    Big bore recoil

With talk of fit. About how much are we talking to get a custom fit stock? I thinking of something in the .375,.404,.416 class and I am hyper aware of fit so just wondering the price tag after all we are talking a gun for use on a $15k hunt (plus with Bison and Moose in Gizz country it not like...

    Gun for a new hunter

The number 5 has a rubber "recoil pad" that only makes it hard to get good hold on the rifle

    Gun for a new hunter

I learned that from going from a No.5 (feels like a 12 gauge with full loads) to a no.4 (About like a .30/30) aka the hard way

    Gun for a new hunter

Lots of nice 6.5x55 rifles in Canada. I agree that a .30-06 should be manageable but I also see people (not here) talk about how the .30-06 is about the maximum gun for the average experienced hunter so was a little concerned but I find my Vanguard a easy rifle to shot personally. Even so I...

    Gun for a new hunter

My Cousin (24 years old) wants to come up and hunt with me for Caribou and maybe Moose. He is a city boy and hasn't hunted or shot before My go-to gun is a .30-06 Weatherby Vanguard got it when they were new and a damn good value but I think a bit too much recoil. The other in my guns in by...

    45-70 for dangerous game?

Most of the conversation has been around Buffalo however it terms of Dangerous Game I would think the .45/70 would be effective for Leopard and Lion much like it is for big bear in North America.

Eland Cartridges for recoil sensitive shooter?

I enjoy mine because my Dad was a just post World War 2 british army draftee and I got to watch him (as a kid in the 90s) put up aimed shots as fast as a lot of guys can with a semi-auto. That bolt is as smooth as butter. I almost want to get in re-stocked and use it more but it would be ashame...

Eland Cartridges for recoil sensitive shooter?

The only thing I will say is do not get a Number 5 Lee Enfield as my 12 year old Shoulder can testify to (it a great example of how much weight and stock design matter to pain )

I keep hearing it so I said it because someone would bring it if I didn't but never first hand so I do assume its likely BS

    Elk at 688 yards with a 243

Some Alaskans swear by the 9mm apparently Personally I would rather have Pepper Spray(I've deployed it a charging Black Bear and it worked) on my hip over a light handgun (Carrying in even in the Bush is illegal in Canada now) but ideally a rifle(.30 cal +) or a 12 gauge on my back.

Eland Cartridges for recoil sensitive shooter?

The PH said bare minimum is a 7mm and should be at least a .308/.30-06 class rifle according to OP.

Eland Cartridges for recoil sensitive shooter?

If they are saying .30 cal should be consider the minimum start work towards a 30-06 get some reduced recoil which are around 6.5 Creedmoor recoil level according to Mr. Hawk (10Ft/bls) With a .30-06 one is basically set short of thick skinned dangerous game. With 2 year of work a it should...

Eland Cartridges for recoil sensitive shooter?

I am in the club of 6.5 Creedmoor. the creed is basically the 6.5 Swede in a modern shorter cartridge and the good ol' Swede is one of the best low recoil moose cartridges around. I am not experience with Eland but I would have to issue with someone hunting Moose with Heavy premium bullets from...

    6.5x55 sweed

Good round for everything up to moose. Think with my uncle of taking my little cousin hunting and thinking of a excuse to buy a lovey Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 over a new 6.5 cred rifle and good shoting with a scope (we have a .30-30 .30-06 .270 and 2 .303(both No.5 so ouch ) between us)

Instagram "influencer" facing 19 charges hunting in The Yukon

Residents are allowed 2 Black Bears a year and 1 Gizz every 3 years. The issue if he lied about being a resident and also export without a permit. Note that residency requires 12 month before getting a licence . It could be an honest mistake for sure but you have to sign a lot of paper working...

Instagram "influencer" facing 19 charges hunting in The Yukon

Seems Mr. Adventure lied to get a resident hunting licence and then killed 3 bears in a week https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/hamm-instagram-influencer-wildlife-charges-yukon-bears-1.7035889 from a brief look on google it appears that Mr. Hamm is based in LA which means he would require...

Curious why cape buffalo have the same minimum caliber requirement as Rhino, Hippo and Elephant?

This Texas Ranch Recommends 30-05 300 or 7mm for CAPE BUFFALO which are all marginal for Bison but lol at the cost you can have a full backcountry African hunt(with a bunch of Plains game and maybe even another Big 5) and taxidermy with money left over for a nice new DG rifle...

Canada bans import / export of elephant / rhino ivory (hunt trophies also)

The idea Not 14 Trophies not 14 Elephants 14 TUSKS which means 1) the Ivory of 7 Elephant a 2) perhaps not all from hunting The argument Kenya makes is that legal Ivory trade/import make it easier for illegal Ivory to be sold and creates a demand. This is a simple low risk way for Trudeau...

Is the 465 H&H as dead as your dinner?

I think the reason was that Holland and Holland wanted to have a .458 level cartridge with there name on it. .458 is fairly well covered with the Win Mag Lott and Rigby so they went with a odd ball proprietary. If one is paying Holland and Holland prices why not? Same with the 400 it's...

Is the 465 H&H as dead as your dinner?

The 460 Weatherby is notably banned not for size but because it can generate over 10k Joules the intent was to ban "sniper rifles" namely the 50 BMG

Curious why cape buffalo have the same minimum caliber requirement as Rhino, Hippo and Elephant?

In Yukon we have one of the only truly wild bison population the minimum is 30-06 with 180 but is not recommended(They recommend dangerous game bullets ). Most hunters start with the win mag and go up to the .416s. The .338 Win mag is popular and I think fine but depends on where you are...

    First Dangerous game capable rifle

Thanks Everyone. Sounds like a .375 H&H is likely the way to go. For me was a gun cabinet who's newest chambering is the .30-06 the Ruger just doesn't do it for me. As for looking at a .338 Win mag then a big bore like a .458 Lott or a .470 NE for Africa I kinda like that but I don't see much...

    First Dangerous game capable rifle

I am currently looking to get a bigger gun for wild wood bison and Grizzly Bear(These are personal hunt without a PH/guide to backup) and perhaps for use on Moose and of course to one day take on a Cape Buffalo hunt .
