Pre War Mauser in Schuler Caliber 11.2x72

Those would be great for load development and practice. For Africa though I would probably stick with Woodleigh Weldcores and CEB or Degol solids. I think the Hawk bullets have a softer jacket and are definitely no bonded.

    Mannlicher Schoenauer

Hawk also has 200gr bullets that might be more fun to shoot. I have not ordered anything from them in a few years but the prices are OK and no complaints on service.

    Mannlicher Schoenauer

MS 9x56 is correct and Hawk Bullets has them in several diameters to fit. You will hear some folks speak poorly of Hawk but in my experience they work well at 9x56 velocities.

    Small ring mauser

The later actions were made in Mexico and are actually pretty good also. I believe that if you have them re-heat treated they are likely safe for most modern 60,000psi cartridges. I am nearly finished with the one in the photos. The stock is off being checkered. It is a 1930s vintage with the...

    Trophy/reloading/man cave build

For a reloading room/workshop you need all the light you can get and showing off the trophies is secondary. Just sayin. At least that is how I built mine over 20 years ago. And make it twice as big as you think you need. Mine is full and overflowing to my barn.

Pre War Mauser in Schuler Caliber 11.2x72

Here is a photo of the 400gr solid seated deep enough for the Mauser standard magazine along with the solid bullet and a Woodleigh 401gr Weldcore. Because of the length of the solid it seats pretty deep in the case but still leaves plenty of room for my RL15 load at just under 2,300fps as tested...

Pre War Mauser in Schuler Caliber 11.2x72

I have discovered a solution to the need for solids for the 11.2x72 in the US. Cutting Edge makes a .440 Safari Solid that is 450grains. I made a fixture for my lathe and have cut them down to 400gr. which is correct for the cartridge. I haven't shot any yet but I'm fairly certain that they will...

'Shooting the British Double Rifle' new 4th edition

I'm not sure but it seems that you are saying that RL15 loads recoil less than with H4831. Is this with equal velocities that you have measured with a cronograph?

    450/400 3"

I have killed 4 buffalo. I love the 40s so have used the 450-400 3" in a Ruger #1, a mauser bolt action in 404 jeffery, and last year with a double rifle in 450-400 3-1/4" nitro. Both of the 450-400 Buffalo were 1 shot kills as was the first one with a 375 Ackley. The one with the 404 ended with...

I received the same email from Jumbo Moore. Damn shame, it was a beautiful camp on the Lugenda river in a great game area. As stated by someone earlier I have often thought about going back there some day. As in a lot of other regions in Africa, and most of the rest of the world there are...

You are absolutely correct and sorry for my mistake. It is 9.3x57 that is available from Norma. I shoot my 9x57 with 8mm brass run in the sizer die to neck it up and it works great. For my 9x56 Mannlicher I bought some Hornaber brass years ago with the correct headstamp. Unfortunately they...

Identifying this Mauser and the cartridge it takes

I'm wondering if you ever got a chance to slug the bore. Your info so far seems to indicate that you likely have an original 8mm that may have been re-bored to 9mm but would be good to know the true bore diameter.

A thorough conversation with Swarovski - Conclusion: Rookhawk knows nothing and is wrong about everything

Thanks for the math lesson and I completely agree. I hunt Whitetails on a wooded lease with some friends and there is not a scope in the group over 8 power. Once we sight them in we hunt with them on 1.5 or 2X or whatever the minimum power setting is. Long shots can be a little over 100 yds and...

A thorough conversation with Swarovski - Conclusion: Rookhawk knows nothing and is wrong about everything

Much of this discussion has diverted away from the manufacturers toward magnification and other scope characteristics. In that vein any users here and in general today are favoring large light gathering objective lenses which can be a good thing and OK for Africa, which is the point of this...

A thorough conversation with Swarovski - Conclusion: Rookhawk knows nothing and is wrong about everything

Almost every big game animal I have successfully hunted has been with a Leupold scope. I started that way about 50 plus years ago and never found a reason to change. I do however have a beat up pair of Swarovski binos that have been around the world in the last 20 years plus and are still awesome.

A thorough conversation with Swarovski - Conclusion: Rookhawk knows nothing and is wrong about everything

First of all I don't think we (the majority of us anyway) should shoot at game much past 400 yards and rarely at that. But we do have rifles that are capable, and I have pulled it off. I think WAB was amazed that anyone would bother dialing a turret at that range which I also agree with. So I...

A thorough conversation with Swarovski - Conclusion: Rookhawk knows nothing and is wrong about everything

This is most likely true. Everything now is about a scope as big as the rifle it is mounted on. The market (shooters today in the US) is all about long range and high tech along with those extra 30mils of elevation adjustment that of course you never need while hunting. In Europe they want big...

    IMR 4350 or H 4350 for a swift A frame out of a 375 H&H

They are very much alike so you will probably get similar results. The H4350 is supposed to have a slightly slower burn rate so maybe a bit more powder but you don't know until you try. I do use way more Hodgden powders over IMR including H4350. Recently it also depends on what you can get. Lots...

A Beauty there sir... It looks like we closely agree on a 404 Jeff formula. I did waive the rear sight believing they are a backup proposition. Disappointed In My New 404 Jeffery

I have Kynoch/CIC load info from about 25 years ago that shows the 400 gr bullet at 2,125 fps. With that load the 404 is a pussycat. Having built my own rifle shown below and working up loads for it there is a noticeable difference in recoil between 2,000 and 2,200 fps loads. It is all physics...
