375 H&H vs 300 H&H

I used my ZKK 602 in Namibia...took some shots out to 270 - 280 meters.. I used Federal factory with 260gr. Nosler accubond and factory Remington 270 gr. core locked and reloads with 235 gr. Barnes X..all worked well.. Actually those Remingtons work nicely on game like oryx, kudu and wildebeest..bullets found right under the skin on the opposite side..

The one far right is a trophy bonded 250 grainer...big dissapointment..

Here is the senario.
I own 2 375 H&H rifle both on Brno ZKK 602 actions with pop up peep sights in the receiver.
Converting one to 300 H&H will be a pain in the arse.....

I am thinking using the original one with longer barrel with 270gr premium bullets in 270gr for longer range work(2700fps) max 300 meters and the custom 24" barrel one with 340gr bullets(2300fps) for bushveldt hunting.....

Bear in mind I eat what I hunt and with our stringent gun laws rebarreling to 300 H&H as mentioned will be apain in the arse...

This will be for larger pg species and for the smaller ones I will stick to 7x57mm...

Would it be possible to do it with this?

300 H&H is a good round. I've fired them through my .300 WBY Mag a few times. Much cheaper, and they reach out ALMOST as far. For deer and such they've always worked great, but I haven't tried them on anything bigger. The .300 WBY Mag is an EXCELLENT round, though. I wouldn't rule that out as a possibility. They do have quite a bit more knock down power, and they don't drop as much. I do plan on using it for bear, and I've heard that it works great. As far as African game, I really have no idea. The 35 or 375 would probably be better for that, but I think those are a bit overkill for deer.

Recoil isn't too bad with the .300 H&H or WBY Mag, but I have no experience with the other two.

If it is for longer range than 375 h&h hut the same capacity as 375 h&h why not a 375 wby CRF.

With both H&Hs you will not have to worry about adjusting to a different bolt cycle length-they will both cycle just the same.
Ammo availability will be a breeze with the 375, not so much the 300 H&H, especially an emergency restock overseas in case of lost luggage.

Good day. I continued with the .375 H&H and testing. I tested the Remington 798 with the barrel cut to 21.5 inches. Same reload: 300 grams with 75 grams of W760, averaging 2442 feet per second. The Hornady Factory Super Performance .270 averaged 2770 feet per second. A beautiful 21.5-inch barrel. With the Winchester .70, a 24-inch barrel, I had gotten 2500 and 2835 feet per second. Is that ammunition available where IvW lives?

I would basically like to find out if anyody is using a 375 H&H for longer range work out to 300 meters and how succesful they have been.
Both my 375 are licenced so that simplifies matters on this end

Like me more often than not, I think you are overthinking this.

With 300gr TSX 2550 fps loads, I have shot 200 yards from the prone position using a “field expedient” front rest, ie rolled up jacket over an ammo can. My 5-shot groups were under 2”. Since I was loading for 100 yard Limpopo shots, I was very pleased.

Africa to me provides an opportunity to take game with .375 and larger bore rifles. I have many 6.5mm and .30 caliber target rifles but for Africa, I want to get as close as possible to game. That stated if I wanted to take a record book animal on the Eastern Cape, I would consider bringing one of my very accurate rifles. Baboons?

Took a zebra once in the Omay at 275 yds with the H&H. We had chased that group of zebra for half a day up and down koppes and high grass, only for them to drop down and run across a bare canyon to the other side. PH said this is as close as we are getting to those zebra today. I was able to get into a sitting position with the sticks and found that while I was moving on the target , the wobble was staying within minute of zebra with the 1x4 scope. Decided to take the shot and with the rifle sighted in for buffalo, held just below the withers. Dead right there. 300g TSX

I need to figure out if I can use one of my 375 for longer range work succesfully without going through the burocrating bullshit we have to deal with here..

In similar dillema, I have 375 HH.

Historically I avoided to obtain any magnum rifle, such as 300 win mag.
375 HH i bought for Africa, but now I want to give it another purpose.

Now, my new plan is evolving.
To hunt red deer in open fields in the north of my country, distance up to 300 meters.
300 win mag, or 8x68 would be my first choice.

But I want to avoid buying another rifle, for only one specific hunt, which I will not do too often.
So my plan now is to upgrade on ammunition - TSX in 270 grain loaded in 375.
300 grain bullet in 375 has similar trajectory as 30-06. And 30-06 is not too bad at all!

So, 270 grain in 375 should have trajectory better then 30-06, which makes it good choice for 300 meters hunts.
I think it should work.

I took my longest shot ever with my CZ-550 375 H&H, and 300 grs TSX factory ammo. This happened last year in the Eastern Cape, and I took a Kudu on the opposite ridge, right at 312 yds. The conditions (in my opinion) were perfect, no wind, with a crips temperature. Kudu was quartering away, and I placed the dot of my Trijicon scope on his hump and took the shot.

Sounds like.it works very similar to a.Nosler Partition which loses 50-100% of the lead in the front half. In high velocity strikes I've recovered Partitions that looked essentially like a wadcutter that bulged to slightly larger than caliber diameter at the front. They lost 100% of the front lead and the front jacket folded all the way back to the base.

It sounds almost like a bullet failure but the animals tend to react violently to the "spalling" in that application. I've got an acquaintance that has taken a ridiculous number of whitetail deer with .243 Partitions and never had one go over 60'. Most just go bang flop (high shoulder shot). I love it when people who have shot 3 deer in their life time try to tell him .243 is to small and just wounds deer.

In order to retain credibility I will neither confirm nor deny the rumors of the number he has shot.

Knew a man that had similar experience with 243, albeit with the cheapest and heaviest bullet that grouped well. He liked the cheapest 100 grain he could find on the shelf. It was always a one shot affair for him. I don’t doubt t a better quality bullet would improve on this.
