460 Weatherby opinions?

The first time I shot the cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum was with a rifle from Weatherby, but I also did not want to buy one. I own an old Brevex rifle of this caliber.

@Axle2010
I WANTED A 460 WBY for long 30 years. But I wanted it in CRF. WETHERBY did not make them in CRF. But still wanted 460 Rigby. For me it is a WANT ONE not a need one. I am not recoil shy.
If you want one and can offord it Then Get One. You can always load it down to 23 or 2400 feet/second or even lower till you get comfortable.
Here are some pictures of 460 wby CRF CAustome built I got from AH Member @tarbe
Have fun

Krish that is GORGEOUS! What are those build specs of you don't mind my asking?

I’d like a 378, 416 and 460 but no way I’d run them full tilt.
Build on a Brno 602 or CZ550 and you’ve got a good platform.

A good platform for shoulder replacement surgery and retinal detachment.

Why have a WBY cartridge and not load it to full capacity? Wouldn’t it be easier to just have a 375H&H, 416RM/RIGBY and 458LOTT/WM?

Heavy for caliber bullets with plenty of space for powder and low pressure :)

You don't buy a rifle caliber 460 Weatherby Magnum and then downgrade it to the 458 Winchester Magnum level. Sure, you don't need to load it like the original Weatherby loads, but you should still take advantage of the potential of this cartridge, which is far beyond that of cartridges like the 458 Lott, let alone 458 Winchester Magnum. The cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum allows shots comparable to those of a cartridge 375 H&H Magnum, meaning when it comes to shooting at longer distances, something that can be forgotten with other cartridges of the same caliber. Sure, some will say you don't need something like that, but after 30 years my experience has shown me that at times such shots at longer distance are also necessary. I read the same comments when it comes to the cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum for more than 50 years. One could try updating all the comments a bit in the meantime.

My father had a 460 Wby. Magnum.
All we had was factory ammo and it was atrocious to shoot - almost as atrocious as it was to look at!!

That said, isn't the darling of the modern DG cartridges these days the 450 Rigby?
Isn't the Rigby a beltless downloaded Weatherby as much as it is a necked up 416 Rigby?

Correct on all accounts. And it’s what I mean when I talk about downloading the .450 weatherby. Dunno why people thought I meant win mag levels *shrugs*
Although I do like the look of these Weatherby’s (except that front sight that all American custom makes insist on using that looks silly):

Go to Google. Look for Noreen custom 460 wetherby. It tells all about this rifle. It was built by Norren action, famous stock maker and famous engraver. I think this was the only 460 wetherby they built together. One of a kind.
Hope this answers your question.
NOREEN may be able to build you one as they have all the specs and prints for this.

I don't know how you load your cartridges 500 Jeffery or 505 Gibbs, but my rifle caliber 500 Schüler has more recoil with a 535gr bullet that leaves the barrel at 2400 fps than my rifle caliber 460 Weatherby Magnum with a 500 gr bullet that leaves the barrel at 2500 fps. Maybe it's because of the different rifles, but despite it, I don't think that this recommendation is very good. I switched directly from a rifle caliber 9,3x64 to a rifle caliber 460 Weatherby Magnum. Sure, It was not that easy at the beginning and required a lot of training, but unfortunately there were no opportunities to test anything else at the time. The best way to prepare for shooting a rifle caliber 460 Weatherby Magnum is to train first with a rifle caliber 416 or similar and not with a rifle caliber 500 Jeffery, 505 Gibbs or 577 Nitro Express.

My CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery, with a 570g bullet at 2510 fps recoil is a bit sporty. Tame it down to 2300 fps it's but a maiden's kiss :)

One thing you can say about Roy Weatherby is that the products he made were unique. The shape of the stock was not pleasing to my eye, but I'm also in agreement about the hooded front sight.

I like the older Weatherby calibers. I have a pretty light (7 1/2 lbs with scope and rings) Rem XCR II I had rechambered to 375 Weatherby. It's awesome. I also have an older (Japanese) Mark V in 270 Weatherby which shoots light out. I don't mind the stock design of the 270 Weatherby Mark V but it is very heavy for the amount of recoil it generates.

Does anyone have reloaded the .460 Weatherby magnum with 600 gr bullets ?
I tried them in my .458 Lott but this weight is too heavy for that caliber which doesn't have enough case capacity to push them at a decent velocity ! I was able to get only 1939 f/ and the bullet (Degol Starkmantel) didn't expand at all in water jugs. It went through 7 water jugs and finished in the ground very deep where I was not able to recover it.
I have a friend who own a .460 Weatherby magnum, an old Japanese Mark V, and he likes it. He used to shoot factory ammunition loaded with Barnes TSX 450 gr and was happy with them. But ammunition in this caliber are now very expensive. That's why reloading comes in our mind and why not with these heavy weight bullets ?

The 460 WbyMag was my training wheels for more powerful rifles, as well as more efficient rifles like the .458 Winchester Magnum.
I owned two 460 WbyMag rifles, one a factory rifle, a shiny pushfeed Mark V that that just never could extend my pinky finger, had little redeeming social value.
The other was a "custom" on a BBK-02 action.
It was a big bore, so its barrel got bobbed at the breech and turned into my wildcat .458/.338 Lapua Magnum Unimproved.
The stock and BBK-02 action got turned into Dave Estergaard's wildcat, the 470 Mbogo.
Plenty redeeming social value and capable of the hottest 460 WbyMag ballistics with ease.
Then I necked it up for two more rifles on CZ 550 Magnum actions.
The .500 Mbogo is more still.

Note "4+1" instead of "2+1" for the Mark V training wheels.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
