30-06 Rifle for Plains Game - How Big?

@ftrovato — funny, you’ve got a sense of Humor !! And Your opinion is as welcome and valid as many others (at least you’re not pushing the 6.5 Creedmore !)
We all have our likes and dislikes.

However, I do really enjoy Africahunting.com and all the interactions on this forum!

Funny thing on the 6.5 calibers. For the most part I don't own any cartridges that are newer than around 75 years. I simply like the classics and never was a trendy shooter.

HOWEVER, I recently bought a 6.5 PRC and I've been reloading and shooting it every week for the last 6-8 weeks. I'm. really enjoying it and I'm even going to take it to Scotland in Sept to do some Stag Hunting.

I kind of feel progressive now not being stuck in the Old Dinosaur Cartridge Tarpit!

I like being in the Old Dinosaur Cartridge Tarpit. Don’t rain on my parade. We can’t all be cool, I’ll just stick to shooting my critters with old school ammo.

Nothing like hunting with an old British Cartridge!

@Flipper Dude
Good to see I'm not the only cartridge dinosaur.
Last week u had a stock standard 25-303 barrel put in my old No1Mk111smle.
An 87 gn at 2,900-3,000 fps equal to the old 250 Savage.
Compared to my fast 25 with a 100 gn @ 3,660fps it is very pedestrian but I'm looking forward to hunting with the old big standard 25 again. It will bring back a lot of fond memories as that is what started my 25 love affair.

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen - Bob I’m getting concerned with your posts about “fast 25…”. It seems your are spending a lot of time “flirting” with a .25 caliber and while they may be fast - they are of Low-Moral-Character. Do you realize that .25 is only 1/100th of an INCH away from a .243 ?? The same .243 that you consider the “filthy Tramp” of the rifle cartridge World? Better stay away from Her and any of her “close relatives”….you are getting mighty close to “cheating” !!

The 25 may only be a millipoofteenth bigger than a 243 but it can carry more weight better than the horrible little 243 and do it with more CLASS.
No one has ever said I have got any moral character let alone any character.
My safe will NEVER be shamed by having a 243 near it.
I would prefer to hunt with a slingshot than a 243.
The only way you will get a 243 in my hand is if I get Alzheimer's and forget everything.

I’ve got a 25-303 barrel here that has "allegedly "never been shot. I’m keeping as incase I feel the urge to screw it onto one of my smle's

@Bob Nelson 35Whelen - I might be slow but I GET IT …. I REALLY DO, you don’t care for the .243 but are receptive to its slightly bigger TRANS Cartridge .25-06 !!
It’s still a .243 but has a BEARD and is NOT wearing a DRESS.

I'm sure I have told this story before, but in 2007, I asked 6 PH's around a campfire, "what cartridge would you prefer that your clients bring to hunt plains game?"

Every single one of them told me a ".30/06."

Even with older controlled expansion bullets bullets (like Remington Core-Lokts), 180g, should perform just fine.

IME, sometimes monolithic bullets do not expand enough and just "pencil-hole" through an animal unless a significant bone is struck.

Another non-fan of the .243 here.

I have no idea why the Good Lord Almighty, gave so much killing power to a mere 0.014" in bullet diameter, but he did!

I must confess. I just sold a Sako Classic in 243 Win and thought I was done with that cartridge.

Then I saw this Dakota 10 on Guns International and bought it a few days ago. It's in transit to me now.

I dont think I'll hunt anything bigger than coyotes with it, but I will spend time enjoying this 243 at the range.

@Safari Dave - I don’t think anyone born before 1970 would be surprised by this.

Yep, that would include me...

Screw it on mate and go have fun
Mine was given to me and 7/10.
Cases are available or easily made and dies are easy to get.
Great fun round and better than any useless 243.

The 25-06 ain't no trans case mate at least it does the job it was designed to do. Unlike that over rated so called dual purpose tomato stake cartridge. It's neither fish or fowl, it's just foul.
I think that's why @CBH Australia has a muddy girl 243, it goes with the Broken Heel outfit. He says he bought it for his wife but I don't really know about that tho because he actually owns a real rifle in 280AI so he might be reformed.

Nice rifle shame about the calibre. Could it be re-bored to 284 win or a nice 7X64.

A 139 gr Hornady Interlock bullet has been known to pencil through red deer because … it was designed for the .264 Winchester Magnum. Appropriate bullet selection will always beat fashion and promotional bullshit.

No, That was the Hornaday Marketing team that “introduced “ a flat shooting 6.5 that’s .021 thou more.

Some Old Dinosaurs here already knew about an amazing 6.5 that’s been around a hundred years but it’s best marketed in Europe because it works well there delivering results daily

Last time I was in the Palace they were asking about “Big Bob .35”

I think that’s his drag name and stage name. He would need the make-up too because he has a good face for radio.

A .223 I added to her collection.

Problem is I also have a brand new smle barrel sitting here as well, and my full wood smle is a fullbore rifle that shoots better than me and my Parker hale safari deluxe is in original condition

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
