458 Lott rifle build

Not sure where you did up all these beautiful pictures, but they are nice to look at. This one looks like it weighs a TON!
Sorry about that .. I was looking for Domestic .500 possibilities years ago I came across them. "MNR's For Sale Page" also had a few Ryan Breeding Builds For Sale.

That is a 585
A 20" .500, etc.

With the complete understanding that "more is better"...why is it soooo important to go from 3 down to 4 or 5? Wouldn't it be more important to keep the rifle slim and lively to be able to make those quick shots everyone talks about? Isn't this why everyone has ammo carriers and ammo belts to reload from?

Do people truly believe they can shoot (accurately) and cycle the action, in a stressful situation, more than 3 time (accounting for the 3 down & 1 in the tube) and still have time to do anything before a buffalo closes the distance?

Time for some math...

Shot to shot is about 1.5 with a DG caliber rifle. So 4 shots gives a total of 4.5 seconds, only accounting for the time between shots to cycle the action, aim and shoot. A cape buffalo can run at speeds up to 37 miles/hour or 54 feet/second.

So call it 250 feet (84 yards) can be covered in the time it takes to shoot 4 rounds. Do you truly believe you will have time to even take that 5th or 6th shot?
You are probably right about it not being needed very often. I have a CZ and it will hold 5 down and 6 if you really wiggle the top round in. I usually carry it with 5 rounds because I do not want to fiddle around getting that 6 th round in and out several times a day and I am not confident that feeding will be perfect. I filmed a hunt where I think 13 shots were fired at a buffalo. Not all at once, there were pauses where everyone was able to reload but 2 PH's and the client fired. Personal opinion-most times you will be able to reload. However, sometime you just have a patch of black belonging to a wounded buffalo, hidden in the bush. So you shoot to put lead into him-maybe a couple and then he runs towards you or away. In that situation I would be very happy with 5 rounds in the rifle. And my CZ is a big beast anyway- not really a slim speedy wand but it suits me.

More important that you are comfortable with your rifle and shoot it well with 3+1 vs being uncomfortable and out of practice with 5 or 6+1.

Do your job as a client hunter and place that first shot well. Then all this talk is a moot point.

Until you put 3 well placed shots in him and no one told him he is supposed to die. He just keeps coming for more. Does it happen like this all the time? No. It happened to me my first time and that is all the proof I need to step up from a 416REM to a 458Lott. It is a crazy experience when animal doesn't go down and you are pouring the coal to him.

My nephew shot his and the bull didn’t run away. They had good wind and cover. He just kept looking for them. 5 shots later he just sank . It sometimes takes a while before they learn they are dead. I’ve taken 3 and from now on it will be 458 Lott at least.

My mind and my wallet have been made. Im comfortable with 3+1 and the bottom metal I have to complete this rifle with an AI stock. Thanks for all y’all’s input.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
