hi, just curious. is the 458 win rifle lighter than the 470 capstick? it seems weird that it kicks much less than the 458 and getting an additional 100 fps out of a 500 gr bullet, both are in a straight case, powder charge can't be a lot different, so am curious about the substantial recoil...

first, you better figure out what rifle it actually is. the 300 win could be turned into a .338 win which is a fine rifle. action is likely too short for the 375 H&H. the 375 ruger might fit though. good luck with the project.

a 300 win has a different bolt face. a 3006 has the same bolt face as the 9.3x62 and many people start at the 06 and rebarrel.

i think the PH did a great job, shooting if/when needed and then laying off and waiting (a loooong time) on the hunter to make his shots. well done on the PH. pretty brushy shooting environment. i suspect i would have done a bit better (like many on here think too) but, as @grand veneur...

the truth is, you probably don't need more gun than the 458 win with a proper load. you could add a bit of weight to the 458 (assuming you have one) ant it is not too bad to shoot.

450-400 3" zoli o/u 1-6 accupoint scope: moose 225 yards, neck shot blue wildebeest, 195 yards heart/lung shot moose 320 yards (was previously hit) shot in the rump on an animal that was standing still, with a good rest, 250 yards is completely do-able with my rifle.

i would love to see the violent ones shot.... with bean bag loads out of a shotgun. then arrested, then jailed or deported depending on status.

i owned a 270 wsm for a while, ammo was hard to find and expensive. ballistically, it was a laser. i sold it and bought a 3006- it shoots 130 gr barnes bullets at 32/3300 fps too. and, can find ammo.

although i agree, that many people that are not impacted don't care...california is still voting idiots in to represent them. and when enough idiots are there to vote themselves benefits, the working guys guys like you) will have to pay for it, and then you get tired of the crap and leave...

make a bolt gun in 404 Jeff. i bet a run of 100 would sell out pretty quick. put a 24" barrel on it, make 75 blued and wood (decent to nice wood) and 25 in synthetic/stainless. there, my 2 cents

in war, wounding is considered better. then it takes a couple or 3 guys out of action to move the wounded soldier, then a medi-vac of some sort (more people and resources) doctors and nurses to care for that one wounded individual. better in the big picture.

hornady made a 250 gr gmx bullet for the 375 ruger (which i own) and i shot caribou and moose with it and it did a great job, shot flat, hit hard and was a pretty tough bullet. they make a similar bullet now for both 375's (ruger and h&h) they shoot pretty fast too, which will mean a pretty...

i pretty much agree with @sgt_zim above. i have used CFE 223, and push swift a frames 2500 fps in my 9.3x62. at 2400 fps, just about any 286 gr bullet is going to work for you. good luck on your hunt.

ok, i counted 6 shots, AND on his first shot, when he reloaded, he put 2 rounds in the gun so he might have shot another shot but edited it out. i only saw 2 bullets hit the bull, one high and back lungs, one in the guts. i did see a bullet hole in the rear of the lungs. regardless, only good...

the only problem with buckshot on bears (or leopards so i hear) is that at the close distances they are used, the shot pattern is not that large and the penetration on a frontal shot with buckshot is much more limited. a broadside white tail and a frontal brown bear are vastly different things.

not to hijack the thread, but, hunting "dangerous game", by its very name and nature is "risky" and to a large degree why we hunt them at all i suspect. Having 6 available 500 gr bullets quickly available would be a great way to mitigate risk. :)

i agree in general, but the triple shock bullets don't open that great at 2500 fps in 375 at a longer distance, so i suspect 2400 fps would give you 2200 fps (ish) impact velocity at the animal. in the case of barnes x bullets, faster is better for bullet performance.
