According to my research, Alaska arms can offer no help, nor Talley or Warne. The trick is to find the right scope. As far as modifying the bolt handle, the rifle is in pristine condition and i can't bring myself to change a thing

on it. It has lasted, unaltered, this long, i will not be the one to change it.

No need to molest the bolt handle. In fact the factory already changed the bolt handle to accommodate a telescope when they went to a receiver with integral dovetails. See pictures below.

The top rifle is pre 1948 and serial number 23000
The middle rifle is post 1948, like yours. Notice the difference in bolt handle.
Bottom rifle is a ZG 47
The last Mod22s had a bolt handle and knob like the ZG47.

All makes of rings compatible with a CZ550, in other words 19mm dovetails, are also compatible with the Brno Mod 21/22 and ZG 47.

Here is my 6,5x57 with Warne mounts and a Swarovski Habicht 3-9x36. Prior to that it had a Zeiss 6x32 on.

The last Mod 22s had the same bolt handle as the ZG47, just as production moved over from the small ring Mod21/22 to the large ring ZG.

Again I used Talley mounts on this 8x60S, that I should never have sold, with a vintage Swarovski Habicht 6x42.

A last word of caution. You might find a fine vintage scope that will work well, but with a 26mm tube, instead of a 25mm tube. Morris from Alaska Arms can make 26mm rings for you, and speaking under correction I believe Talley as well. Otherwise a machine shop needs to ream a standard set of 25mm mounts out to 26mm for you, which might be cost prohibitive.

Hi Dewald,

Agree 100% ! I have seen these BRNO made with round tops, prior the introduction of the integral 19 mm dovetails common to all BRNO/CZ until now. Even without the bolt guide. They have a wider curved bolt handle than the last ones. Anyway, are you sure if the flat root of the handle in the rifles of your pictures are factory originals?
About the reaming of rings from 25,4 mm (1") to 26 mm, at least here, is a work not too expensive. I have 3 rings, all WARNEs 2 of the Premier model, machined, for their own bases of that model, and one of the current ones made for Weaver type bases.
Good luck Earle!

Yip they are original. I’ve owned a stupid amount of them and looked at even more, and can assure you all four rifles in the pictures are 100% factory original

For a long time, I extensively made use of the (now unfortunately discontinued) 175Gr Winchester Super X soft point for the 7x57mm Mauser.

It served me extremely well, achieving a chronographed velocity of 2443 fps out of the 23” barrel of my Churchill Gunmakers Model Deluxe (which was appreciably close to the advertised velocity of 2450 fps).

In recent years, I had Hendershots Custom Ammunition load me up 100 cartridges using Winchester cases and 175Gr Hornady Interlock bullets (they fortunately had some of the old discontinued round nosed variety in stock, so I opted for this style of bullet over the currently manufactured Hornady Interlock Spire Point bullet).

Q: Why are all the deer lying there dead (one is rotting w/ flies around it!-you can see the exposed ribcage!) 'Looks like one of my jobsites where teflon ingredients were spilled into waterways!!!

It was during a culling programme, C.W. Unfortunately, the team assigned to recover the carcasses during that particular culling program were less than competent.

i see the crops in the background, so i surmised it was for that purpose. i live in a big agricultural area so they do issue wildlife damage permits (or extra tags for the farmers to hand out to people that have permission to hunt their lands.) it just looks like they let them lay overnight (or maybe found a kill the next day and some predators got to it!) Thank you for the explanation. the observant hunter was curious to know!

I always try to treat my employees with utmost respect. But they committed a grave sin on that day, through their ineptness.

I absolutely disgust wastage and all that venison was supposed to be distributed to the local communities. I should have stayed there longer and supervised everything. But instead I took my share (by Department of Forests policy, the culler is permitted to keep one head of big game per culling programme for his personal consumption) and left after contacting the R.T (Recovery Team) via wireless. I deeply regret it, now.

If you let the locals know when this is (or was) going to occur, you'd have no problems with them showing up to take care of the meat! ;) Such a happy time in Africa seeing all the smiling locals helping to process the big game and taking their share home to feed the village! :)

All i need now is some brass, seems to be like hens teeth hereabouts, and the scope. Made a lucky strike and sourced 1000 Hornady 162gr A-max bullets for pennies on the dollar, so keeping my fingers crossed that the rifle likes them.

The rifle will certainly like then given the 1:9” twist. I’m surprised that cases are hens teeth, but if push comes to shove you can form cases from 6,5x57 or 8x57 simply with the sizing die. Then there are the tedious methods of trimming down .270 brass to 57mm and annealing and forming, but that is a last resort.

Almost every gunshop worth it’s salt in SA has 7x57 brass. DHL to you should be R690 or $37, and takes about four working days. If you really can not come right I will be happy to send some over to you.

Thank you. I may take you up on that offer. I will give it a little more time, as i won'

t have the bullets for another week and am now haggling over a scope.

Earle I have enough brass and bullets for my Brno 7x57 that I can share. Just let me know in a private message what you need and I'll dig in my stash. I currently have a Leupold compact 2.5x mounted in original BRNO skeleton QD mount which was adapted to fit Leupold 1" Med. rings on my Brno 22F. The flat bolt handle, unmodified clears this arrangement nicely. I also have another Leupold compact 3-9x in set of talley rings that fits just fine. The Leupolds are discontinued scopes, but still show up in the Canadian used market. Old Burris "Mini" 3-9x with adjustable objective will also work. All other scopes that I tried had such large ocular bells that they required very high rings.

Just got myself a sweet little Brno carbine in 7x57. I want to use it for this fall's black bear hunt. Looking for recommendations for bullet selection. I do handload. Shots are typically 50yds or less. Rarely over 100. What will dump the most energy inside those ranges? Thots appreciated.
@Earle
The good old 175gn round nose will be very effective for your needs. The old round nose dumps energy well and gives good penetration.
Just my humble opinion.

@Hunter Habib
After using round noses in my 35 Whelen I have come to love the authority and penetration they provide. Game seems to give a more dramatic indication of being hit with a round nose than a spitzer in my humble opinion.
I'm now a convert for round nose for bigger game.
Bob

Bob I like the 175 Gr RN too. And like you I have been using these "retro" bullets for similar reasons, I also have to admit I just like the way they look and the fact that most younger hunters don't consider them a reasonable choice. Poor retained velocity and ballistic coefficient compared to sleeker pointed bullets. But tradition and experience says they're good!

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
