That’s why my Lott holds 5 down.The intention of this rifle has more and bigger than buff in its future.
I could have bought an extended magazine bottom metal (1+4) for my 404 build on Mauser 98. But that would have required a custom stock. Also, I figure if I can't put some poor buffalo down with four shots, I probably deserve to be stomped. Anyway, my PH is always backing me up with a bigger gun ... and a whole lot of experience. I have a better chance of being run over by a drunk in a Walmart parking lot.Fair enough. If nothing else, it would increase the potential resale value of your rifle. Just didn't want you breaking the bank looking for minimal gains.
I’m having to go the custom stock route anyway with this action. Nothing really off the shelf for a Dakota action. I was going to use an Echols Legend but a classic looking wooden stock is the current plan. An upgrade in bottom metal isn’t really going to add that much to the cost of the build at this stage.I could have bought an extended magazine bottom metal (1+4) for my 404 build on Mauser 98. Understood. Yes, extended bottom metal isn't a huge jump in cost outlay. For me the custom stock was a deal breaker. It was important that I do as much of the work as possible to make it "my gun build." The only thing I couldn't do was attach the new barrel and open the bolt face. Everything else was my work: Timney trigger, re-engineered FN rail to fit BRNO military receiver, Warne QD rings, mated new 416 Rem magnum bottom metal to standard Mauser receiver, extended the loading ramp, reshaped rails to load thicker 404 cartridges, reshaped the extractor to load and snap over on wider rimmed 404, fit action and barrels to semi-inleted stock, mounted the recoil pad, bedded the action, installed 3-position side safety. The specialized tools I used were horizontal drill press (Shopsmith), Dremel tool, and recoil pad. jig. Not sure how much work you intend to do but I would encourage everyone to put their oar into it as much as possible, especially if the intention is to keep the gun. Good suggestion. And I’ve been down that road. That’s how I acquired the action from a connection that works there. New-old stock that parkwest wasn’t going to build. They wouldve stocked it but at their new going rates…plus I wanted to do more myself as well.I would get ahold of Parkwest Arms. From my understanding they acquired the Dakota rights/stuff and are building them. They should be able to provide you with a, what was Dakota drop magazine and might even stock it for you. Their prices are more than Dakotas was but what isn’t now.
Yeah, never heard of a buffalo being shot more than 3or 4 times.
There's high end Makers that build 500/505 & 585's to Hold 5. Regardless of "why", if a Drop Box takes that Massive Swelling away in the Stock (around the Magazine)? .. Please do ;

My 505 and 500j hold 3 down with enough room to get one under the extractor. I would love 4 downFeatured Rifles Projects Nampa Id | Ryan Breeding Rifles

Shot mine 9 times... the first 3 were money. Then it was trying to anchor him. Had only hear stories like that, alway chocked it up to bad bullet placement. That was with a 416REM and 400gr AFrames, I'm now shooting a 458Lott and wondering if a 500JEFF is the better move.
