375 h&h long range accuracy?

The cartridge is absolutely capable. This might open a can of worms but I’ve never seen a Ruger that shot as well as you’d want for a 200 yard + shot on critters that size.
I have been hunting with Ruger rifles since the very early 1970s along with other makes and have never found them to be problematic in any way. Accuracy has certainly not been a problem for me.

No offense Mr Rado but I don't believe there is such a thing as a good case for a 6.5 needmore except maybe paper targets.

I was reading/running our moving moose target last week and noticed some very small holes. Yup, a 6,5 Creedmoor has landed in our moose club, too.

It's been marketed better than any other caliber ever. I see people buying it for our moose hunt where shots are typically under 50 yds, what are they thinking?

Yes it became moose and brown bear (!!!) legal here in Finland ... when monometals came the energy requirements dropped... but does being legal make it good for those animals?

I guess the worlwide sniper-wannabeness is showing here. Yes 6,5 CM is very good for long range paper and varmints but... there are proper big game short range calibers!

Like 375 H&H that can be stretched out if needed. Ugh!

I know that 6.5x55 is Swedish traditional caliber for moose. And 6.5 CM is its ballistic twin.
Plus add the marketing to Nordic hunting culture and there you have it.

That being said, my choice for moose would be 9.3x62 or 375 H&H.

Yes but... 6,5x55 was popular because it was a military caliber in countries like Sweden and Norway -and there was nothing else easily and cheaply available.

And in Finland, for example, you could legally own only one rifle and one shotgun. The rifle took everything from varmints to birds to moose. So 6,5, 7,62x53R and 308 got popular. Lots of milsurp.

Is this still the case? Or you guys could have additional firearms?

It started to change in the 80's. Now it's okay to have more - once you have an acceptable reason for each.
"Acceptable reason for each"? Do they accept "cause I don't have that one", "I haven't bought a rifle all month", "it's just too pretty", or "500 Jeffrey is my middle name"? I'd hate to have to have an actual reason for each gun but I'm glad you guys are having an easier time with it now

You never know. It varies by town, too. You leave a buying permit application and try to explain why you need the gun according to the law. What animals to hunt etc. Authorities can deny it without telling why. We don't have any constitutional rights to own guns.

I have had all kinds of guns for decades. A couple of years ago I was denied a 38 Special application. There was no reason, the authorities wrote "There is no reason to deny this application but we are denying it anyway. We don't need to give a reason."

Oh well. I have one application in right now. Fingers crossed. Leaving an application costs € 130 per gun and the money is gone, accepted or not.

The .375, H&H and Ruger, are both capable of longer than DG performance.

It makes a good 400 Yard deer cartridge when loaded with a 270 grain bullet and an appropriate optic. I put a cheap Vortex on mine to test function and accuracy before sending it to the gunsmith.

When I get it back I’ll put a Nightforce 2.5-10 X 42 on it. That will suffice for anything from close to as far as I care to shoot on any game animal I care to hunt. One thing I prefer about the .375 Ruger is the ease of finding ammo. While only Hornady seems to be supporting the cartridge they do a pretty good job of keeping the cartridge on the shelves. Good luck trying to find H&H ammo if you shoot factory ammo. Another thing I like is the short stiff barrel. That helps with accuracy by helping to eliminate barrel flex.

European standard.
Except application varies from country to country, and sometimes from local police department to another.
General condition for all gun owners is "the reason to own", but application can be different:

For hunting, you can have as much as you want under same "reason" for "hunting", or you must justify each caliber.
You have 30-06, so why would you need 9.3x62? This depends from country to country

Legal reasons to own are: hunting, sport, self defense, and collection. thats it. Each of these activities must be supported by some evidence.

If you have one million dollar collection of guns, and your heirs dont have "reason to own", generally the collection will be confiscated by goverment.
That is the reason I asked my son to make hunting exam, he does not need to go hunting, but now he can inherit my collection. Guns are dangerous, you know, so this is all for our own good. We must be thankful for such extra care by our states!

Geez!

I walk into the toy store. Fill out a paper that I think is a violation of my constitutional rights, they call the state law enforcement agency to run my background check, takes about five minutes, I pay for said item and go home with a new gun.

You have my sympathy.

There's no such thing as a gun for self defence here. Hardly any other self defence is acceptable either, you lose in court almost every time.

When (if) I get my 375 I'm temped to try 235 TSX for deer and moose. I'm trying to get my head into monos and they like velocity, 235 weight sounds light for 375 but monos may work just fine. And give a good point blank range about 250. Could use a small scope,no turrets to deal with.

I bought a few boxes of 270 Interlocks for practise / break in.

petander,

I disliked one of your previous posts.

It’s not a dislike of you but rather a dislike of your government and having to give a reason for owning any firearm.

I don’t want you to think I dislike you personally. I just dislike the circumstances of your situation. I tend to not trust any government especially my own.

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
