Happy loading, hopefully everything works out for you. I’m super hopeful the smokeless powder works out, a much cleaner option. I think I read that the original loads had 270 grain bullets and maybe a 500 grain option but I’m not sure on the 500 load maybe that was one of the nitro loads. The...
I haven’t had the time to any loading for it. I was able to find 6 original Eley loaded cartridges for it. Only 1 of the 6 actually fired but I was happy to hear the rifle shoot. I’m glad to hear that someone else has the same rifle. I’ll let you know if I figure out a good load for it and...
My question is how big can I go using this action? Also due to the fact that this rifle is in its original state is it another rifle that should stay that way like the M1917? As always thank you guys in advance for sharing your knowledge.
If I don’t go with the enfield action what others would you guys recommend? Also are there any good left handed options? I’m a lefty but have always made do with right handed guns. But if I’m making a custom rifle why not have it the best way possible for me.
This project is still in the planning stages so nothing is set in stone for it yet. Also I unfortunately don't have a hunt planned for the rifle yet so I am in no big hurry to get the rifle built. Having a love for the big bore rifles and not being recoil sensitive I know I want to build a rifle...
Still haven't had a chance to take any pictures. Thank you guys for your input. You answered my question on whether or not to use it as a starting point for a big bore project. The rifle isn't sporterized. The one thing I did notice is that the engraving in front of the ejection port was ground...
I found in my grandpa’s rifle collection what I believe is an M1917 Enfield Rifle. As best I can tell it is in its original military configuration. I’ll get pictures in the next day or two. My grandpa has passed away and we are figuring out what to do with his collection. What I am thinking...
I have searched all over for ammunition for my double rifle that is chambered in .500/.450 no1 express, and finally i was able to get in contact with Bertram here in the USA. They manufacture brass for that caliber but the smallest box of brass I can buy is 100 rounds. Its brand new brass which...
To start with I have a J W Tolley double rifle chambered in .500/.450 no 1 Express. Not a cartridge you can buy at your local gun shop or any where for that matter. I was lucky enough to find and purchase 6 loaded cartridges for it on gunbroker. They were Eley brand cartridges. The bullets in...
I am curious to know if anyone on here might have any idea where to get ammo or empty brass for a 500/450 no 1. I inherited a J W Tolley double rifle in that caliber. If no one knows where I can find ammo or brass what parent case should i reform to make the cartridge? Thank you all in advance...
I read a post from 2 years ago but on it you had a listing for a 500/450 no1 reloading dies. By any chance are those still available? If they are I am very interested in them. My email is [redacted] Thanks in advance for your response.
Ok so correction I figured no 1 and that’s exactly what it is, is a 500/450 no 1 express. Now all I have to do is find ammunition and I’m all set. Thanks for all the help guys.
Still not sure wether it’s a no 1 or 2. I believe a no 2 but I didn’t actually talk to the gunsmith myself. My dad was the one he called so Tuesday when I go up to pick up the gun I’ll find out for sure.

The gun in this link looks very similar to the gun I have, only cleaner. What...
Update on the rifle. I have taken it to a local gunsmith my grandfather and Dad trusts with their German drillings. He is currently waiting on the Cerro safe that he ordered to do the chamber cast for me. I attempted to do a casting with hot glue as was suggested but couldn't get a good casting...
I know I have to do the chamber cast but I haven’t had the time with work and everything else, so until I can I’m just guessing and checking things out. Thanks for the input guys. It very much appreciated
I have a 450 NE No 2 cartridge and set it in the chamber upside down. It sticks out of the barrel way too far to ever chamber but the rim fits in nicely. Any thoughts other than a chamber cast on my next days off?
On the left side of the action behind the bolt there is a "lever" I'm sure that's probably not the right name for it but i don't know what else to call it. I have looked at several other Mauser M98 rifles and they have the part as well. Can anyone please tell me what it's for? The part is...
Had to work a double last night guys and then be back to work today for my regular shift so i only had a chance to take one quick picture of the stock of the gun. I'll try to take more and better pictures tonight after I get home.
I put the 450 NE cartridge in to the chamber backwards as suggested to see how the rim fits. It seems to be a little loose around the rim. I don’t know if that’s supposed to be that way for ejection purposes or maybe it’s not the right cartridge. It’s an old kynoch cartridge by the way. What are...
I'm not interested in selling the rifle. I was just curious to know how much it might be worth. Thank you for the information. I'll have to give that scrubbing technique a try when I get time.
