375 Ruger vs 375 HH

There's one factor that decides the issue for me; the simple fact that you have to depend on Hornady for ammunition is a deal breaker in my book. There are many great ammunition manufacturers that make and supply ammo for the 375 H&H. Hornady is your one and only choice for the 375 Ruger.

For me personally, I reload and can use any bullet manufacturer I want. That being said, if I'm in a bind and have to rely on purchased ammunition, Hornady is the last choice in my book.

Several custom loaders available with a multitude of bullet options (Hendershots, DoubleTap etc)

I am very fond of the 375 caliber , I own several 375's in H&H and they are all fantastic rifles . I also own a Ruger Alaskan in 375 Ruger .

My Ruger Alaskan in 375 Ruger has become one of my favorite rifles and I when I reach into my safe to pack for a hunt the little Ruger is one of the first rifles I pick up.

Some interesting discussion here on which is the preferred 375 and on rifle weight. I'll add my 2c.

I didn't know there was any 375 other than HandH until I started reading this forum. I've spent my whole life living in Zambia with lots of hunting friends. Does my ignorance of alternative 375s point to dominance of the HandH calibre or my lack of exposure? Suffice to say that a 375 HandH mag is a very popular and common rifle in these parts.

As to rifle weight, when I was in the market for a larger bore than my 30.06 lately I handled whatever I could in 375and above. I found the new 375s very light, and they felt too small in my hands. Ultimately I bought a new CZ 550 in 416 Rigby because I liked the heavier weight and bigger feel of the rifle.

I have to say that in general terms I am a conservative traditionalist and is why when I was considering an Africa ready rifle I built a 404 Jeffery. When it comes to the 375, I was loading for a friends 375 H&H in his 602 so have a little experience with it as there was quite a bit of shooting during the testing. I have to say though, that when the 375 Ruger was released I imediatly took a liking to it in theory and ordered a round for my collection. There is something about the Ruger cartridge that just seems "right" to my eyes next to the H&H version and with little to nothing between them in performance, that if I was to build a rifle in this bore size it would be the Ruger cartridge rather than the H&H.

I would stick with the 375 H&H Magnum. Since it's introduction 105 years ago it has been the King of the medium calibers. It has enough case capacity just as it sits. Although it has a belt, the case design ensures smooth feeding and more importantly absolute extraction every time.

Dont fix it if it ain't broke, give me the old 375 H&H any day.

I've got a Colt Sauer in 375 H&H, absolutely the best action of any rifle I've ever owned. The action slides like glass. The 375 H&H is comfortable to shoot, more of a long push than a sharp recoil. Easier to shoot than my 300 Weatherby. The Weatherby is a sharp biting recoil.

Unless more makers take up production of rifles and cases/loaded ammo, the 375Ruger will disappear; just as many other good cartridges have and will.

The 375 Ruger isn't going anywhere any time soon. This thread has over 18,000 views and 130 posts. That is a good amount of interest in the 375 cals (particularly 2 of them) for a single thread. Let alone all the other threads here on AH for the Ruger.

Watching online interests and content in forums is part of what I do in this industry. Its responses and exposure like this which propels companies to put more A&P behind it, thus driving it even further.

Besides, why not just go with both?

Old round, new round or future round. It does not matter. In all my years of hunting I have NEVER seen a .375H&H, .375Ruger rifle or case kill one single animal.
I have however seen plenty animals die from a well placed .375 caliber bullet that was fired from those rifles.
In the end. Does it matter how old the design is that fired said round as long as it is 270gr doing 2680fps or 300gr at 2550fps.

Gentleman, take note of what Fritz Rabe says, you will not get better advice /opinions/suggestions from any man. Fritz Rabe came from the old school of PH /hunters and has a vast knowledge regarding rifles /ammo /Bow hunting dangerous game /animals/and any aspect to do with hunting.

The parent case for the .375 Ruger I believe is the 8x68S brass..you can fire form the 8x68S brass to a .375 Ruger...

I am pretty sure the 375 Ruger case is Rugers/Hornadys own design and not something one can easily make form other cases.

I suspect it will follow the 376 steyr in a dozen years or so. Unfortunately however good the design is, its as we say in the prospecting business " pretty well staked ground"

The 375 Ruger will fade in time, sooner rather than later. The only one loading for the cartridge other than custom loads is Hornady and their penchant for quality leaves a lot to be desired. The Creedmoore is an out and out total success story, the 375 Ruger will prove to be a bitter disappointment. It offers nothing over the 375 H&H and on paper the 375 H&H is superior. At the end of the day, all you have to do is walk into any good sized sports shop and stop by the ammunition section. You will find an array of 375 H&H cartridges from a half dozen manufacturers. If they carry the 375 Ruger, the only offering will be Hornady, something I wouldn't waste my money on.

The 375 Ruger is now loaded by Nosler also so the there is a little choice.
It uses the same bullets as the H&H so there is lots of choice for the reloader.
As for the what if you're ammo doesn't show up. Is the bag containing ammo the only one airlines lose what if the ammunition makes it and the rifle goes on its own trip?
The Ruger cartridge has been chambered by at least 4 different makers fits in standard Mauser action without a lot of work. It costs much less than most 375H&H rifles so more people can afford them.
As for how fast it catches on compared to 6.5CM that is apples and oranges the 6.5CM covers target shooters, varmit,and deer sized game as well as tactical markets.
The 375 Ruger is in a small market as is the whole medium bore group of cartridges.
As for components two companies make brass for it a little pricey and sometimes out of stock. But if you keep your eye out it can be purchased. This is also due to the fact that it is a nitch cartridge and has limited demand.
The 375 Ruger will never replace the H&H. What it does do is bring the power of the H&H to more people.
