@Kevin Peacocke, i never wished for a smaller caliber or fewer bullets when going after a wounded brown bear. i suspect DG hunters feel the same about follow ups in their neck of the woods. BTW, i own a double 450-400

in a word "nope" too much brush. better to not get a shot off than to chase a wounded animal for days! nobody knows where the bullet will ACTUALLY hit after clipping that brush in front of the bull, so, that shot is a pass.

+1 again, stayed at Africa Sky twice, both times were great stays, Gilbert was invaluable getting guns thru and also was great getting me to and fro. Travel Express was also awesome and they set up my last stay.

as a possible option, i have a trijicon 1-6x accupoint on my o/u 450-400. it has not had that many shots thru it, maybe a 100. it has great glass, and never needs batteries. i suspect if one is going to shoot a 458 lott, 460 weatherby or even a 458 win, a smaller, lighter weight scope like...

for what its worth, i think north fork softs are the best soft bullets. made right now. certainly in the class of the swift a frame, cutting edge and barnes. i have used both barnes and north fork bullets for a long time and have pretty much switched from the X bullets to the north forks...

yes, a soft point is ideal. just place the shot well with a bullet of 30 cal or bigger with a decent soft=a very dead bear

you are exactly right. here is the problem, shooting at a 500+yard bear, it is going to run after the first shot, who knows ANYONE that can hit a running bear at 500+ yards? NOBODY!! i too guide brown bears, the 200 yard rule is a good one. i know a guy that lost a bear (a legit 10' bear)...

don't use the lapua; a 3006 with 180+ gr bullet is a better choice. the 375 ruger with 250 gr GMX bullets are a good choice as well, i have shot moose and caribou with that bullet and it worked great.

as noted above, that is a lot of scope for that rifle. a 1-4x or 6x would be less likely to slip, be lighter and more appropriate. 2 cents worth.
