Hi, @franzfmdavis
In an ideal world where I could pursue an unlimited number of African lions (my personal favorite of the African Big Five), I would totally love to own two .375 Holland & Holland Rimless Magnums:
1) A Magnum Mauser Oberndorf Model 98
2) A Westley Richards droplock ejector...
For Cape buffalo, a .375 Holland & Holland Magnum (wide V backsights and uncovered ivory bead foresight) loaded with 300Gr premium grade expanding bullets has always suited me best. Based upon current market choices, I am (at the moment) using the 300Gr Barnes TSX. If availability was not an...
I’ve successfully made one shot kills on Nilgai till now with:
7x57mm Mauser
.30-06 Springfield
.300 Winchester Magnum
.338 Winchester Magnum
The .300 Winchester Magnum loaded with 200Gr Nosler Partitions really hits the sweet spot for these gigantic antelope. With calibers smaller than...
No unbonded bullets should ever be employed against African Cape buffalo. Barring a broadside lung shot aimed in such a manner that your bullet completely manages to avoid all heavy bone.
I was 11 years old when I first watched “Hatari” starring John Wayne with my parents in the cinema hall of Dacca Club in 1963. And it immediately implanted an immense admiration in me for the actor. That film (along with Stewart Granger’s “King Solomon’s Mines” and “The Last Safari”) made me...
@HankBuck
I feel so embarrassed to be compared to the likes of the great Jim Corbett (my childhood hero). But thank you so much. It wouldn’t have been even remotely possible without the exceptional logistical support of the Sundarbans Department of Forests. My men made a buffoon like me succeed...
My first man eating Royal Bengal tiger. The hide was gifted by the President to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her state visit in 1983. She wasn’t just another VIP that I met & accommodated during my career. She was a very likable, laid back & approachable person face to face.
Federal lists 300Gr Swift A Frame factory loads as currently available.

Between the two bullets that you list, I’m a Barnes TSX man all the way.
The only African game animal which I would not employ it against, are...
Hi Mr. @Mark Henderson
I absolutely love your content. It’s really annoying, but understandably inevitable that your hunting exploits would draw the attention of these keyboard commandoes.
Harassment towards our kind is unfortunately nothing new. When President Theodore Roosevelt was leaving...
I echo all of the other’s sentiments. 300Gr Hornady Interlock is perfectly acceptable for any North American game including the great Kodiak bears. For Cape buffalo, it will also work on a perfect broadside shot (provided that the heavy humerus bone itself is avoided). But the Hornady Dangerous...
My daughter (right) was 14 years old when I first took her waterfowl hunting. With the correct stance and grip, she learnt how to fire a 12 gauge 3” Magnum side by side shotgun without any problems (my Beretta Model 626E and my father’s Midland Gun Co. Wild Fowler Model). As you can see, she...
If you look at the earliest John Rigby & Co. catalogs, then you will observe that the .275 Rigby rifles of that era were all designed for use with 173Gr bullets by default. This is because (back in those days) a .275 Rigby was originally identical to a 7x57mm Mauser in everything but name. These...
I highly recommend a Ruger Hawkeye Hunter chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum. It will be perfectly adequate for all of your plains game hunting purposes.
My advice is to always buy whatever you find, because you never know when you will get it next. Or when it will suddenly be discontinued. Or when the quality of the ammunition will suddenly deteriorate.
For example, I have always been very partial to Sellier & Bellot 175Gr Nosler Partition...
.375 Holland & Holland Magnum with 300Gr bullets and the rifle being zeroed in for your maximum point blank range. Can be comfortably utilized for everything except body shots on bull elephant (I state this from firsthand experience).
My beloved 1987 made Beretta Model 626E in 12 gauge 3” Magnum.
Left barrel is fully choked. Right barrel is half choked.
Single selective trigger. I’m never letting this one go.
Forest Ranger (1972-1975)
Divisional Forest Officer (1976-1989)
Director of National Botanical Gardens (1990-1992)
Chief Conservator of Forests (1993-2000)
Member of Parliament (2000-2005)
Director of Ever Green Bengal (2006-Current)
Lecturer at Chittagong Forest Institute (2006-Current)...
7x57mm Mauser with 170-175Gr bullets (currently I’m using Prvi Partizan 173Gr soft points)
Also .30-06 Springfield (always with 220Gr Remigton Core Lokts)
If I were to buy a new rifle for all of my plains game hunting purposes, then I would hands down opt for a Ruger Model 77 Hawkeye Hunter...
400Gr Barnes TSX
Nosler Cases
Federal 215 Primer
107.0Gr H1000 powder
Velocity= 2320 FPS
400Gr Hornady DGX Bonded bullets are excellent water buffalo medicine, and I’d be more than happy to provide you with load data using these bullets if you like.
The reason Barnes TSX & other monolithic...
I see a fine hippopotamus bull on land, in your near future.
Fantastic purchase, @Rare Breed . What loads will you be running through yours ? I highly recommend the Wim Degol 480Gr Vor Mantel & Star Mantel at an honest 2150 FPS.
320Gr bullets should be driven at a minimum velocity of 2400 FPS in order to be a serious contender for dangerous game hunting, in my humble experience.
You’re 100% spot on.
By comparison, the action on this Midland Gun Co. 12-65/.500 Black Powder Express boxlock extractor combination gun… is their screw grip action.
Absolutely fantastic write up as always. Pakistani Governor Gohar Ayub Kgan hunted two Royal Bengal tigers in the Sundarban mangrove forests in 1958 & 1962 with a 1938 made “B” grade John Rigby & Co. boxlock ejector chambered in .470 Nitro Express (built on a Webley & Scott PHV-1 action). I...
Most American makes of ammunition on the current market are quite excellent, @skydiver386
The Barnes TSX, Winchester Power Points, Remington Core Lokts, Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claws (when available), Swift A Frames (when available) & Nosler Partitions (when available) leave very little to...
Ammunition availability is a bigger concern for me, than ammunition price (although it obviously isn’t very practical to buy something like a .700 Nitro Express which costs $125 per round). My two centerfire rifles are chambered in:
.375 Holland & Holland Magnum
7x57mm Mauser
I picked these...

Safari Dave, were you using the Winchester Silver Tips with the copper-nickel-zinc jacket or the Winchester Silver Tips with the aluminum jacket ?
Even if I do not like Winchester Silver Tips, I strongly believe that a man must be absolutely fair when criticizing anything. I will fully submit...
I am not a fan of Winchester Silver Tips, at all. On my life’s first African safari to Kenya in 1974, I lost a very big African male lion (which we had baited by employing a zebra stallion) when I made a frontal chest shot with a 300Gr Winchester Silver Tip factory load fired from a .375 Holland...
Hi, Ontario Hunter. Always love your feedback.
But I do believe that Browning fitted at least a few Belgium made A5 semi automatic shotguns with polychokes from the factory from 1952 until cessation of production of A5 shotguns in Belgium in 1975.
I have a rare Fabrique Nationale flyer from...
All excellent firearms.
I’m a real big fan on the old Belgian made Browning Safari rifles which were built on the Fabrique Nationale Mauser Series 400 actions until 1962.
The currently manufactured Japanese manufactured Browning firearms also leave very little to be desired.
Until recently...
Mr. Diesel,
The phenomenon with Winchester .458 Magnum ammunition boxes containing some rounds loaded with ball powder and some rounds loaded with extruded powder... continued into the 1980s. Majority of those rounds did succeed in downing elephant & other big game. But that does not change the...
