9.3 x 62 Opinions

:S Welcome:

The X62 has long had popularity and kudos in Europe and Afrcia, it's just that the US has taken so long to recognise its worth. Just read the number of AH members who approve of it. no super velocities, or special bullets, just a well-established performer in the game fields. An interesting point is that the original bullet weight is "so right" for it; well done Mr Bock. Give it time...

Herr Bock definitely knew what he was doing and with modern components it just gets better!

Welcome to AH. After hearing so many accolades on this site, when I recently purchased a Blaser R8, the 9.3x62 was the first barrel. Although I have yet to shoot anything but paper with it, I have confidence it will perform as advertised.
For moose, you should have a winner. When you get to Africa, with the right bullet, any PG within 250+ yds should be in the salt.
Have you looked at the Sauer 100XT. That was originally my choice in that round, but decided to put that $$$ toward a Blaser.

I have a great 9.3 listed for sale

Thanks...I'm looking it over.

hi duke,

i think your choice of a 9.3x62 is a good one.

options i would consider are:
a. buy a 3006 and get it rebarreled
b. buy a 3006 and maybe get JES rebore to rebore the barrel on the rifle
c. buy a 8x7 and get the above options a/b done to it.

of course the easiest is to buy an 9.3x62 (with sights) sights can be added later if needed (i bought a 9.3x62 ruger m77 without sights and had them added) but a doner rifle can be purchased and improved to where you like it and keep you under 2500$ i suspect. keep in mind, custom rifles are almost never worth the money that was put into them.

another thought is just put WTB 9.3x62 on classifieds on this forum, you might find a seller.

good luck with your project.
I have had the same issues as the original poster and found one of the options above to be the best alternative. If you look around a little bit you can find a Interarms Mark X or FN rifle and get them converted and be out the door for easily less than $1000.

I just got back from a bison shoot. I used my bow on one and my CZ550 American in 9.3x62 on two. I was just shooting meat animals around 800 lbs. I'm loading IMR 4350 in Lapua brass with win LR primers and 270 gr Speer Hot Cor bullets. My muzzle velocity is approx 2500 fps give or take a fps or two either way. Both shots were taken on broad side animals between 110 and 130 yards. Both animals were cleanly taken with one shot behind the shoulder. Meat damage was almost non existant. Just a little around the hole was it. A friend with a .338 win mag took one and it looked like he threw a gernade in it's shoulder. If a good meat getter is what you want by all means get a 9.3x62. I would not hesitate to hunt any thing on this continent with it loaded with appropriate bullets for the game being hunted. If I were going after a bull over 1000 lbs or so I would load a 286 TSX or Partition. When firing from the bench recoil is managable. When firing from standing recoil is not bad at all.
It has by far become my favorite rifle.

The ruger is a little overpriced but the current market they are getting higher prices. The M70 Renner is priced very fairly. The 9.3x62 is my favorite mid bore. The Sauer, tikka, are both nice rifles on the lower end of the price scale. Rigby Highlander is on the upper end of the factory price scale. On a custom you can build one on most any action that has a 30/06 length action and bolt face.

Best wishes on your quest.
I must confess to cutting corners on this type African rifle and just using an inherited Ruger 77 chambered in .338 Win Mag. Seven African animals with one shot kills plus a trophy elk that was departing at 110+ YARDS.

Duke1966, the 9.3 x 62 is a great caliber. While looking for something in that caliber range several years ago, I decided on a 35 Whelen instead. Like mdwest said the two are ballistic twins. The 35 Whelen is based on a 30-06 case and can easily be obtained with a barrel swap. Remington only produced their bolt actioned Mod. 700 in the 35 Whelen one year. That being 1988. I had an 03-A3 that had been cobbled up by a jerk that I paid almost nothing for and had a gunsmith replace the barrel. Replacement stocks are available from a number of sources. I got mine from Boyds.

I'd suggest that you "cool your jets" and just keep your eyes open for either a donor rifle and or someone looking to sell a 9.3 x 62. It may take a while, but a good rifle can be had for about half of the price you are looking at.

There was a consigned Ruger Hawkeye in 9.3x62 used at a local shop recently for substantially less than the prices you noted. It had a mostly plain stock with the ebony (I assume) forend tip. It was a lot more handy than the Ruger RSM rifles which always seemed a bit heavy to me. It sat for months and the owner finally came and picked it up.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
