of the luxury tent lodges inside of Kruger park. You can book through many suggested travel agents here.

Or go with a hunting outfit and they can be your tour guide. We added 2 days, after our 12 day hunt, and went inside the park.

Our PH booked the lodging and set the itinerary. We stayed in two different lodges. Traveling from one to the next, inside the park with his company van.

I could give you my reference if you like. Or I’m sure sponsors here could do the same thing. Pickup from Joberg, travel to their lodge. Eat preferred wild game. Then on to Kruger

Doing your own thing instead of being herded like cattle and tourists was very relaxing. And the PH knows more about those animals than a cheesy group tour guide also.

Thanks all for all the great advice, even if my dreams are crushed ; ) Will have to add a real Africa hunt trip to the list.
Happy new year!
How long is your total trip?

I'd strongly suggest a short flight to another country or area. Take your wife to Victoria Falls. You can easily do a couple days of wing shooting and hunt some zebra or impala while there. Take her to Cape Town, Kruger, Ado or something in South Africa and you can do the same in 2 days.

If those are viable options shoot me a PM and I can give you names of a couple outfitters who could help provide something like that. You could easily do it on the front or back end of the trip and return home from that country. RSA would make it extremely easy.

Jeez the guy is going to view the migration....he ain't going to go game viewing sa or wherever....its a serious spectacle to be involved in....having seen it ..being involved hunting in the middle of it all ....why can't people stop coming up with alternatives that have no relevance to his main trip.....simple fact if he sees the migration he will have an amazing experience....but the hunt side is just not feasible....simple.....not being funny but people on here come out with some serious shit sometimes....just jaunt to Vic falls...go to some place in sa....he isn't going to be anywhere near those places....fk me

Ha ha ha. Hear hear! There are so many derailed threads and sideshows/pet tangents/superfluous topics that make a lot of threads very hard to follow.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
