.300 Win Mag scope suggestions

In that price range, I would take a look at Vortex as well.

For that matter is there that big of difference between 8x and 10x on elk size game at 400 yards give or take?

Think of it this way, eight power at 400 yards is a 50 yard shot with zero magnification. As long as your eye sight is relatively good, eight power will work. You can practice on life size targets at those ranges to get a good feel using the different power settings.

There is not. 8x is plenty on a deer sized target at 400 yards.

With a good rifle, you can whack small varmints like groundhogs and crows out to 400 with a 10x scope.

Looking to upgrade the junk scope that came on my .300 win mag and can't decide what to put on it. I am kind of partial to leupold, but not sure what model or power range. I have a price range of about $400. I will use the rifle for a Colorado elk hunt in 2021 and plan to use it for moose and caribou in alaska and possibly some black bear here in Michigan and maybe up across the border in Canada. I also hope to bring it on a plains game hunt in a couple of years. All of this said that means that I will be anything from 25 yards in thick brush to 400 yards of open prairie. I'm not sure wether to go with the vx-3i in 2.5-8 or 3.5-10 or maybe go with a vx-2 or vx-freedom in 3-9. Suggestions??? Thank you
My proposition MeoPro 3-9x42.

If you have a Cabellas or bass pro nearby, wait until the fall hunting sale, get $100 off by turning in your old junk scope. That is how I got a VX5 for $500

Hold up, how did I not know this? They give you that credit for any scope?

Any scope. Even the absolute garbage uncoated scope that came with a crossbow I bought on clearance. The bass pro in concord N.C. even has $10 airsoft scopes they carry just for that sale.

I have a Leopold VX 3i 4.5-14x CDS scope on my .308 Win and a Leopold Freedom 3-9x scope on my .223. Both rifles are Weatherby Vanguards.

I regularly use both rifles shooting the 15" steel gongs at our range with both of these rifles. There is a world of difference between 9x and 14x at the 400m gong.

Just mounted a VX-3i 2.5-8 on my Ruger No. 1 chambered in 375 H&H. Fits the size of the rifle. Eye relief is good and just looks good. Will be sighting it in shortly.

I like Leupold scopes and Swarovskis.
Why handicap a hunt of a lifetime over spending too little in a scope.
Suggest a 3-9x 40 scope of good quality.
Personally I’d go Leupold or Swarovski but the matter is sure not going to be $400.
Work out what the hunts and travel will cost and then look at what a big difference very good quality scope will cost and importantly, the benefits!!

I am pretty sure you can get a VX-3 3x9x40 for about $400.

Normally I am completely against “Being a Geer Queer”, pardoners my French.
In my mind that is the easiest way to handicap a hunt, you soend so much money you can’t affird a decent hunt, or the time to actually train with it.

Except with optics. Optics matter more than anything else. I’d rather have a VX5HD scope on top of a Remington M770 and shooting cheap PPU ammunition, rather than the other way around.
Most optics look good at high noon. Look through them on a cloudy day after the sun has dipped below the horizon.
Even on a bright day focus on your target, and look at the edges.... situational awareness is key.

Like Eric posted, money buys low light capabilities and good mechanicals. A simple repeatability test I do on a new scope is to shoot a group and then turn the turrets a complete turn and then return them back to the original setting and shoot another group. That group should be very close to the same POI. I've found with high end scopes they are repeatable but with cheap scopes, it's a crap shoot.

The vx-3i is a quality scope isn't it? Or should I be looking else where?

My advice is worth what it costs. It's a decent scope for the money. Will it work? Yes, but if your hunt is out several months, save your pennies and consider get something better.

Edit: If I'm shooting something 400 yards, I want the best glass I can afford.

It is what I have on my DG rifle. Mine is the 1.5 x 5 with a 1 inch tube.
If I had to do it over again, I would have sprung for the 30mm tube with an illuminated reticle.

But you aren’t using it on a DG rifle so you are good.

The VX3i is a very solid mid range scope. Other similarly priced scopes have more features, but have worse glass in my opinion.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
