.375 dilemma

@Albert GRANT if you're left handed, go with a left hand gun! @Royal27 might help you decide on that one. If you buy a new CZ, order a LH, otherwise buy that LH A Bolt and make it work, you can add a mercury tube or lead weight to the stock if you need it heavier. And even in the fore end to keep it balanced.

I doubt I will ever purchase another RH bolt now, at least not in a hunting rifle. I shot RH bolts for years, but offhand in particular I'm just faster and can get back on target more quickly with a LH bolt. The barrel doesn't drop nearly as much while working bolt and I can keep my head down better.

I'd seriously consider that A-Bolt, really seriously. I have a LH CZ in .375 and love it, but they also charge about $600 extra for LH, which is both annoying and expensive.

Be warned though.... Once you get a LH bolt it will be hard to purchase anything else. This does limit your choices and esp with the true big bores.

I would prefer a left handed rifle, but it is 5-800 more for the cz just because it is left handed. I practiced all year with a right handed gun and that is what I used on my safari. Wasn't 100% but still worked very well for me. That's why I was looking at the right handed stuff. Lots more options and better deals

@Royal27 didn't see your post while I was writing the one above. Prob is now someone is going to have to outbid me on gunbroker for the cz before I go get the A-bolt! Anyone looking for a new right for $850? Ends at 5pm

Brand new 375 Rugers in LH for under $800 on GB. I saw one a few months ago for $500 (used). Yes, you can only load 3 in the mag and 1 in the tube, but if you can't get the job done with 4 rounds, the problem isn't the gun. Whether Ruger or H&H, it pushes the same bullet at about the same velocity. The critters won't tell the difference.

May you be outbid! :)

I already had the stuff to load the h&h otherwise I would have gone with the ruger. Have about 300 h&h brass now. As for the amount the gun holds, if you remember from my hunt report I usually only need 1, however that warthog shooting spree really got me thinking g about how handy the cz was, and could be if things went south on dangerous game, thats the only reason I was thinking 5 would be good.

Let us know how it works out.. and if you are the proud new owner of a CZ.. or an A-bolt :)

There is a guy on another board who points out in his byline, completely tongue in cheek:rolleyes:, that for Dangerous Game, a double is by far the best, but if using a bolt gun it must hold 5 down :confused:o_O

And Albert, we all know that anyone with over 5000 posts to their name is a true expert and their advice must be adhered to... :D:rolleyes:

Seriously, you should take Royal's advise on this even if it means spending more money. The extra expense will only hurt once, being hindered by a less than good fit on a gun will hurt every time you touch it. And if you do end up with that gun for $850, you should be able to get back out from under it at that cost.

I don't care who you are, that right there is funny. :A Yes: :E Lol:

Royal you know I posted that just for you;) Knew you'd like it :)

Is that fuzzy math?

Well I didn't get outbid. So now the question is stay with the RH CZ 550 or try to sell it and get the LH A-bolt..... I seem to have an uncanny ability to complicate things

  • Sell CZ
  • Lose shipping only and be happy with deal
  • Go straight from shipping CZ to gun shop to buy LH A-bolt
  • Be told A-bolt was sold 20 minutes before you arrived
  • Watch another lefty walk out with your rifle
  • Cry a little bit
  • Start looking for new LH rifle

Exactly!

the CZ will be a fine rifle after some basic break in. i would strongly recommend saving your pennies and then sending it to AHR in the future for an upgrade. to put it simply, i would easily choose an AHR upgraded CZ 550 over a factory browning A-bolt.

Save my pennies, indeed! Before I do that it would have to be a left handed version. This one, unless it has issues, will be staying the way it is other than getting a limbsaver and suppressor

if its a vintage Remington, then it might be a decent rifle. however all Remington rifles made in the last 10-15 years have been cheap junk as far as ive seen. the CZ is a good option and can always be upgraded later by sending it to AHR.

Hill Country Rifles down in Texas told my son that 8 out of 10 new Rem barrels are junk for building their custom rifles. So I think there is a lot of agreement that the majority of the new Rems are less than many of us would desire!

At the risk of hijacking this thread, can't argue with the Remington quality comments. However, I just read this short article on Randy Wakeman's site and he suggests that Remington is turning things around. Randy is one of the few gun writers that will write negative comments on junking guns, so he's got some credibilty with me.

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!

Hello. If you haven't already sold this rifle then I will purchase. Please advise. Thank you.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
