.416 Remington vs .458 Lott

A great investment!

I doubt I'll ever hunt with it - a .375 H&H will do the trick on anything I have ever or do plan to hunt.
Hahaha, I used to think that. But I've hunted with a 416 Rem Mag and 2 different 505 Gibbs. And have a few more to go yet;)

I know topics like this have been beaten to death, but what are the forums thoughts on a Model 70 Classic Super Grade (1994, New Haven) in .416 Remington vs. a Ruger Mark II in 458 Lott?

What would you be using a cartridge that size for?
The Lott would have a slight edge for elephants or buffalo.

If you are not hunting elephants then I would suggest the 416 Remington magnum. Suggested Bullets for 458 would be the 400 grain which actually had more energy than the 500 grain bullet.
The Remington - I suggest the 350 rather than the 400 grain round nose.
The energy difference between the above Bullets weights is, honestly very little in realistic terms.
The Lott has a limitless but going fir it in that it is slightly more versatile than the 416.
The Lott had a recoil factor of righty 15% more than the Remington magnum. If you are practising a lot (pun intended) you may want to think about the recoil factor!
For deep, deep penetration the 500 grain Lott will be better.
Personally, I would take the Winchester. I hope this helps. Other members will obviously have different opinions and, so be it.

I ended up with both. The .416 will be headed to SA next year for buffalo, the Lott will most likely be a safe queen.

Great thoughts and conversation. I have both the 375 H&H and 416 Rem Mag in Winchester Model 70. Took the 416 last year and shot a buffalo, Impala, Nyala and Sable with 400 grain Trophy Bonded Federal ammunition. For this hunt the 416 Winchester was absolutely outstanding. You can go wrong. And as the old saying goes "you can't have too many rifles".

I wholeheartedly agree that one can never ever have too many rifles.

I have a 416 rem mag, m70 I hunted buff and elephant with. Great client elephant gun imo because it is light weight to carry many miles. Accurate, great energy for the bullet weight, and easy to feed.

However I also have a collection of Ruger Mark II RSM rifles and love them. Especially the customized one in 505 Gibbs which laid out a buffalo fantastically.

For your stated purpose, get the Ruger... it is much more interesting. In fact, find one with the elephant on the floor plate ;) And if you come across one in 375 with the lion... alert me immediately as I need it to complete my collection.
I have the Lion Model Ruger in 375 and will be selling shortly.

the Winchester is a superior rifle compared to the Ruger. I have shot both in a variety of chambering's and would take the Winchester any day.

both cartridges are great for buffalo. my choice would be 2 rifles, one in each cartridge!

Why is the Winchester M70 superior to the RSM? I have owned both and shot both extensively and this is definitely not the conclusion I came to................. Having said that I am now regretting selling me M70 Safari Express

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
