First Dangerous Game Rifle - Struggling to decide

Frankly, I would only be looking at a Winchester 70 unless you want something bigger than 458 Lott/470 Capstick or are going full custom rifle. IMO, the reason for this is that the Winchester 70 has a great stock for most and needs only lop set generally because of this. It also has crf, fixed...

    Learning to Shoot Big Bore

Do you reload? If so, 458 Lott has a lot of power levels from 350gr lighter loads through 400 gr all the way to 500gr solids at 2200fps. You can just work your way up the recoil tree.

    NECG Peep and Partridge

I have both on 2 different rifles. If I was shooting over 100 yards, I like the peep and smaller bead. I have that setup as a back up irons on a travel deer/elk gun. On my 458 Lott, I went with 2 leaf express rear and big white bead front. I prefer this to an optic, but that is just me and my...

Big changes coming at American Hunting Rifles

Both are good rifles, but I’m glad to see AHR focus on the Model 70. It is really much more refined of an action and stock pattern.

Wanted Ruger M77 In .458 Lott

Have you considered rechambering a Winchester 70? I think you will be money ahead and happier with the rifle IME. When I had mine done, Ruger’s were $2000 ish in good condition. Win 70 458 Win Mag - $1200 -Rechamber - mag work, maybe bolt stop adjust, check feeding.... -shorten to 22” and...

    Rifle slings

New style military 2pt that fits diagonally across the front of me. Needs a slider to pull tight for shooting position. LRI FTW sling looks good, but I run stuff made before that and see no need to replace.

What is the predominant optics on the dark continent?

Heck, I’d just like to put some money on whether Jim Shockey hits an animal at 900yds from a field position. people do, but they are the anal types with a fair amount of equipment, practice and a set method to dial, shoot, back to zero stop or dial corrections. They aren’t just throwing bullets...

    CZ 550 Lott feeding issue?

    1) Based on looking at rifle/pistol feeding of crf guns in the past, I’m thinking this is the cartridge getting loose as the bolt comes back. Likely this is a follower spring issue. The 458 Lott is hard on these parts. It just weighs a lot so it needs more spring force. The feed rails could be...

    American Hunting Rifles

Very nice rifle! You must be thrilled. Wayne should publish that he does M70 work. When I got my last rifle, I talked to him like 3 times...always about CZ’s. I probably would have sent him my M70 to work on. In the end, Dennis Olson built my M70 and it came out well enough I want him to re...

*Scope Added To Package!* Beautiful Custom AHR Ruger RSM .458 Lott For Sale

That usually costs only about $100. Might be less fitting the pad only. A 3/4” Kickeeze would look sharp and get you to 13 5/8”, if I did the math right. That is pretty short. Remember you want a big bore about 0.25” longer than lower recoil rifle.

Warne, Talley, or Leupold QD rings ?

If we are talking Weavers, this thread has slipped. Warne’s are my go to quality steel base & ring. Sure, with a 2 lb or larger scope, my go to is TPS. Now we are going to talk Weaver....ok. Weaver’s suck IME. They do not make the ring material strong enough to hold the joint torque. There is...

Best beginner brand/reloading kit for big rifle cartridges?

The Hornady Classic kit is quite functional. You can load it all with a beam scale and trickling method. ....but the Hornady Dispenser pays for itself quickly! Honestly, you won’t be happy. I don’t have experience struggling with lee presses, but I have struggled with their other stuff. You...

458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott

I tried to read it all and I will comment where I should. I studied 458 WM and Lott. I decided to go Lott because I’m a reloader and components are same price, but I can get more out of the Lott. I’m not afraid of load testing near max either. First a comment about Hornady data. That is not...

    Big bore load development process

Well, got the micrometer out. I’m getting 0.005” case head expansion at 2340.....that is a no go for me. Probably scrap that brass. I’m backing off to 2291fps and 0.0031” case head expansion....still seems high to me. I might even go down a couple from there.....btw, this is all with minimal...

    Big bore load development process

Well, I’m at 84.4 gr of H-4895...2340 fps(22”)...and little to no bolt lift feeling. I would NOT call this load safe. It is above all data I can find for 458 Lott. I really can’t put anymore powder in the case. This load pushes the bullet back out pretty hard. I measured cases with a...

    Big bore load development process

Will a big bore straight wall ever show bolt lift? I have a model 70.....with the safety on, bolt lift is near zero. With a new, sized case, it has zero bolt lift. With 79gr of h4895 and 500gr bullets, it still has no bolt lift.....

New To Reloading Need Beginner Help

To get started, you will need a caliper. I use the Hornady digital and have been happy. It is primarily for measuring case length and overall length at this point. You will want a different scale or a check weight set. No way I’m trusting the Lee scale at face value. I’m not really knocking...

  44. nksmfamjp

    Big bore load development process

I thought so too, but let’s think about that for a minute. With a crf action, you want some extractor tension, right? That will always push the round to one side. With a belted magnum, you always have the edge in the chamber from the belt. You can loosen up the extractor until it doesn’t hold...

    Rechambering of Rifle Actions?

I just had this rechambering done. 4 things need considered. Rechambering simply like 30’06 to 30’06 AI can be pretty cheap and give you a pretty good improvement. 30’06 to 300 WM adds changing the bolt face and possibly magazine or feedwork. 30’06 to 300 RUM probably cannot be done due to...
