a brand spanking new naval aviator

Congrats to you both. After a year of chaos, it's heartening to see some good news. From this chair, please pass on "Thanks for your service".

congratulations to you and please pass on congratulations to him!
We are truly the land of the free because of the brave!!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to you and your son. I can remember when my flight suit fit like that. I spent most of my flight time in the A and C models of the helo shown.
are the trannies on the A and C models as godawful as the ones on the Navy's TH-57s?

Welcome from one veteran to another. Welcome to an ever shrinking fraternity of veterans who pledge their life to defending a way of life that most will never understand the importance of.
@MS9x56
My grandfather was in WW1 and had his 18th on Gallipoli, wia x2 on the western front, then in WW11 for the duration plus a stint in the U.S.N then back to Australian army, father in services for 30 years with 3 years in Korea, myself in army no active service and son in the Australian navy.
Service personnel do the shit jobs no one else wants to do.

I have noticed selfless service does seem to run deep in some families. We should all be thankful for this.

Congratulations to both, that is the generation we need! Thank you to both! We Air Force guys promise not to make too much fun of his mustache. LOL. :)

I am inclined to believe it is less about sacrifice than it is about valuing certain things and principles above one's own life, and there is certainly a familial component to it, whether learned or genetic or both, it does run strong.

If I value my own life more than I value principles, and I give up my life, I have sacrificed (I suspect there are very few men who've ever taken this route). If OTOH I value principles above my own life, then it is no sacrifice at all for me to die for those principles. And thus my death was in observance of my highest ideals. That's actually selfish (as in self-interested).

I kind of think that's the essence of General Patton's statement: "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the dead. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived."

A very heartfelt congratulations to you and your son. Back when I was a kid I always wanted to be an air force fighter pilot but it never came to pass. I won't bore you with the details but I ended up spending 21 years active duty as an enlisted Marine. Now that I have the luxury of hindsight and a few decades of adult experience if I had to do it all over again I would make a whole bunch of different life choices and do everything within my power and ability to earn my Wings of Gold and become a Marine Corps pilot. It's a very exclusive, honorable and worthy cadre of men and woman that your son is now a member of. I'm envious in a good way for your son's good fortune and achievement. Once again, congratulations to you both.

Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
