Hi,

I have not seen differences in the behavior on game between round nose vs spitzer bullets of the same construction. Having said this, neither I saw big differences in trayectory until 300 meters or so, between round nose or semi spitzer vs normal spitzer ones.

Bob I like the 175 Gr RN too. And like you I have been using these "retro" bullets for similar reasons, I also have to admit I just like the way they look and the fact that most younger hunters don't consider them a reasonable choice. Poor retained velocity and ballistic coefficient compared to sleeker pointed bullets. But tradition and experience says they're good!

Yip. The reason I use Stewart Bonded bullets or Woodleigh RNs in my Mod21. The Stewarts are still from the days Ken was alive and made them

@Longwalker
At the ranges I like to hunt, usually 200 or less yards I love the round nose. Fortunately my Whelen doesn't care what I feed it so if the range is longer I can easily slip a pointed bullet in for longer shots snd still know where its going.
Nowdays the mag is usually loaded with 225gn or 250gn round nose with a few pointy thingy bullets in the pocket just in case.
If needed I would have no issues out to 300 with the round nose tho.

@Clodo Ferreira
The big oryx bull I shot with a 35 cal 250gr hornaday round nose you could see his whole body shudder and ripple at the hit.
My PH had never seen a reaction like that on game before and neither had I and he has seen a lot of game shot with different calibers and projectiles.
That old cup and core round nose started at 2,700fps sure rocked his boat and put a golf ball size hole on the other side.

I am going to see what my rifle likes as far as 175gr RNs. They are what i would like to use for black bear, up close and personal (<50yds). Find a good load for 162 A-max for longer shots on deer, and maybe moose as well. Many have fallen to the 6.5x55. Moose are easy to kill, but hard to convince they're dead. I may step up to 175s for them.

Sound wisdom!

My first choice would always be Woodleigh, and the Stewart bonded RNs I have. I’m lucky to have 300 odd Woodleighs and probably 500 or so Stewarts, still made by Ken when he was alive. They will last me a lifetime.

If you can not find Woodleigh 7mm 175gr after the factory burnt down I would seriously consider Safari Bullet Compony round noses. They have a solid shank and a bonded front half, just like the North Forks used to have.

In this day and age where everyone chases BC, round noses have almost become extinct.

These are examples of Safari Bullet Comp bullets, although in bigger calibers. Contact Rudi Fisher, aka @458Express on the forum for them, as he owns the company and makes them.

No need to molest the bolt handle. In fact the factory already changed the bolt handle to accommodate a telescope when they went to a receiver with integral dovetails. See pictures below.

The top rifle is pre 1948 and serial number 23000
The middle rifle is post 1948, like yours. Notice the difference in bolt handle.
Bottom rifle is a ZG 47
The last Mod22s had a bolt handle and knob like the ZG47.

All makes of rings compatible with a CZ550, in other words 19mm dovetails, are also compatible with the Brno Mod 21/22 and ZG 47.

Here is my 6,5x57 with Warne mounts and a Swarovski Habicht 3-9x36. Prior to that it had a Zeiss 6x32 on.

The last Mod 22s had the same bolt handle as the ZG47, just as production moved over from the small ring Mod21/22 to the large ring ZG.

Again I used Talley mounts on this 8x60S, that I should never have sold, with a vintage Swarovski Habicht 6x42.

A last word of caution. You might find a fine vintage scope that will work well, but with a 26mm tube, instead of a 25mm tube. Morris from Alaska Arms can make 26mm rings for you, and speaking under correction I believe Talley as well. Otherwise a machine shop needs to ream a standard set of 25mm mounts out to 26mm for you, which might be cost prohibitive.
Nice!!!!!

Here is an advertisement, although in Afrikaans, selling 50x new PMP cases for R1000 or $51. They are not in the class of Norma or Lapua, but perfect for a normal hunting rifle and probably in the class of Winchester, R-P or PPU. Better than Sellior and Bellot. Plenty different 7x57 cases doing the rounds in RSA.

Well, i was able to find a scope. Zeiss Diavari-c 3-9x36, but am unable to find rings that give the needed bolt clearance. There is a very limited selection at the dealers near me and i hesitate to order online if i"m not sure i am getting the right ones. Any suggestions welcome.

Congratulations. That is a lovely scope. Warne or Talley mediums will have you covered. Morris at Alaska Arms is incredibly knowledgeable, and a call to him will also set you on the right path.

You can sell it to me !

I loaded 160 gr Swift A Frames and 175 gr Nosler Partition.

The 160s are 2550 fps and the 175s are 2460 fps. I used Ramshot Big Game, because I had it on hand. Worked out well. Low SD and ES and group very well and similar enough POI for both bullets.

I have to come up with an excuse to try the 175 partitions out on something.... ;) :D Beers:

Ya know guy's i'm starting to think we're talking 2 different guns. Couldn,t source Warne or Talley, so tried Burris medium so unless the Warne are waaaaaaay higher they won't be even close to fitting.

Did you get the sight snugged up on your rifle?
