500 Jeffery Shooting Thread

This was me with a mate's 500. Lost over 50lb since.

Nice fireballl @DWB (y)

Here's my contribution.

Not sure what that untidy feeding on the second round was all about

These plinking loads are on the mild side, ~5750 ft lbs - but deliver good accuracy.

Target is at 25 m, offhand, shooting 'quick' pairs.

That's really nice .. many thanks.

I'm awaiting daylight .. we'll give the Kynoch's a shot here shortly.

been up all night, why not.

I didn't notice that much difference. However, the lighter bullets & Kynoch do have a bit more energy.

600grn, Norma 570, Norma 540, Kynoch.

I threw a box of clays with the coach again .. I've never felt a 3" that stout.

600 grain Woodleighs at 2200fps. Have zeroed a scope for this rifle now as well so I have the option of the red dot and a scope.

Geez there seems to be a lot of Blaser R8 500 Jeffery rifles in Australia.
I to have a R8 PH.
I went for the super low Henneberger four foot mount, with a Docter 3 on it. It gives me much better cheek weld, than with a standard mount and red dot. I also have settled on the 600 grain Woodleigh. Bloody fantastic combination.

Last time I hunted birds was in NZ and I used a borrowed Beretta 300….I tried some 3” shells in it, can’t recall the brand or the exact velocity.

Anyway, very stout, actually uncomfortable to use. IMO much worse than shooting my Sako 85 in 500J.

Right, so here goes. First time rapid fire test with my new custom 500 Jeffery.

The bolt is extremely smooth, however if I cycle in my shoulder I am pressing it into something that causes it to stick a bit, but I will sort that out.

Feeds very well:

Looks good to me! More photos of the rifle please

Ok, so I had the first opportunity to use the 500 Jeffery at a BASA (Big Bore Association of Southern Africa) shoot yesterday. It operated flawlessly.

Feeling a little sore but satisfied today. Ranges all together were 18 shots.

Here's a video of 2 of the ranges.

Nice shooting.

Here is visible why I stopped doing the BASA shoots.....as I believe the wrong muscle memory is being worked into the use of the rifle.

I quess if someone has a 500 Jeff for fun it is different but if it is used in the field for hunting and backup it is different....

1. If your rifle takes 2, 3 or 4 that is how you should start everytime.
2. Nowhere in the hunt will you be taking a rifle off a table.
3. Reloading on the run is how it happens in the field not once you get to where you decide to take a follow up shot(maybe this was your choice or maybe you where told to only reload when you got there).
4. In this cenario(if your rifle was empty) I would have loaded 1 only so I could get another backup shot into the departing elephant asap not load 2 as the oportunity would have been lost.

I can carry on but I think it can be seen where I am coming from.....

So if I was allowed to start as I would in the field.

1. I would have started with 4 up.
2. 2 shots on first target.
3. 1 shot on departing elephant leaving 1 in mag.
4. Reload on the run so I would have 2 shots availible when I get to the tyre instead of having to reload 2 when I get there......

These shoots are great and are definately good excercise but need to accommodate more realisticly in field use of the rifle instead of what is decided by someone.

Shooting and reloading etc should be the same for all irrespective of double or bolt.

No double could beat a bolt in the first one on the elephant if I started with 4 as the double guy would have to reload twice and the bolt guy only once on the run.......

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl

Hey Steve, This is Steve Washington we met at KMG last year. I am interested in your Winchester. Would love to speak with you about it. I work third shift and I cannot take a phone with me to work. Let me know a good time to call during one of your mornings. My phone is [redacted]. Live in Florida so I have to account for the time difference.
Look forward to hearing from you.
