a brand spanking new naval aviator

I spent 20 years in Naval Aviation. Here is hoping your son does well in the RAG and gets a good assignment he likes.

He could always transition to P-8's later.

I was in EA-6B's, SH-60B's and then the good life P-3's.

Patrol Navy is the best kind of Naval Aviation to be in. Maybe not as glamorous as Strike, but there is nothing like a 10,000 foot runway and a cold beer at the end of a day.

Congratulations.

Glad to have him protecting us for years to come.

Spent a lot of time in P-3's deployed to Afghanistan, Djibouti, and Iraq without per-diem. Never got a "money detachment'.

bummer dude.

how much runway does a P-3 need? I'm guessing a P-8 needs a bit longer of a roll out, and fairly free of FOD

Sgt Zim, pls tell your son congratulations!! Seems like just yesterday I received my Gold Wings in Pensacola...on Friday the 13th, April '73. Friday the 13th has been my lucky day since!! Chose helos and never looked back. After 31 year career in the Marines, I managed to get behind the controls of just about everything in the inventory, rotary and fixed wing. Never intended it to be a career, was just having too much fun. He's going to have a blast!! It's a serious business but well worth it. Very proud of him.

I was in the Aires in two squadrons that have since been disestblished they are really heavy, so the normal 8000 requirement that C-130's and P-3's have is really 10,000.

Didn't help in Afghanistan when my skipper decided to destroy one in a mine field at the end of the runway.

I was standing outside watching the fireball, thankful that I was not a IFT "windowlicker" on that flight.

Everyone walked away from it, so hard to complain. But had just picked it up at the contractor for new parts (complete refit) a week prior.
